So glad to see you using 45 deg junctions instead of tees. I really don't like the 90 deg tees I see you use in other down pipe vids. Why can't you use underground 45 deg junctions on roof water downpipe systems? I think they flow better. Good channel keep it up.

You know I don’t know about companies up north and how they do thier systems.. all I know is I have watched your videos over and over till I was sure I knew how to do it myself.. I even did a video chatt with you to get advice..I installed my system in my yard and in my crawl space by myself and I am a woman..my system is working great and moving the water.. I did this by watching your videos and can say that your way of doing a French drain has proven to be the correct way.. plz keep the videos coming bc they will help diy home owners.. thx chuck

I have watched a whole bunch of your videos, and made notes, and her I go. I have a horribly wet yard, water damage in my crawlspace, and neighbors draining onto me. It will take me a long time, but I am going to dig footer tile, and dig french drain, and get my house on dry land. I learn something from every one of your videos so thank you Chuck. I have never attempted anything like this but I can't afford to pay anybody so I bought a shovel. Clay dirt, Kentucky climate, it will take me a while but I am stubborn and this is the home I bought myself to retire in. I got it to do.

Born in Clearwater and raised in Onsted Michigan. I watch both your channel and the one “up north”. I think your correct in that there is different soil types and different weather to be sure. Also, I like your attitude about the whole situation. Don’t bash each other, at the very least agree to disagree.
I have watched all your videos and I learned so much. I gain the courage to do my own French drain my yard was like a swamp and the side of my house had sitting water when it rained. I dug all the way down to the footer which was about two and a half feet since I have an above-ground basement all the way to the back of the house which is about 45 ft and across the entire yard which was over another hundred feet into the storm drain, now on the water is completely gone. I have tons gallons of groundwater that never stops comingand because of this I decided I was going to use three pipes two parallel to each other next to the footer and one right above in the middle for when it snows or a hard rain fall it was the best thing I did the ground is completely dry within hours thanks so much for your videos and your support you with me one shovel at a time.
The concept is feasible, akin to a drinking straw! One just needs a plan, tools, materials, and equipment. At DIY'er will probably only save on *his* labor while hiring beaucoup people for transporting gravel and other heavy stuff.
It's simple for a professional with assets he uses daily. It's a pain in the butt for a one-time venture.

Thanks for doing these videos. I’ve been watching numerous channels over the past few months to figure out my own drainage problems. I had a small wet spot in my yard and decided to dig a French drain system. Used a lot of ideas from this channel and others. The amount of water that has drained is unreal, and it’s not even finished yet.

Great info. I ran into two areas around this house. One is soggy like in this video and the other a needed pathway for all the water in the yard to drain. Based on Chucks advise, especially around 4 minutes into this video, I used gravel with pipe for the yard drain and the perforated /Styrofoam product for the soggy area.

My double drive has a little slope.
To fix i added a 6" catch basin.
I added a 6 inch piece of a/c filter
Inside the green cap. Held in with long zip tie, all seems to work, drive way dry, trash on top of green cap

Excellent video, ty! I use a sub compact tractor to mow and do other work in our yard... with the front end loader and rear ballast weight, the tractor can weight 2500-3000 pounds. Will the French drain and catch basins support that much weight without getting damaged? Thanks!

So much conflicting info on the internet. Two seemingly highly-competent drainage experts. One says put gravel under pipe, the other says don't. One says EZFlow is good, one says it's terrible. One says catch basins are important, the other says they're detrimental to the system. One says to wrap entire trench in fabric, the other says there's no need.
One demonstrates affordable solutions, one uses a clown car convey of heavy equipment for the basement tier service fee of $25k and your first born....
There’s only one right way to do things. You decide which way you think is best. As a business owner and state licensed inspector, I see the hard work of great handymen performed on clients homes everyday. These contractors do their best, give endless effort and try to do it for a reasonable fee. Unfortunately, most of the work doesn’t meet the current standards, has a short life due to poor quality of materials, inevitable damage from faulty installation and often creates safety concerns. Many times it’s a series shortcuts taken in order to save time and money. The worst thing is to hire the wrong person to do something the wrong way. It will always cost more to redo the work done improperly from the start. I love my neighbor, friend, family member in the business, but I would hire them for the job!

I stay on the West Coast of Scotland.
I installed a 50 metre french drain across the back of the property into a stream. My land runs from the back to the front .
Initially this helped the problem but the soil on the low side of the field drain has become extremely boggy which I don't understand? There's no grass as we were looking to put down a Taram membrane and then put chips on top and have raised beds..
A neighbour has suggested we need to put in organic matter to help the soil?
The area is 60 feet x 60 feet..
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi, I was happy to see your videos. I leave in the South Pacific, and we get lots of rain. The material you show being used has to be shipped to the island. Please advise how we can make a French drain, with materials we have available. We do have the 4" drain pipes for sewer lines.

