Nice adventure! Enjoyed following along on your trek @23:17 - those "Noses" are the geological advantage that allowed NYS to be successful in building the Erie Canal nearly 200 years ago. @23:33 - E12 - Tribes Hill and Dam #8. SOOOOO Close to the confluence of the Mohawk and Schoharie Creek with the Schoharie Creek Aqueduct and our Visitor Center nearby! @23:37 - Lock E11 Amsterdam, did you glide right past the historic Yankee Hill Lock before you arrived? :o) @23:45 - The Mohawk Valley Gateway Overlook pedestrian bridge connecting the north and southside of Amsterdam - full of art and history and public events/programs during the warmer months.
Really enjoyed your video. I am planning a Erie Canal to Hudson to NYC Statue of Liberty paddle in 2024. It was recommended that I use a solo canoe on the Erie Canal as it says to be very difficult to get out of kayak at the many docks and at Locks where you want to camp. Canoe exits and entries would be much easier. Jeremy … would appreciate your input on using a canoe vs a kayak on the Erie Canal ?
Of course. I talked about this with other folks; kayaks are faster and easier to transport but canoes hold more gear, are more stable and allow you to move around in them. If you want a nice, casual trip, do the canoe. Plus you're less likely to roll should idiot boaters go ripping by you without slowing down.
Hey chax, great question. You need to radio in for larger boats to let the lock keeper know you're coming. For small crafts, such as canoes and kayaks, you can call them on your cellphone, state your direction of travel, request permission through, and they open the lock for you. The phone numbers are listed for each lock in the waterway trail maps made by the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.
I got to tell you this video you did is really awesome. This is a great video to get the towns along the canal to create an adventure for others, a kayak adventure. I like to know how did you transport your kayak around when you went into town. How did you find places to stay at. I've watched many videos on PBS and this holds up to being a really great video. You got reflection, obstacles, and beauty.
Thanks Barbara. I am currently working on a video that will outline all of the preparation for each trek and I will be certain to touch on your questions as well.
Thanks dude, I'll let her know. It took about 17 days to finish and I got to use the sail maybe three time. The wind doesn't get down in the Canal very well but when it does, it's awesome. The Canal flows east from Buffalo, west once you get to Syracuse, then back east once you pass Rome.
@@JessGraham I tip my hat Ma'am. I consider myself an avid paddler but i question my ability to string seven days worth of 25+ mile paddles. You did great and it warms the heart to see a Mother and Son on such an epic adventure.
@@choochoohikes Thanks. I've been eyeballing that trip for about a year but it's a little too far away to recon the route without taking time off, so it's been put on the back burner. Your video is pushing off the burner for sure.
Proud of you my friend great job you let me know what’s next
One less item in the bucket list, good job! This will be my next, after Trent Severn Waterways...
This is also amazing...
@15:39 We are watching and you are most welcome!
OMG you're bug spray saved my life. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing your adventures. This is awesome. So much planning ECT and not to mention all the work it takes to upload and edit videos.
Epic. How does this only have so few views!
@@Canoejerry I'm just a small man on a small channel. Thanks for the watch.

Yeah, I passed by Yankee Hill but it was late in the day. I paddled from Lock 12 through 10 in 2 hours.

Congratulations on a wonderful trek! And nice job joining along Mom!
Thanks!
I appreciate your honesty about this process.
How do the locks work. Do you have to radio in for to get through? Do they open on the hour?
Thanks

Dude your mom is a trooper.
How many days total?
Is there a current in the canal?
How much did you rely on the sail?

Thanks! I surprised even myself LOL! 😄

How many miles a day did you do?
Averaged around 25 to 30 miles per day.
