Just the best rock band on the planet today, no song like another yet all amazing in their own way. I haven't had much in the way of music I really cared for in decades until I discovered these ladies early last year. They truly saved my love of rock n roll and music in general. Enjoy your journey exploring all they have to offer as they will leave you in awe and a smile on your face.

Rare to see a truly original "reaction" video on BAND-MAID and especially this song. Excellent passion and understanding of what is actually going on.
As a musician in todays worls, and added element is this band is self made. Not a studio band, not an assembly of a talent agency. After some tough first years, they now compose and develop their own songs themselves and are absolute live performance beasts. Maybe one of the best true bands Ive seen in nearly 60 years.

I think that this track in particular lends itself to a really feel-good groove, not to mention the emotion evoked by the smiles of the performers enjoying their work. Warning (mv) off of their newest album, Unseen World 2021. Fast pace song.
Black Hole (audio version) also off of their newest album. It's their fastest song they have; it gets to 220bpm.
Different (mv) an anime opening for season 3 of Log Horizon.
Rinne (mv) their heaviest song they have.
Dice (mv) song opens with drums and bass.
Secret My Lips (mv) I like her drumming in this one.

You mentioned their music not sounding repetitive, which is certainly true. BAND-MAID goes out of their way to keep things interesting for the listener: throwing in new riffs or patterns in the 2nd verse to distinguish it from the 1st verse, leading into the chorus in different ways each time, or switching up the vocals to keep you on your toes.

Welcome aboard, Vand3rHorst. You are embarking on (along with many others - 100 million YT views!) an awesome hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Consistency (over a 110 songs with their latest album, “Unseen World”), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destine for mega-stardom. Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off the rails spectacular.
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 70 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: th-cam.com/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/w-d-xo.html Their later songs from albums Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, and Just Bring It drive even more - Manners, Different, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Glory, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on. But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, About Us, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts! And many are represented with over 35 well produced music videos. th-cam.com/users/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE concerts such as Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA on February 14th (“Domination” th-cam.com/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/w-d-xo.html), ZEPP 2018, Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 and some of the better 2019 tour Fan vids. Here’s three of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at super intimate venues. The first taken by Vladimir Chupin in Hamburg: th-cam.com/video/__1th7ctgMo/w-d-xo.html, the second taken by JT Dayo in LA: th-cam.com/video/4uIYBkAybCI/w-d-xo.html, and third, JOSER8845 in LA: th-cam.com/video/usWZvlGGDSs/w-d-xo.html. If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid. For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009
Band-Maid members are: (Ages are best est.).
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 27 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen!
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 29 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no… KURUPPO!!
Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 29 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 30 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumRilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 28 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note.. uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!

You will learn soon enough that these ladies ROCK!
They are a very talented group. They are all well trained in various instruments.
MIKU (Rhythm guitar) is the originator of this band. She was the lead singer but stepped back and brought in SAIKI as the lead singer.
Jimi Page has recognized AKANE (the Drummer) back in 2016.
KANAMI (lead guitar) writes the music with MIKU writing the lyrics.
MISA (the Bass player) - is a tremendous player as well.
There is not a bad song from BAND MAID - 7 Albums and many singles to date.
REAL EXISTENCE - AFTER LIFE - ABOUT US (a song for us the fans!) - PLAY - BLOOMING - DICE - All great songs!
All songs are on Spotify! Try ARCADIA GIRL - FREEZER - MATCHLESS GUM

Everyone agrees that the playing ability is excellent, but the timing and ensemble are particularly excellent, so it feels good to listen to. Especially the rhythm section of Akane and Misa is transcendent. I think it's no exaggeration to say that Misa's baseline is almost a lead. It gets even better when Kanami's melodic guitar riffs and solos are involved.

Ok, this is my absolutely favorite reaction of any Band-Maid song. You have only reacted to one song, but you are already know that the composition of the song is something special. I can tell you what, it takes many listeners several Band-Maid songs to noticed the genius in how the songs are composed while you got it on your first try. Kanami, the lead-guitar, is the brain behind all songs and she leaves no stones unturned. Everything has a purpose and repetition is anathema. You are going to love reacting to Band-Maid :D

Japan struck me a couple of years ago with Yoyoka and even before that I saw a Japanese movie called Swing Girls about school students who learn to play musical instruments and Big Band music. It was fantastic! Then Yoyoka came up one day on youtube and I saw her play something with Audrey and Kate (japanese bilingual girls who play Rocksmith) and collaborated on Bulls on Parade and that led me to Baby Metal which led me to click on Band-Maid on the side and since last February I am a die-hard BM fan. I have all their stuff and learning japanese. It has been a joyous ride as I discovered Nemophila and Lovebites and Herman Li and others.
Ian Paice is my fav drummer and saw them (Deep Purple) Live in 1973. Made in Japan is my fav live album and the Maids in Japan are my fav group. hehe I think Ian and the others left their DNA musical skills there for the future haha. BM has made me to bring out all of my old CDs and Rainbow and Led and all the others because they have Refreshed the Rock scene with their absolute genius ability to perform and compose. They are wonderful ladies as you will discover if you go into their lives and how they started and their streams and friendship.

