    The Jolly Tars were a performance troup from the 40s and 50s who used to perform for tourists at the prom end of Victoria Road (where Kiddy Corner used to be). Also, the Tramway pub used to be a Safeway supermarket before the big Morrisons opened further out Victoria Road.

    When my parents moved to the area (10 years ago), there were 7 banks in that very same area!
    There are now 3 left!
    Banks leaving areas equates only too a place declining rapidly and the money becoming non existent!
    Cleveleys thrived when Tesco's was there but as that moved on the high street grew quieter.
    Along with Wilko's now another vacant building- it has now become a shadow of it's former self.
    Really sad to see.

    Cleveleys is affectionately known as "God's waiting-room" at work.
    That's a really good Launderette at 5:35. I use it to wash my Down Jackets and synthetic duvets in the large washing-machines and large Tumble Dryers.
    The sad thing is that its cheaper to buy a new synthetic duvet and throw away the old duvet than it is to wash and tumble-dry the old duvet. 😔😔

    • @PlasticGirl65
      @PlasticGirl65 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Duvets are like printers, it's cheaper to throw away your printer when the ink runs out and buy a new printer because it's cheaper than new ink.

    Victoria Sq where the tram tracks and traffic lights are used to be a big roundabout with the trams going through the middle. I think they changed the layout in the 1970s. I used to get the tram every Saturday with mates to Derby Baths for 6 old pennies in the 60s! BTW, the posh bit is Thornton, which isinthe Doomsday Book and we have a better windmill than either Blackpool or Lytham!

      Good Stephen. I keep pestering you to go to Thornton. Here's a good opportunity. Yes, Marsh Mill, the remnants of the old railway station, Baines Endowed connected to Baines in Poulton, the Riverside down Stannah where the Archimedes screw is. Housing estates where ICI used to be, the rail track to Fleetwood,

    Many happy memories from visiting my Grandparents who lived there from the mid 70’s to late 80’s. I visit a couple of times of year and it amazes me how many shops are still there that were there back in the day. Fave place - The Royal British Legion. Used to love going in there with my Grandad. Love your blogs, Cheers 🍻

    Thanks for the video, yes victoria rd east you were on, and i like the fact no trees as that way the pavement doesnt get lifted by the roots, and the drains dont get blocked by leaves etc that comes off them, i do like trees in parks anx forests though, and love the fall my favorite time of year.
    And thanks for pointing out the laundrette as wondering where ine was, for when my washing machine packs up !! Its good cleveleys is quieter, than blackpool, you have the choice of a banging night out in blackpool and a quieter one in cleveleys 😊

    Hi Stephen, Thank you for the vlog, the Jolly Jack Tar, a widespread image of the common British sailor, beginning with the formal establishment of Royal Navy in 1660 and ending in 1817 .

  • @uk-martin4905
    @uk-martin4905 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think you'll find the reason there are no trees in Cleveleys is the same reason there are no trees close to the sea in Blackpool. Trees would not survive the salt-laden wind blowing straight up Victoria Road from the seafront. It makes Cleveleys look rather grim unfortunately.
    You are correct about the former Royal Bank of Scotland building at Victoria Square.

    A Jolly Tar is/was a popular nickname for sailor in the Royal Navy. It features in the chorus of the song "Heart of Oak" - ". . . heart of oak are our ships; jolly tars are our men . . ." The music was written in1759 for the London stage by William Boyce; lyrics by David Garrick. Nowadays it's the official march of the Royal Navy. Wetherspoons has a habit of naming its pubs after local celebrities though, so kevinholmes9716 suggestion sounds right to me?

Large looking and wonderful built place. These days makes me wonder how so many can stay open ! Those that are still open must be lucky 🍀 ones. That wide road certainly be complimented by planting. Many trees. Saying that. £ Signs come to mind ……. ! Hummmmmm. Love. KFC. Cannot imagine it banging in Cleveleys but maybe I’m wrong. Thoroughly enjoyed this video Stephen, as always do all of them, and also absolutely. Love your brilliant natural sense of fine humour !!!! Smirking back here. Have a relaxing weekend. Enjoy ! I used to go in the Vic with mum,my mate Mike, sis, and brother in law, when they came to visit. A Thursday evening was packed as it was quiz night they even let customers take their dogs in, but since all the manic rules, came in, that all stopped along with no mobile phones, no texting, not even answering your mobile, no internet searching,no music, no reading of newspapers. Mum's no longer here now but when sis and brother in law last went in they said:"It was dead." I'm not in the least bit surprised with all those rules, that's like a dictatorship, people being told what they can and can't do we're not living in China or Russia.

      Ridiculous, sis told me that she went in the Bispham, with her husband, in the summer, and the same rules there. Who the hell is implementing these rules don't they realise we're living in the "21st Century" NOT the 19th. We live in a technological age even my great niece who's only 8 has a tablet.@@AWalkontheWildSideBlackpool

    Hi Steve. Great post as always, pal. Glad you didn't film from central Blackpool today - my in-law's are staying there and if my M.O.L's been on the Scotch, you wouldn't have been safe roaming the streets and nor would any bugger else tbh. Last time it was like an out-take from The Exorcist. That said if you had bumped into her (or she'd bumped into you more likely) it would have made good footage for W.O.T.W.S 😂.
