Orphan Rhino Hawk Not Feeling Well

- Petronel and the Care for Wild team recently responded to a radio call from the guards protecting the released rhinos in the Intensive Protection Zone. One of our Rhino Monitors reported that Hawk was not feeling well. Hawk had stopped eating and was very lethargic and quiet. Petronel and Dr Albertus Coetzee, from West Acres Animal Hospital, went out to investigate.
Hawk’s temperature was normal, no fever. He was slightly dehydrated but this was to be expected and so the team set about giving fluids. Next, Dr Albertus checked Hawk’s faeces through a rectal exam and confirmed that there were no blockages in his digestive tract. A blood sample was also taken for further testing.
As the examination of Hawk was drawing to a close, we were still unclear as to what could be causing Hawk’s sudden lethargy and inappetence. Dr Albertus decided to perform one final check and began to feel inside Hawk’s mouth. Suddenly all became clear! Dr Albertus could feel a loose upper molar. Hawk was teething! He was loosing his baby teeth and was simply feeling a bit under the weather and most likely quite sore. With a bit of extra TLC and care, Hawk was completely back to normal in a few days, having regained his appetite and energy.

Having cared for everything from snakes to horses, I always start at the head and work my way back as far as looking for the problem is concerned. So many things go wrong in the mouth! So glad this dude's feeling better.

Oh poor boy. If only they could talk, he could have told you, "there's no need to poke about in my rear end, it's my mouth that's sore"😂 Glad the problem was found and solved
You'd think they would have checked his mouth first?
Problems with these symptoms are usually gut related, but maybe next time they'll start at the other end, before getting elbow deep in it 😂
He's so handsome. He's growing up, getting his permanent teeth.
