I read a blog post once that says there are about 300,000 items in the average American home (LA Times). Whether the number is true or not, I think the point the author was trying to make was that the average person has too much stuff - more than what he or she needs.
I know for sure I was one of those people. But I never realized how much money, time, physical and emotional energy have gone to these things. And looking back, I think I could have done perfectly okay with just the essentials instead of too much stuff.
So in today’s video, I would like to share these things I learned after living as a minimalist and how it changes not just my home and finances but also every aspect of my life.
    1. Prioritizing quality over quantity
I had this idea that minimalism was a numbers game. That to be a true minimalist, I needed to set a specific number of things I owned and stick to that.
But instead of focusing on quantity, I prioritize quality. The whole point for me is that everything I own adds value and does not clutter my life.
The quality over quantity mindset also applies to my daily schedule. It's no longer about cramming so many tasks like I used to do. Rather it's about practicing intentionality to figure out what deserves to be in my to don't list, so I can free up time and space for what truly matters.
    2. Maintaining authenticity
I used to rely on mainstream media for inspiration on clothes, home decor, and many other things. But I was choosing a style that looked nice on someone and not exactly comfortable for me.
Slowing down helps me to identify my personal style that resonates with me. It's okay to get ideas from others as long as we don't lose our authenticity.
I built my capsule wardrobe based on the style that works for me and decorate my home based on what suits my budget.
    3. It's lighter - literally and figuratively
From traveling to moving to tidying up, having only the essentials in my life lighten my load. When I got rid of old things from my past that don't hold value to me, I also got rid of the emotional weight they carried.
Plus I don't ever need to pay for excess baggage when we travel, or rent storage spaces when we need to move, or rent a bigger home to make room for lots of stuff. I'm appreciating the mobility and affordability of a minimalist lifestyle.
    4. Quitting the comparison trap
I must confess - I used to envy content creators that showed nice things in their videos. Cooking channels with beautiful crockery and kitchen, slow living channels with photogenic furniture, and so many other things.
I could choose to buy what they have but I also realize that envy has no end. My purchases can give me temporary happiness but I know I will soon find more reasons to envy others and feel bad all over again.
So instead of feeding that emotion, I focus on being authentic and grateful for who I am and what I have. Gratitude helps us realize we are - and we have - enough. Just understanding that, there’s nothing to be envious or feel deprived of, don’t you think?
    5. Decluttering emotional baggage
Along with discarding physical things that no longer serve me, I have been working through old habits and tendencies that keep me stuck in the past. We often cling onto old thought patterns, habits and ideologies because it’s what’s familiar and the unknown is intimidating
It’s going to be an on-going process of sorting and decluttering emotional baggage. But it does make for a lighter journey in life.
As the saying goes, “You can't reach for anything new if your hands are still full of yesterday's junk."

Now if I could just find a partner that has this mindset. :) Was it hard to find someone that is in agreement to this lifestyle?

Thats true - it would be a lot easier to be with someone whom you share similar values with. 😊
In the case of my husband and I, we both transitioned to this lifestyle together. I'm sure there's someone out there who has the same lifestyle as you, in one way or another. 😊
