Your videos are giving me the confidence to tackle these jobs on my w39. It would be tremendous help if you included torque specs when doing these jobs. Thanks
Hope videos like these teaches the car dealerships a lesson about over charging us and that we can do maintenance and preventative maintenance ourselves… one word: obsolete!
Your work and attention to detail is amazing. Loved your detailed writeups at Jalopnik too - keep up the great work and thank you for the excellent content!
I believe it is advised to put sealant (three bond or similar) on the three half moons. It seems a little bit tricky to remove the vanos rings, I would be afraid to damage something with the cutter. But not sure there is another way... For the CCV if you remove the oil filter it should be really easy. Thanks for the video!
Those are good points. I wish there was a better way to remove the vanos seals but a careful hand with the blade works ok. It may have been hard to see but RTV was used in the half moons.
@practical enthusiast Sorry I didn't catch this earlier while you were doing the VANOS and had the valve cover off, but strongly recommend you replace, with a silicone line, that vacuum line from the rear of the intake manifold, running along the rear then right side of the engine up to the secondary air source. That will be one big gotcha that could erode all the terrific refresh work you've done. More painful with the valve cover reinstalled, but a must.
I’ve done just about everything to my e39 and it has a lack of power in the first gear! This is the only thing I haven’t done! I think you gave me the answer!
I squirted a little oil in the feed hole before mounting it up to the engine, but honestly doesn't need it since they're thrust/roller bearings. Oil will populate them within a few seconds of start up.
@@PracticalEnthusiast That's why I think I will stick to older Mercs. Yes they're not as sexy, don't handle as well and generally don't come with manual trannys like BMWs, but the M119 and M112/M113 engines are generally bulletproof which makes a big difference if you're not super mechanically inclined.
Do you need to reset ADAPTATION after the rebuild? I done mine following your video and many other...but once fitted back the engine idle is all over the place...and then engine stalls. Checked both camshaft Sensors and they working ok. The timing asnt been touched as I only removed the vano assembly and nothing else. Suggestions? Thank you for your time

I don't know exactly because I've devided up all these tasks in order to make videos, so the time it takes me is 2-3 times longer than it would normally. I would expect at least a full weekend.

This channel is always inspiration for when I finally get a garage
I’m looking for a place with a garage now so I can repair my own shit. Good luck!
Fascinating to watch man and am looking forward to the rest.
Thank you. Much more on the way!
Just rebuilt mine with the Beisan seals. Fairly easy job.
Your video has given me the confidence to make this repair myself. Thank you for taking the time to make it
OMG! So great channel!!! How do you know so much about so many different kind of engines/brands? Ducati, BMW and so on....amazing!
You are a professional ,l love every move and l have understood a lot of your teachings. You are a good mechanic

Which part of the video was that (half moons)? Thank you!

Excellent tutorial!!!!! I'll be sure to make sure new metal gaskets are supplied with the Vanos rebuild kit!
I wish you mentioned how to tighten the top nut with the impact when it’s on the vice. Did you impact wrench it 3 times? Thanks
Great video, well done, looking forward to the next one, good luck
Great work 👍🏻👍🏻 More e39 & F10 content please

was it the issue
Thanks 🎉
Nice, but how much tourqe on vanos bolts should I use?
Nice job!!!! Curious..No lube when re-assembling the anti rattle?

How often on average does VANOS need overhaul in these e39s?
Right around 70-80k miles is usual.
@@PracticalEnthusiast Imo BMW dropped the ball if the actual life expectancy is really 70-80k of their variable valve timing 😬
@@AK47Stalin BMW drops the ball on basically everything when it comes to component lifespans 😂

What would happen if you overly tighten the t30 screw to the point it strips and you still move on with the installation?

What are the torque specs for Vanos rebuilt?
Great video mate, well done.
Hey Dude...Nice work again...Just checking is it alright to remove the vanos without locking the cam shaft? tqs
Yep! No need to lock cam shafts for this job 👍
how would you know if the o-ring is a real viton other then trusting the seller?thanx
do you know what is the part number and the name of "cover" between air cabin holes 13:40?
The elbow piece that goes between the firewall and the cabin air filter housing?
