An Aunt made me a sock monkey over 60 years ago. I recently gave that one to my granddaughter. I've had a kit to make one for years and with your tutorial I think I'm ready to sew it!
I want to thank you for your wonderful video. I just finished my first sock monkey. My grandson 1st birthday at the end of May. I couldn't have done it without your video. It turned out really cute.
Found a sock monkey kit ages ago at a yard sale. Finally decided to make it for one of the grands for Christmas this year. Your tutorial was so well done (really appreciate no annoying music in the background!). You’re an excellent teacher. Oh - the little fella turned out super cute. May have to find some more socks for the other little kiddos!
That was the best presentation by this young lady, clear, detailed but not over done. She made an excellent teacher, now I can go home and make it. The directions to the socks was so unclear and detailed, I couldn't figure it out. Thank you very much, Lori
@MyLegoClub I agree! Each one is unique and has character. :) You can use regular novelty socks instead of the red heel. I actually found that the generic knee high sock I used was easier because it didn't unravel nearly as much as the original red heel did. I'll PM you a link so you can see a picture of my other monkey.
You truly are a rock star at giving us PERFECT directions for making the sock money!!! You explained everything slowly; clearly; and showed us every step!! THANK YOU,,,,
I made one of those about twenty some years ago and I still have 2 of the socks that my mother bought at that time and was wanting to make another one but needed a reminder of exactly how to do it. Thank you for the refresher!
Oh my goodness! Thank you sooo much for this video! I bought the 'kit' but the instructions were pretty basic. I can already tell 2:40 into your video my first cut was going to ruin my sock...lol My grandmother used to sew us sock monkeys for Christmas, so this year I wanted to bring back the tradition. Thank you so much for wonderful instructions that even a no-sewer like myself can easily follow! :)
@@ProfessorPincushion I'm sorry, I can't post bc I don't have a Facebook account. But the monkey turned out Adorable and my son loved it! Thanks again!
I used the traditional socks called the Rockford Red Heel by Fox River. If you google it, you should be able to find it. They also have blue and pink socks.
They aren't easy to find looking in retail stores. They're actually workman's socks so the only stores that seem to carry them are ones that supply workman clothes. But, luckily, they're easy enough to find online. Google Rockford Red Heel socks and you should find plenty of vendors. You can even find them at Amazon. Usually they come in a pack of 2 pairs. You need one pair to complete a monkey. Good luck! :)
I could NEVER have made this without your wonderful video. That being said, this project was WAY more difficult and WAY more time consuming than I initially thought.
You can hand sew it, it'll just take longer. I would just do a small running stitch to ensure that the stuffing doesn't come out. If you're unsure on how to do this stitch, watch our tutorial running stitch on our channel. good luck.
if you don't use a ribbon or string of some kind there will not be a defining head section separate from the body. You could just use a matching thread color to make it less noticeable.
Thanks for this great refresher. I made a dozen of these for a craft sale about six years ago and found this very useful. "I'm gonna go ahead" and thank you!
Your tutorial is outstanding! I am new to sewing and apprehensive about doing projects. Watching your tutorial has given me the confidence to do this project [sock monkey] thanks for sharing...
I want to see it! You can post it on our members' showcase on the Professor Pincushion website. I'm sure you did a great job. I've only use large socks and even then it's a little difficult to turn out the arms and tail. I'm impressed you went smaller but small is cute. :)
Thank you very much, Professor Pincushion! I got 4 pairs of monkey socks to make sock monkeys with four of my nieces when they stay with me for a day. I decided to make the youngest girl's sock monkey ahead of time to practice (she's only 1 and won't care). Turned out great, thanks to your instructions. The only thing I did differently was use thread to create the head and stitched it tightly in place, then tied on the ribbon. I was afraid otherwise the ribbon would come undone and the monkey's head would merge into it's body! I also learned some things I want to do differently with the next monkey, mainly I don't want to stuff it quite as hard as I did this one (look bit stretched some places). I plan to add a bit of fabric glue to some of my seams to make sure the monkey holds together well.
Sure, it'll just take some time and you have to make sure you're sewing straight. I would just use a small running stitch. Also, if you use a sock similar to this, it frays pretty badly so you want to work as quick as you can.
I love this video and I’m so happy you made it in such detail. I found a sock monkey at a retro/vintage themed store and it turns out shes from around the Second World War according to a note that came with her. Her name is Kimako and ever since I got her I’ve wanted to make so many siblings for her haha
Thank you so much! This is absolutely the very best tutorial out there to make a sock monkey. Your detailed instructions are amazing! Thanks again! 🐵❤️🐒
ha! If I don't get poked than I have no sewing battle scars to brag about. But normally you're pushing the needle through the fabric slow enough that you can feel it but it doesn't piece the skin. It's when you start jabbing the fabric that get you into trouble.
I've made these before & im s guy. My grandmother made me one, when I was little, so I tried it. Turned out bad ass. Now I make Ethnic ones. A friend of mine is Jewish , I put a little hat on him, some Hasidic curls, for sideburns & a Star of David necklace. It's a proud possession of his now
Great video which helped a lot after reading the instructions on the sock packaging. The one I am making will be dressed in an "old school" nurse uniform for a nurse friend. The dress and uniform are a McCall's Crafts pattern.
I don't think there's anyway to prevent this. I get it too so I just try and work quickly and carefully. After the body is stuffed, I use straight pins to push this area together so it doesn't get any worse before I stitch it. Then not only do I slipstitch the opening close, I also do some stitches over the run. That seems to help minimize the appearance of it. Good luck! I'd love to see your monkeys when you finish. :)
i know this is an old video but i really want to make a few of these. went to the suggested website but still cant find the socks to buy them. . can you help me please? xxoo
the link to the socks has been updated and is at the bottom of the wording in the blog. Buy the large sized socks. www.professorpincushion.com/professorpincushion/classic-sock-monkey/
I am excited to see this video. I remember as a Child, the sock monkey was very popular. I have seen a darling girl sock monkey with a hat and dress. Have you seen these? Also I think I have seen a boy sock monkey with little trousers and shirt.
I plan on putting Velcro on my sock monkeys' hands, feet and tails, so you can hang them up, make them hold hands, or hold other accessories that have Velcro strips, like the baby monkey that I made out of a pair of baby booties. A pet for the monkeys, like a little dog or cat, would be a neat idea.
i made it! :D it's looks so funny! it's smaller so it was harder to make it but now it's so funny and cute1 I'm thinking about another one :P ! thanks very much for this video!
What stitch do you recommend using to sew if your hand sewing the monkey because i have hand sewn many toys before but I never really knew what stitch to use when you hand sewing
+Sarah Gunter I normally just eye ball it. My arms are normally about 1 - 1 1/2" from the head on the side. The tail goes on the red part of the head. The ears are about parallel to the eyes.
When cutting the arms and tail rather than draw the line between the arms and have one with 2 seams and one with a fold, if you cut down the socks fold you then have 2 pieces you can fold over so each arm has only 1 seam. If you like a skinnier arm make a half inch seam instead of a quarter inch seam.
