  • In this episode of Something To Wrestle, Bruce and Conrad discuss the 30+ year career of the tag team best known as The Bushwhackers! Bruce takes us back to his first meeting with Luke and Butch, the origins of the gimmick, and some of their most memorable matches. We’re going back in time to learn all about the wacky team that once upon a time...was anything but cartoony.

I’ve been a wrestling fan for 30+ years (probably like most of you) and the Bushwackers will be one of the first things I show my kids to get them hooked on wrestling too. That is their legacy. Great episode.

In reference to the WM5 tag team match. You would think that a "wrestling historian" like Meltzer would understand, that not every match is meant to be a classic. Not every match needs to be balls to the wall. Sure the match was bad, it wasn't meant to be Midnight vs Rock N Roll.

Hey Conrad, the “Hongi” your referring to isn’t a gimmick , but it is actually a traditional native Māori greeting in New Zealand . Its pretty cool that Luke and Butch took our small greeting to the world of wrestling.

Great biographical look at the Bushwhackers. They have might been a comedic team but hell they made a 8 year run out of it which is incredible. My favorite memories were when they embrassed managers like The Genesis and Jimmy Hart.

Great Episode. However remember that the Bushwhackers are New Zealanders not Australians. It's like calling Canadians "Americans" or vice-versa. I used to own an Authentic Bushwhackers Cap. In 1989 it was my Freshman year and my roommate was dating Butch Miller's daughter. During the 1980s it was difficult to get any WWF merchandise here in Wellington, New Zealand and so I was pleased when my roommate got me a cap. At the time my Dad was the main Bushwhackers fan in my family, so I gave him the cap for his birthday.

What a good question regarding if it was ever considered to revert back to their old style. Knowing how the Attitude Era went, had they even stayed that long, I can totally picture them getting screwed over by the New Age Outlaws only to see them revert back to their old hardcore violent style. The Outlaws could've worked with a babyface violent Bushwhackers version just like they did with Cactus Jack and Terry Funk in Chainsaw Charlie character. Also, I wouldn't have minded seeing them revert back to their Sheepherder style to fit in with the WWF Attitude Era.

That old bingo hall is treasured by both workers and fans alike. And if you grew up in that Northeastern area and were an aspiring young wrestler, finding yourself working at ECW would be just as motivating as the Omni back in Arn's day. Bruce's predisposition against ECW doesn't serve him here as he's wrong in not adding it to that list.

The moment which Conrad is referring to at 54:44 really put me in a strange place when I saw it. I didn't really see it as a "hilarious rib", as Conrad describes. I have zero problem with homosexuality, but it felt like more than a "check" and had my mentality of professional wrestlers very twisted at the time. I can understand a "sack tap" or a deliberate ball shot to be an asshole, but this was like a full grab with a circular rub with the palm, a grope, something that looked like enjoyment was a thing. Just so fucking weird 🤔

About an hour 23 Bruce talks about everyone talking about slipping on a banana peel but never actually seeing it happen. Reminds me of when I was at school, stuck in side on a rainy day. Teacher telling me to concentrate as I'm easily distracted. Halfway through that sentence class mate walks past the front of the class slips on a banana peel. I'm in tears laughing as it looked like a cartoon and I'd never seen that before. Teacher "See my point", me "He slipped on a banana and fell on his ass".