What do you do if you're in a rural area and have had standing water starting back in 2018???? I understand the french drain but can't do it until the standing water is removed.
You are so good at this Chuck! I have a really soggy area where my sump pump discharges. But I think there's a little more to it because my sump pump doesn't run that often. New construction with very compacted clay, so even a little bit of water from the sump pump just lays on top of the soil. This area is at the property line between our house and the one next door which is still under construction and not sodded yet. I'm not sure what needs to be done but we have really poor drainage and a wet, soggy area that's about a foot wide and five or six feet long. I'm wondering if it will get better once the yard next door is sodded.

Hi! Will a good French drain work in wet soggy clay soil? Will it pick up the underground water?
I need to configure a catch basin between the gravel/pipe drain and the perforated/styrofoam pipe. The latter is actually lower than the final gravel/pipe drain. I dug down farther when I saw the water level in the ground. So this section will have to fill the bottom of the catch basin. When the water level rises enough, it will flow out the gravel/pipe section toward the street. The rest will just have to soak into the ground. I may have to make my own catch basin or modify a store bought one.
I had my experience with what I wouldn’t call a bad contractor. Hired them to do a simple job I could have done myself, to do the right thing. Funny thing is I actually forgot to check if they had a license

I looked online , Craigslist, and phone book. I’m finding landscapers either won’t come to Gilroy or they don’t want to take on the challenge. The clay soil here is horrible

Hi thank you for the videos! do you need a catch basin if you bring gravel to grade?
No you don’t. You just want to make sure and wrap the gravel/pipe section and then put more gravel on top (top 2-3 inches at grade). That way if you ever need to refresh your gravel, it’s only the top few inches.

All I want to see at the end of all of these videos is how it actually works...I want to see water discharging. I want to see the results...water flowing out to the street. Maybe even a video during a storm showing the water moving.

Help. Our back yard slopes down, opposite sidewalk. And water sits on our lawn just like in this video. Should I call a plumber for French drain or would landscaping companies be able to do it more properly?

where in FL are you? i don't have this much work to do. However when the city repaved the street my driveway is now below the street making all rain water drain into my front yard & all the way down my driveway toward the house. i have a rainwater ditch near the road which did work having a place to go from my property. Now the city street water fills my ditch leaving standing rain water no place to go but back toward my home. Even if i installed french drains the water would return back to my property. What do i do? Thanks!

The neighbour's will be happy, didn't spend a cent, and had their problems solved. Now they can soak the ground again by needlessly using irrigation.
What causes a super wet soil? I have clay soil, I do not have sprinkles and when I dig, my soil is super moist, not dripping wet but super moist as if watered it.
I have a spot where I planted 3 different king of trees and the three have died. I do not understand where the wetness is coming from.

So the catch basins should be dotted all over the top soggy lawn areas to drain into the French drain..? ok. I've got the French drain but it's still soggy all over cause I'm only catching water at the top of the pipe

Maybe install native plants that can actually properly allow proper water infiltration unlike turfgrass. Also provides wildlife habitat, prevents erosion and stormwater runoff.

question how does this work if your property is lower than the street? My drainage ditch is below the street along with my house.

We have soggy wet ground up north here also..just saying. 😉 case in point my inlaws yard is super soggy and my wifes dad hand dug a crappy trench just like that customer in the video had done. I wish y'all did work up here. I would recommend they hire you.
Edit: to clarify..the crappy trench is not the one you are digging. Lol
My wifes dad just half assedly dug a zig zaggy trench across his whole back yard.

debris flows into the catch basin, and you clean those out regularly. That's the purpose of the catch basin.

I’ve heard people say never use corrugated black pipe for downspouts, only PVC plastic. Any truth to this? I notice you’re using corrugated.
We're in NY and my yard is soggy all the time. It's the clay. Hopefully putting in a french drain helps

@@alyciab3075 hire someone! I did it all myself and it took forever but I put in about 150 feet. Don't try to hand dig. I rented an excavator and had it dug out in a few hours. It's been working really well though!

Typically you lay the fabric in the trench and then the pipe and rocks. So it’s all wrapped.
Don't get your whole up north bit not knowing what it's like.
My well is only 15' deep. Any rain here results in fields being full of water and driveway covered in water.
Nothing but muddy clay with no where for the water to go. I'd need several dry wells but that would be such a huge job to do by myself.
Had my share of cold - rain and snow! Weeks of cloudy days with no Sunshine?? Would not go back for good or platinum. and once drywall is full of water, it goes nowhere!! But thanks for sharing your thoughts 😃
