    I've had two R1250rs and have enjoyed them immensely, last year I crossed over to the R1250r, no regrets. In my humble opinion it's undeniably more fun to ride and handle, probably a more versatile bike. Put a fly screen on it to help the wind blast and you are good to go on tour. PS. Don't tell everyone, its BMWs best kept secret!

      I have ridden one from new for 3 years now. Wear ear plus, you will not notice the wind blast. Fairings take away the naked bike experience. If I want wind protection, I drive my car.

    Many years ago my GS was in for a service and they lent me the R model. I absolutely loved it.

  • @jontaylor5322

    I've had the 1250RS this last couple of years & really enjoyed it. Euro trips, NC500, commuting etc, etc.
    I've recently traded it for this, the 1250R. I was loned an R when the RS had its main service & realised straight away, the R is a much better handling bike, no wrestling it into corners, not that I really realised at the time, but after the R, defo had to wrestle the RS, the R just goes into corners, nice n easy.
    I recon its all down to the front axle, it's the only difference I can see. On the RS, the axle is kicked out an inch or more from the bottom of the forks, making it more stable. The axle on the R is directly beneath the forks, making the steering effortless & more Fun.....
    Also, my Hepo Co Xceed panniers go straight on for Spain trip in a few months... 👍👍👍

    The R has always been an underrated bike, always in the shadow of the RS and the GS. That said it looks like those roads really flatter the bike, cant see it being so much dynamic fun on the UK's poorly maintained chilly roads with questionable grip for 85% of the year.

    Just watched your TL1000s review from a year ago, and I'd love to see more old/classic reviews from you Dan. My special request would be the RSV Tuono gen 1... Very cool bike that doesn't have any good reviews for it

    Your reviews are proper fun Dan. I've just swapped my much loved vstrom for a r1200r lc and luuuuuuv the torque. Fantastic handling with mega controllable brilliant power. Gonna add 25mm return on the bars for more relaxed all day riding 🌠

    My last bike was an 1100R, and before that I had 2 x 1100RT, a 1200RT, and my first beemer was an 1150GS...... I just loved the lazy torque and the handling.
    Steve

    • @malcolmabram2957

      Torque is an underrated feature. I have a R1250R, and in the past a GSXR750R. One works the Suzuki engine to get the power. The BM just delivers even at low revs. Dont even need to drop gear to overtake, it just pulls. Different riding style, if one likes that of course. I never rev the engine above 4000 rpm, no need.

  • @malcolmabram2957

    At public roads speeds, the R1250R has pretty much the same performance figures as a ZX10 (acceleration times, which tests a range of bikes and cars). I bet also that it handles better too. I have one, and it was for me £217 to insure last year, the cheapest ZX10 quote was £1050. I have been riding bikes since 1979, and the BM is the best, it never lets me down, except it often does not start in really cold weather, which does upset me. My BM dealer admitted it is an issue with the bike (all 1250s) and one needs to buy a specialist battery charger.

    Should have got one of these instead of the 1250 GS as i only ride on the road and im a short arse. However it just didn't come on my radar. Tried the RS but that was too sporty and cramped. Bit pissed off that the dealership never brought the R to my attention.

      I've got a 28 inside leg ... you can get a low seat version for it, and I'm flat footed on it ... I love my 1250R (triple black) and a small screen and hand guards like a gs has.

    • @paulyflyer8154

      @chrislecouteur2360 Funnily enough with just my 30 inch leg I can flat foot my standard GS, but just find it a bit bulky for what I need.
      I found a nice R last year with a tall screen and colour coded panniers like an RS which if it hadn't involved losing money on a trade in I would have gone for.

  • @madrat5176

    I don’t understand riding modes 😂. Other than rain mode for a specific situation, it should be full power at all times. Control it with the THROTTLE HAND. What’s with multiple rider modes that do nothing but handicap the engine? I just don’t get it. Bikes were so much cooler in the 90s…

    • @Englishbikerdan

      You don't have to use them, so just stick it in Dynamic Pro and forget the rest. I think it's good to have more options should you want them.

    • @madrat5176

      @@Englishbikerdan I know I’m in the minority in this, but why have 60% modes and 80% modes, etc. If it’s too much power, get a smaller bike. The engine should never be handicapped. Kind of baffles me that people like this.

    • @garethcoombs1622

      @@madrat5176
      The only mode affected with reduced power % is eco mode; rain, road, dynamic and dynamic-pro are all at 100%. It’s the throttle action that varies, in other words, the amount of “twist” required.

    • @madrat5176

      @@garethcoombs1622 You still mentioned three that reduces power, and then two that still alters throttle response. Why have two different modes that alter throttle response 😂. It’s such overkill that’s there just for the sake of being there

    • @garethcoombs1622

      @@madrat5176
      No, no, you’ve misunderstood my rather garbled message. What I meant to say is that the only mode that has reduced power is ECO mode but all the other modes use full power. To complicate things, on the R1250R you are only allowed to program 4 out of the 5 modes so probably most riders don’t bother with the ECO.