It's good you mentioned the "nothing sounds repetitive". That's actually a big sticking point for Kanami (lead guitar) who writes the majority of their musical arrangements. She wants people to feel things and stay engaged, and she writes everything with that in mind. Their second verses are always arranged differently from the first to keep things refreshing. Also to her a solo is not a chance to show off, but something to inspire emotions in the audience.
If you pay attention to their faces when they play, they love playing this song and they love messing around with each other. During the second verse when Kanami (lead guitar) is sitting next to Miku (rhythm guitar), she's actually poking fun at Miku because she forgot part of this song the previous time they played it so Kanami was watching her to make sure she "didn't forget again", in a joking loving way of course. And when Saiki (singer) and MISA (bassist) are surrounding Akane (drums), they are all making faces at each other to try to screw each other up. You'll notice Akane makes a monkey face, because they call her "Gorilla", for her tendency to beat the hell out of her drums and her love of bananas.

Freedom is about personal freedom, like a declaration of my independence. Basically saying I am me, I'm going to run my life my own way, and you can accept me as I am or go away. And they do it in a way that is not negative at all, but (clearly) triumphant and joyful.
You already know it's an awesome song, just wanted to point out the subject matter helps drive the performance.

He gets it...That this is about them, the performers. How many others out there get it?....most are slaves of their ego !

I really enjoyed hearing (well, the song of course) but your take on their songwriting especially. They're legendary for continuously thinking outside the verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge blah blah format. And yet, this song is actually one of their more basic in terms of structure. They accomplish variety by switching singers, have both a drum and guitar solo (but a cool middle transition thingy) and then a "down low" version of the same theme, etc. Most of all though, this song is so damn exuberant - they're having a blast up there. The common theme with Band-Maid is they'll leave you smiling and feeling happy. Every time. Oh, and I apologize in advance if I'm wrong here, but I totally get your comment about not knowing people could be that good on instruments. I knew, but I'm over 60 - we had some serious virtuosos to listen to in my day. Band-Maid is so awesome because they're taking what was so great about the golden age of hard rock and making it new and alive. Love. This. Band,.

Oh my gosh, you have opened the floodgates. Been WONDERING when you would get to Band-Maid!!!!!
Why do you love this? Because they may be the best rock group in the world today. (My opinion? Best rock group since the Beatles.) You are going to get a lot of suggestions. Here is a little background on the girls:
Saiki Atsumi - Lead vocals Born Feb 8, 1994 27 years old
MISA - Bass Born Oct 15, 1992 28 years old
Kanami Tono - Lead guitar Composer and main arranger Born Sept 28, 1991 29 years old
Miku Kobato - Rhythm guitar, backing vocal Born Oct 21, 1991 29 years old
Akane Hirose - Drums Born Dec 14, 1990 30 years old
Miku envisoned the idea of a maid-band that plays hard rock and metal. She recruited Kanami, who recruited Akane, who recruited MISA. Then they collectively recruited Saiki. Miku didn't know how to play guitar, so Kanami has been teaching her. She's become good so fast that Maidiacs are daring to dream of a dual solo.

14:02 Years ago in a Rolling Stone article on the Dixie Dregs, the author related how he was backstage during a concert and saw Steve Morse facing a wall running his fingers up and down the fret board on his unplugged guitar while a keyboard and drum solo was underway on stage. "What are you doing?" he asked him. Steve looked at him incredulously and said, "I'm practicing". Ronnie James Dio may be great, but when 5-time Guitar Player of the Year and continued living legend Steve Morse thinks to practice even DURING a show, you know there's something to be said for the habit.

