Thank you for this! I'm doing research on Christmas presents of the 1930s and nearly fell into the sock monkey depression trap. But after watching this, I did some research and I also can't find any contemporary evidence to support the claim.
Really appreciate the thorough research you've done on this! The monkey turned out really cute too❤ If I were still a kid, I'd really enjoy learning to make this as like an intro to hand sewing 🐵❤🐵❤
There are pattern books, usually four a year. You can look through current books at Joann’s, WalMart, Hobby Lobby etc. BUT when I was a teen in the 1970s, they also produced home books that you could purchase
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! It was a lot of fun to make. I don't come across a ton of research rabbit holes in my daily crafting, but I grab them when I can. My cross stitch video featuring the Great Cookie War is the other one I have at the moment.
Just viewing this today. I had ordered from Amazon the original sock by Fox River. I just made one for my coming grandson in February!! AND his name is River (nothing to do with the sock brand…it was decided before I made the sock). They are fiddly to make but fun!
Congratulations! Definitely fiddly, so they aren't my favorite thing to make, but I am SO happy to know how! It's a great project to have in your arsenal.
I'm in Australia and l have a sock monkey made by my mother. Everyone says its the ugliest thing they've ever seen. Maybe I should retrieve it from the Donations box in the garage?
I would! I don't think they were ever popular for being cute. I think the kitsch is the charm. But more than appearances, it's always nice to have things made by mom! ❤
Monkey is best craft. :-) Thanks a million for Benji Buttons Monkey. He's loving his new home and all his monkey brothers.
That's why he was misbehaving here! He needed monkey friends!

Hi Max! I'm so happy you found it helpful. I don't find nearly enough excuses for history dives.
I really Really enjoyed this one. Thank you, for making my day brighter.
Yay! I'm so glad! I'm always on the lookout for when projects have a story.

fascinating history and adorable monkey!
I love the monkey business! I hope he’s just as mischievous at his new home
He's got other monkey friends now to help him let off steam! 🤣

Thank you so much for this! I like hearing about the history of things I like, and this was a fun and interesting video!
