Words can't express the influence these people have had on my playing! I play fiddle and whistle, since 2000. Over the last 22 years, Altan's inspired me so much - I've learnt nearly all their recorded tunes (well, maybe 80%), as well as spending time in Donegal, which was unbelievable to be at sessions playing all their tunes locally! I doubt I'll ever find a session again where there was such an eclectic mix of tunes; in addition to all the "old standards," there was the whole Donegal and Scottish/cape Breton repertoire, they even played polkas and slides! Donegal is truly a musical melting pot of Ireland and of Europe, really... the Germans/schottisches (barndance), mazurkas and more is amazing.
I think at 2:37 it's the Rosses Highlands. Amazing sound with all those instruments. It helps also that the Rosses Highlands is about the best tune there is.
As someone who played trad irish and scottish music before going into orchestra, I strongly prefer the trad side of it! Orchestra was too restrictive for me
Thank you! I love you guys. Thanks for coming to the states. George and Pat put us together for an evening and it was magic. OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