Yes! I believe they are. And I see a parallel in Band-Maid and Rush's grassroots kind of popularity too. Not driven by some big studio media blitz, but by people sharing their music and buying their albums and filling any venue they played. It happened with Rush and it's happening again with Band-Maid. The talent and adventurous quality, their dedication to making the hearer's experience awesome not only in the studio but also in concert, lead to fans sharing links with friends and saying stuff like, "Dude you gotta hear this! I really, really enjoy watching someone react to Band-Maid for the first time, seeing the delight and then the dawning realization that they're not just seeing an excellent band, but something truly special. And the more songs they see the more that first reaction is validated for them. It's beautiful. (If you're at all interested in rap, I see the same thing when people react to a v-tuber rapper by the name of Calliope Mori. Check the Greek muse of the same name for pronunciation.)
Regarding talent vs practice, though, and I'm afraid the science disagrees on that. A natural inclination can make it easier, but you don't actually need it in order to achieve a high level of skill. All you need is practice, practice, practice. If you practice enough, you will get there. This comes from a friend who's a psychologist and researcher at a university so it's legit. I have argued the point and been smacked down by Science enough that I don't question it anymore, lol. I think it's a good thing to know, though, that if you put in the work and practice, it doesn't matter if you have talent or not, you can still get to that high level.

Great review! You just have opened Pandora Box and it is a good thing. This Band needs to be illuminated and supported to ensure they have a long sustained career. They are not only world class musicians but damn good songwriters. I would like to request more starting with Puzzle (Live), Moratorium (Live), Play (Live), Rienne (MV), Real Existence (Live or MV), Warning (MV), Dice (MV), Blooming (MV), Alone (MV) better stop there otherwise I will list every track. And speaking of the track Alone there is one performance captured by a fan at the London Comic Con 2016 which had been somewhat legendary due to it being shot from side stage perspective in which you can witness Akane slaying the drums the entire time. That video was recently re-uploaded and despite the amateur video quality it is worth viewing Akane destroying the drums. I believe that as a drummer yourself it would be something worth checking at on your own rather than using that version if you ever plan to review the song Alone in the future. If you do decide to review it I would recommend the Music Video instead. I have provided the fan shot of "Alone" at the following link: th-cam.com/video/2nJ2rsyDu6A/w-d-xo.html

Great job man. A lot of insights. Drummer: Akane Hirose, for me the most creative drummer out there. Band Maid plays (and compose) Hard Rock but they use to blend with mastery funk, prog, pop, jazz or metal (many times during the same song!). This is a straight forward rock song with a stunning drum solo but I´m sure you will enjoy even more the complicated drum patterns in most of their music. Their last album (Unseen World) is an absolute masterpiece. You´ve mentioned Neil Peart. Some of the drumming compositions in that album are only available to the greatest.

I'm Japanese, but unfortunately I'm not young, so I don't know much about BANDMAID. (This is the first time I've listened to them). The vocal sings in Japanese, but I could hardly hear what she is saying...
I wonder why they are so popular abroad, too, in spite of they sings only Japanese? But the drums were very cool (and other instruments too).
By the way, Akane Hirose the drummer doesn't disclose own age (maybe around 28 now?). She said she started drums when she was 18yo. The band debuted in 2013, so she became a pro within a few years of started to drums. I'm a little curious to see how she played when the band was debuted.
Thank you for introducing me to this. Your explanations are always very easy to understand.

They are popular outside of Japan because THEY'RE GOOD. REALLY, REALLY GOOD. When you're as good musically as they are, the language she is sung in becomes less important.

Akane is the oldest and is 30 years old. The youngest is Saiki, 27 years old. The band was formed when the members were around 20 years old. Kobato, who formed the band, dropped out of Kumamoto's public university in a year and came to Tokyo to become a singer. She was chasing her dream while working at a maid cafe. Now Kobato is writing all the lyrics and she is an intelligent and willing woman.
They write, compose, and arrange all the songs with band members, and have the power to perform live more than in the studio. In addition, they are close friends like a family and have a friendly and friendly relationship, and they are serious about music and are growing day by day. I think there are many people who are attracted to their musicianship. The lock lovers, there are a lot of charm that will want to support.

Does the sung language matter when the instrumental part already speaks such a clear language that everyone can understand? 😉
I think the main reason why the ladies get attention in Europe and America is because they create the type of music that has been missing or rarely heard here for a damn long time. And they deliver it just like that, song after song, like on an assembly line and even offer stylistic variety. And with that I think you have at the same time the reason why you can find a lot of older semesters among their fans. I'm a 40yo German btw. Most (not all!) of the younger generations have never heard good rock or classic rock 'n roll and are contaminated by today's media crap. Sorry, for the harsh expression and if someone feels attacked by it. But in my opinion, a very large part of what you get served today is just big BS.
