Good to see John Allen reporting on the Catholic Church. Last time I saw his name, it was as a regular contributor to NCR. Thanks for the in-depth coverage.
They make their robes long and their phylacteries broad… they impose rules, heavy to bear, but never lift a finger to help. The Will of God will prevail despite our shortcomings.
John: thanks for another insightful post. Found you a few months ago and look forward to Tuesday and your posts. Question: there was reporting in the US this week about the Pope meeting with a group of Jesuits and being questioned about opposition to him/his policies from conservative Catholics in the US. It was reported that he called such opposition “backward.” Maybe you semi addressed it with your discussion on schism, but I’d be interested in your take. Thanks again and best. David.
1400 Catholics and pope goes there but not in 10 years to the Catholic state of Argentina where he was born, grew up in, was a jesuit priest, bishop and cardinal. baffling and odd. One extreme periphery with one cardinal. Australia has no cardinal yet millions of Catholics. But what must Argentines believe when the pope has never been back since election?
Always a likeable guy, ever taking a restrained and let's-not-get-too-alarmed-here approach, you usually succeed in providing perspectives that reassure. But John, even you need to perceive the significance and magnitude of the divisive issues at play in this upcoming synod. Some issues are perhaps surmountable, governable; however others will lead, missing Solomon's point altogether, to just plain ripping the baby in half. You underestimate the determination of some to reform the Church into the grave.
I am member of Ernakulam Angamaly archeparchy. Dark days in Syro Malabar church of India. Hatred at its maximum. Eucharist is being weponised by trying to celebrate under huge police force protection. Bishops are not hearing the cries of priests & laity of our archdiocese. Your reporting is correct to actual situation here😢
As for the Syro Malabar Church, its synod of bishops decided to implement the uniform mode of Eucharistic celebration with absolute disregard for today’s people/ faithful, with no respect for their own legislation (2000 Yr) on the procedure of implementing uniformity, when they had declared that the diocesan liturgical councils would be consulted before introducing the practice again. Their first attempt at uniformity had failed miserably in 1999 when almost half the number of dioceses had to give dispensation . That was the reason they said they would wait for opportune moment! The Synod however thought Covid time was the best! They knew if they asked for the opinion of the faithful there would be strong resistance. Hence to do it stealthily, the Synod circumvented the whole procedure by cunningly getting hold of a letter of exhortation from the Pope (which should have been the last step after the decision by the Synod) ! And this particular letter was publicised as if it were the Motu Proprio from the Pope, effectively scuttling all discussions both in the following Synod as well as among the priests and faithful! Such errors in procedure make a mockery of a participatory Church as visualised in Lumen Gentium! Utter disdain for priests’ voices
Yeah. Its all over the place not only Italy right now. You'll find young people at the shopping mall, on the beach, on the city park, running, doing sport, going to soccer stadiums, going to parties, what else on a Sunday... And those diminishing 70+ yo individuals, mostly ladies in the Church...
@@nunagoras You sound exuberant about the obvious ruining of The Church. Given your frequent leftist comments on this channel, that makes sense. And of course under Pope Francis, it's not just the pews, but the seminaries and other religious vocations.
When you look at all the other Synods that have taken place you have to ask yourself how succesful they were and how much did they change within the church. You will find that most were not sucessful and changed very little or nothing at all within the church. How many thimes over the past 2023 years have people said it is the end of the Church and we were heading into schisim. the truth was quite differentthe end of the Church did not happen and this synod will not be the end either. Prayer is key in all of this prayer that God will lead his church to were it should go not where some people waht it to go.We need to ask ourselves what are we changing to? are we moving away from a Church that stands for something or will we end up as a Church that stands for anything that goes and runs with it and I do not think that is where we will end up. However We need an honest and open dialogue with all the interested groups and people so that we will come to what god wants for his Church. before anything else we need to commit everything we do and say to prayer so that the Holy Spirit will inspire us to greater understanding of oneanother and all the points of view raised even the most cotroversial ones. I enjoy your analysis and commentary. That said, so are you saying the Italian Catholic Culture is like the American Catholic - characteristically one of convenience and tepid aka lukewarm.
