Excellent analysis Alexander. I would add however that striking Iran directly carries with it Pandora’s box. With the world as geopolitically unstable as it is, it's doubtful that the international structure could handle an all out war in the middle east, especially with one of the parties having nuclear capabilities. The likelihood of escalation in the region is increasing all the time, and as Alex said, the chances that an escalation occurs that leads to direct strikes on Iran in the coming weeks or months is scarily high. The scale and magnitude of the political circus in DC at the moment is perhaps overshadowing the current geopolitical events by downplaying their significance. The escalatory ladder to nuclear launch is afoot in the middle east, and I do not believe the people in power in DC have the capabilities to provide an off ramp. Uncharted waters lay ahead.
You can be sure that Russia and China, albeit covertly, will not idly stand by.
