Very interesting perspective. I've told my friend to talk to me in Portuguese and ruthlessly point out my mistakes and I repeat the sentence with the correction. That's the only way I'll learn.

This situation happened to me in Berlin. I wanted to brush up on my Speaking skills in German, however people replied to me in English due to my strong Portuguese accent. The best weapon is to speak the language. Once they realise you can speak the language, they will reply to you in European Portuguese. If they speak to you in English and you reply in English, don’t complain. You as a foreigner who wish to master my native language in my home country, have to take the initiative. Be brave and speak portuguese. This will work if you insist. On the flip side, many foreigners don’t want to learn the language. Speaking a couple of minutes at school, and in the street, you only speak your native language won’t help you to reach the next level. When I went to England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, I didn’t speak the language well. I also was afraid if that person will be able to understand my pronunciation. I was alone in a country where everyone only spoke English. I had the same problem in Germany. I didn’t speak German. Many German people argued with me by speaking English” Sorry, I don’t get your point, I don’t understand, let’s switch to English. I still spoke German, although my German left a lot to be desired at that point in my life. Last but not least, many foreigners don’t speak English. We take for granted that every foreigner/ tourist speaks English. Learn the language and practise it as much as you can. You have to be motivated. Take the bull by the horns.

Nenhum garçom me respondeu em inglês.

I don't know if portuguese people on the street in Portugal help foreigner student's but what I noticed is that there are huge number of Portuguese teacher for foreigners. More than my country, Italy. Not in total number (we are 60mln) but in percentage I see a higher number of Portuguese teacher than Italian. It seems portuguese love and work a lot as teacher for portuguese as foreign language. That's my experience :)

This is good advice. Whenever I'm in a restaurant I always say that I want to practice my portuguese and they are ALWAYS obliging. I also ask for the menu in portuguese to practice my reading. The portuguese people are always accomodating.