The fruits of modernism are being harvested, declining Church attendance, no big deal. As far as I am aware of, missing Sunday Mass is still a mortal sin in which congregants should refrain from communion until attending the sacrament of reconciliation. For once I would love to see a point by point refutation of the points that are brought up by Bishops such as Bishop Strickland by modernists who trivialize what they have to say. But Pope splaining will certainly open doors in the Vatican, I pray that your wife has a safe trip to Mongolia and look forward to the coverage of the trip.
So: First of its all: Congrats to the wonderful report! 1. Mongolia: This is Pope Francis at his best! From his first day he has been the same, and perhaps the unique big leader remaining on this so confusing world in transition! 2. Our Church is at one of its crucial points these days. I believe this is the most important point in history after the Council of Trent, on where we really live, despite Vat I and Vat II which reforms were merely "cosmetic" compared to the whole baggage. And; whatever else Pope Francis decides to do, the rad trad movement will declare schism one or the other way. Lack of trust from them is simply too much these days on the global Church for them to pass out. Germany can also go in schism if Pope Francis decides to go too far from what they're asking, even though, the possibility of an ecumenical agreement on the minimum with the Lutherans might to soften the tensions there. Interesting times away, but I believe whatever those schisms may be, globally very few will to leave the "boat". 3. BRICS: Surely Pope Francis came from that constituency, but now, most of those countries do have a difficult time with the Vatican. Nothing will change there. And frankly, Pope Francis will stay there likely for the next 5 years or so. 5 years in diplomatic or business time is like a day on everyone's life, that is say, near to nothing. 4. Siro-Malabar: Margins of the margins. They'll to deal with it properly. 5. Italian secularism: You know. It's everywhere. Here where I live on the rural Portugal near Holly Mother of Fátima Shrine, pretty much only the 70+yo do go regularly to Mass. All the others just go irregularly, maybe on special occasion. Surely; we had a huge crowd for WYD here in Lisbon... You know... Easy to join 1.5+ million global youth here for a week... Difficult to join 10 of them per regular Parish out there! At least on the west, our current alive generations from Millenials onward will likely to be the last huge faith oriented ones alive, even if we fail going weekly to Mass. Gen Z will be the first absolutely secular generation alive, even though those 10% of them whom still go are becoming based.
Very good summary of mainstream media's take on these issues with the exception of Syro-Malabar. But yours would be the view if they had heard of it. Do you have a non-spoon-fed, non-globalist view on anything at all, nunagoras?

Another masterpiece by JA - a bit like the one on the ceiling of the Banqueting House on Whitehall, by Rubens, The Apotheosis of James the First into Heaven. Words like Apotheosis dear John, don't seem that noteworthy when heard during the course of an erudite discussion on a Catholic news channel, just as they are unremarkable in the context of their use in the naming of flamboyant, swirling Baroque works of art commissioned by aesthetic British kings with a taste for luxury and drama! On the other hand, while Apotheosis contains an extra syllable, diaphanous matches its letter count and I would argue its appearance in a casual text I once wrote to a friend whose lunch party I was slightly late for, via text message, deservedly provoked more of a reaction especially as the other guests were a rabble of drunken queens.....
to Bernadette Kavanagh, the synod as a family member helper of the family as a procreation gift role had until Pope Francis' inaugural homily as newly elected Pope on 19 March 2013 not been required by synodality as family member role and identity in need of union to respect what it considers to be its rights. These rights of this role stated at Pope St John Paul 2's Apostolic Exhortation, "On the vocation and the mission of the lay faithful in the Church and in the World", Christifideles Laici, 1988, 40 are: 1. "to make the family aware of its identity ... and role ...", 2. "In such a way, the family can and must require from all the respect for those rights which in saving the family, will save society itself." The identity and role of the family are inseparable and qualitatively equal. Respect for "those rights" by "all" is for "all" to keep or allow in uncertainty of belief this inseparability and qualitative equality; that is, covenant, non-presumed reciprocity, of the identity and role of the family. Pope Francis in his family member role identity "put into action an educational project" (Pope St John Paul 2's Council for the Family "Guidelines for Education Within the Family" on: "The Truth and Meaning of Human Sexuality" [TTMHS, PCF], 1995, 24) as to these "rights" from his election in March 2013 and explicitly on or just after 10 June 2021 by his example in his simultaneous accountability and amends for his failures in "respect for those rights" prior to his election in March 2013 in correcting these failures admitted by him in the cases of: (a) alleged embezzlement of his procreation role gift charity donations by ten of his Vatican state citizens/employees, including Cardinal Angelo Becciu, (b) an unacceptable risk of fraud on his identity as a consecrated celibate married by vows to man in Christ by the Italian Parliament "Zan" anti-homophobia bill. Pope Francis' correcting of these admitted failures by him was by his exercise of an absolute power of his simultaneous authorisations in his role identity on or just after 10 June 2021 of his applications in his role of: 1. criminal inditements in his Vatican state court for this alleged embezzlement presently nearing completion of been heard, 2. a protest note from his Vatican state Secretariat of State against this Italian Parliament "Zan" anti-homophobia bill then defeated in early November 2021. Pope Francis as also in a role as a helper of his family was partly educated as to how to sustain what he considered to be his rights by the conclusion of the testing of the multiplier in economics by Colin Clark from 1931 that Colin Clark in his own incomplete accountability and amends simultaneously advised in 1964 the UNO Food and Agriculture Organisation and the Vatican Council 2 Pope St Paul V1’s “Commission on Population” of his conclusion of “just about paripassu rate of growth of population and food supplies in the developing countries.” This part education of Pope Francis was completed by the consents to be joined in consecrated marriages, male female vowed to God on 25 February 1991 completed on the death of his wife on 1 November 2017 then celibate vowed to man in Christ from 1 November 2017 completed on 31 March 2021, by a son of Colin Clark on this reference point of Mary of her consecrated marriages as reversed as firstly celibate (RSV Luke 1:38: “let it be to me”) then male female (RSC Matthew 1:24: “Joseph … took his wife”. The Church role directions of this son of Colin Clark in his role were dated 28 September 1994 from Pope St John Paul 2’s Council for the Laity Vice President, Bishop Paul Cordes, in his letter to the Kenmore Catholic Community parish served by this catechist son of Colin Clark of the Archdiocese of Brisbane, Australia addressing this son of Colin Clark in the role part of his catechist role identity asking that the contents of this letter be communicated by this parish to him and which were inter alia: “At this point, you must take the steps that you consider most appropriate and necessary, at the local level, according to your conscience to sustain what you consider to be your rights.” These “rights” as the preceding letters in this matter to this catechist son of Colin Clark from Bishop Paul Cordes, dated 13 November 1993, 18 March 1994 and 24 June 1994, made clear were of this anglo-catholic accredited catechist of roman catholic religion son of Colin Clark in his duty to “prudently consider advising his non-roman catholic students not to attend the Mass [in the roman catholic Brigidene order owned and run school that he served both in his role identity as a catechist and in his role as a teacher] if inadequately instructed [on the discipline on reception of Holy Communion by non- roman catholic Christians (canon law 844.4)] or if in danger of receiving eucharist out of peer pressure.” (Guidelines of the roman catholic Archdiocese of Brisbane, 1991, revised 1990). The issue for Pope Francis from his election in March 2013 was dealt with by him by his own accountability and amends as explicit on or just after 10 June 2021 in the cases of Cardinal Angelo Becciu and nine other of his Vatican state citizens/employees and the Italian state Parliament "Zan" anti-homophobia bill. This issue was of lack of respect for the relationship in Pope Francis' present moment in Real Presence between eucharist as a procreation gift role as source of unity and marriage as role procreation gift role and identity in need of union having kept/allowed their inseparability and qualitative equality as summit of unity inadequately as incompletely stated in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1994 at n. 1324 and Lumen Gentium, 1964, 11.

Well: Let us to be clear here. Most clerics I know do try to reach the people where they are. Most of them all. When they go on hospitals, prisons, schools, or the public square to give their pastoral work... Too much is being done without people watching carefully... Problem is: You can't force people in anymore on this democratic world of today. And the more conservatively rigid a cleric may be, the less people would flock in. I don't want forced conversions. I don't want my Church to become another Jehovah's Witnesses sort of cult. Problems enough here on the rural areas where I live with that sect altogether. I wholly respect everyone's right to have a faith, but I can't tolerate proselytism. As simple as that. And the same way I don't want JW to proselytize on me, I don't want to proselytize on them. I hope people to be more aware of the realities. JW remains a serious concern, but those rad trads just want to follow their own methods? Good luck. I'm out.

Sorry but I disagree that Not going to Mass 1x a week is okay.......Mary is wonderful, but I really think she is utterly saddened that the reenactment of her Son's ultimate sacrifice (ie The Mass)...is taken so blithley...It really is a major foundation of Catholic Church....Mary always points to her Son....not to herself...and says "Do whatever He tells you ".......One of the biggest signs of the Apocalypse ...Daniel 12: 11..."From the time the daily sacrifice is stopped and the sacreligious object that causes desecration is set up to be worshiped, there will be 1,290 days." That is how important it is! You cannot simply substitute Mary for Jesus and call yourself Catholic.

Pope Francis in his family member role identity "put into action an educational project" (Pope St John Paul 2's Council for the Family "Guidelines for Education Within the Family" on: "The Truth and Meaning of Human Sexuality" [TTMHS, PCF], 1995, 24) as to these "rights" from his election in March 2013 and explicitly on or just after 10 June 2021 by his example in his simultaneous accountability and amends for his failures in "respect for those rights" prior to his election in March 2013 in correcting these failures admitted by him in the cases of:
(a) alleged embezzlement of his procreation role gift charity donations by ten of his Vatican state citizens/employees, including Cardinal Angelo Becciu,
(b) an unacceptable risk of fraud on his identity as a consecrated celibate married by vows to man in Christ by the Italian Parliament "Zan" anti-homophobia bill.
Pope Francis' correcting of these admitted failures by him was by his exercise of an absolute power of his simultaneous authorisations in his role identity on or just after 10 June 2021 of his applications in his role of:
1. criminal inditements in his Vatican state court for this alleged embezzlement presently nearing completion of been heard,
2. a protest note from his Vatican state Secretariat of State against this Italian Parliament "Zan" anti-homophobia bill then defeated in early November 2021.
Pope Francis as also in a role as a helper of his family was partly educated as to how to sustain what he considered to be his rights by the conclusion of the testing of the multiplier in economics by Colin Clark from 1931 that Colin Clark in his own incomplete accountability and amends simultaneously advised in 1964 the UNO Food and Agriculture Organisation and the Vatican Council 2 Pope St Paul V1’s “Commission on Population” of his conclusion of “just about paripassu rate of growth of population and food supplies in the developing countries.”
This part education of Pope Francis was completed by the consents to be joined in consecrated marriages, male female vowed to God on 25 February 1991 completed on the death of his wife on 1 November 2017 then celibate vowed to man in Christ from 1 November 2017 completed on 31 March 2021, by a son of Colin Clark on this reference point of Mary of her consecrated marriages as reversed as firstly celibate (RSV Luke 1:38: “let it be to me”) then male female (RSC Matthew 1:24: “Joseph … took his wife”.
The Church role directions of this son of Colin Clark in his role were dated 28 September 1994 from Pope St John Paul 2’s Council for the Laity Vice President, Bishop Paul Cordes, in his letter to the Kenmore Catholic Community parish served by this catechist son of Colin Clark of the Archdiocese of Brisbane, Australia addressing this son of Colin Clark in the role part of his catechist role identity asking that the contents of this letter be communicated by this parish to him and which were inter alia:
“At this point, you must take the steps that you consider most appropriate and necessary, at the local level, according to your conscience to sustain what you consider to be your rights.”
These “rights” as the preceding letters in this matter to this catechist son of Colin Clark from Bishop Paul Cordes, dated 13 November 1993, 18 March 1994 and 24 June 1994, made clear were of this anglo-catholic accredited catechist of roman catholic religion son of Colin Clark in his duty to “prudently consider advising his non-roman catholic students not to attend the Mass [in the roman catholic Brigidene order owned and run school that he served both in his role identity as a catechist and in his role as a teacher] if inadequately instructed [on the discipline on reception of Holy Communion by non- roman catholic Christians (canon law 844.4)] or if in danger of receiving eucharist out of peer pressure.” (Guidelines of the roman catholic Archdiocese of Brisbane, 1991, revised 1990).
Do you have a reference to this warning ? One of the apparitions or....??
Are you claiming a "special revelation" of Our Lady? Because if so, that alone is anti-Catholic. If not, then do enlighten us just when and where did Our Lady "warn" that the Synod of October 2023 was "evil," Because I think you are just making things up to stoke fears among uneducated people.
The SM Synod Doesn't Know The Meaning Of Love, Mercy And Koinonia...They Know Only Rules And Regulations... If Jesus Was Here, He Would Have Taken Them As Examples Of Hypocrisy Instead Of Pharisees And High Priests 😢
most of the schismatic views expressed today come from your part of the Church, John Allen. the Church in the USA seems polarized and utterly deranged.
I think you'll find it's Germany Anthony.
Have you ever had a sensible (or even just a non-globalist lefty) take on anything at all?
@@Jimboken1 i get that. but now that you mention it, the American and German groups, though ideologically located at the opposite extremes, are nevertheless bedfellows when it comes to schismatic tendencies, two sides of the same coin. as for having a "sensible take on anything at all," i can send you a copy of my diploma of the doctorate in church history, summa cum laude, at the Pontifical Gregorian University.
@@anthonydecastro6938 So you're a summa cum laude doctrinaire brainwashed leftist. Makes sense.
The only bedfellows are Pope Francis and the German Synodal Way's schismatic and heretical advocates.
And of course, Bishop Heiner Wilmer, loudmouthed advocate of the German Synodal Way’s most controversial proposals was Pope Francis' first choice as Prefect for the DDF.
So Francis had to settle for fellow Argentinian pervert Smoochy Fernandez to be 'Protector of The Faith'
@@Jimboken1 What are you alleging against Cardinal Victor Fernandez?

John, despite everything, I love you. LOLOLOLOLOL SO good to see your face and hear your voice again! (Hate the 'sartorial' grey jacket though. LOLOLOLOL)
After 10 years the bloodied damaged Church begins to ask whether She can survive yet more from Team Francis.
Where to go when the hierarchy no longer believe in the Faith?
John, you lost, because you quoted Schism in the title of your video!
How many Malabar churches are there? If you look beyond those in communion with Rome they are legion!!! I think you need to see this rupture in this larger context of a deeply fracture Christian community.
I think he will get to Russia.
I doubt the Patriarch will let him in
You might be right!@@BCSTS

O Papa foi precipitado ! Mais valia calar-se 😮
Shiu! Para dizer estupidez melhor ficar caladinha minha senhora.
@@carlosfilipecodinha Literally millions of catholics pray daily that Pope Francis would stop mouthing off.
Particularly to atheist reporters on 1 to 1 basis and the dreadful Vatican press corp at 30,000 feet.
The Pope can't get Catholics around the world to get along -- but he thinks he can make Russia and China see the light. Right. 🙂 Btw, John, I've never been on Twitter (well, that's not quite true), but thanks to you, I'm thinking of joining X. LLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL In 40 seconds! vive le synode allemand... Il doit être généralisé..
the problem of the Church in Italy and Europe is that its clerics WAIT for the people to come to them rather than GOIND OUT to seek them out.
Good luck. I'm out.
Mass attendance -- I'm tellin' ya, John: The Church is in trouble. //// Mass attendance and Soccer? Really, John? Fallacious argument. smh

You fail to note China India Russia and Saudi are full members of APEC. This group has far more influence than the BRICS which will have 6 new members from Jan 1. Ethiopia will be one of them inconsequential for sure. Sorry Mr Allen APEC which meets again in India next week The Vatican and pope are not a member It has no political influence there and even less in BRICS. Fact. no influence among top 20 economic powers. Zuppi also has no influence Putin never met him when in Moscow. sidelined
