I wish I didn't hear that about 'Road To El Dorado', because I love that movie - I bought it as soon it came to DVD and watched 'n' laughed to it so many times... it has not aged yet. Though I'm glad it became a favorite later on. To me, RTED is up there with The Emperors New Groove = both being Adventure movies :)

I feel the same, this was the golden age Dreamworks animation, it really breaks my heart to know they had such great expectations for it and then the movie bombed. Can you even imagine Tulie, Miguel and Chel going on an adventure on mythical cities in Asia or Africa.

There's an entire Croods 2 we didn't get before we got A New Age since the Chris Sanders draft got canned from when the company purchase occured, I'd gotten to interview a guy who worked on it and its rather interesting, considering we have animation tests, some storyboards and names/plots of scrapped characters who'd become The Bettermans.

    • @SonicXtreme99akaCreeperMario
      @SonicXtreme99akaCreeperMario 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

What was the croods 2 originally about? I presume the ice age?

    • @Wolf-Chalk
      @Wolf-Chalk 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

@@SonicXtreme99akaCreeperMario No, I'll get the interview i had done with Ryan Savas:
Me: I know the father of the pre!Bettermans was named Duuug, do you remember what his wife and daughter were named and what they were like? I noticed there seemed to be a little boy alongside Sandy, did they have a deleted son who was going to be Sandy's friend, did he have a name? Were there other human characters planned besides the two families? Were the Glouses cave people or modern humans like Guy, Duug and his family look pretty cave people-like with their get up and Duuug's design. Speaking of Guy, was he related/linked to these people at all like he is the Bettermans in the final draft?
Ryan Savas: The Gronses were Duuug. Wife was Candi. Daughter was Coco but later renamed Raven. The boy was Roland. He was Sandy's age. They were modern humans like guy. More like the Flintstones. Guy was not related to them in early drafts. There was a first draft that had other humans but they were cut out of the next draft so it was just the two families.
Me: What was the overall conflict in this draft of Croods 2 that had Duuug and the Glouses? Was it the same as A New Age? Did the Glouses live with other people like in a village, it seems like in some of the concept art you did depicts other people that are neither the Glouses or Croods. Did Eep and Guy go through the character arcs they did in A New Age too? Was there a love triangle still with the Glouses' daughter, do you know how that affected Eep, Guy and her?
Ryan Savas: The early had the Croods finding a home and then immediately the Gronses big tree house washed up on shore after a stop blocking Grugs view of the ocean. Most of the movie was wacky Grug vs Duuug comedy. They men eventually got trapped in a cave and were being held captive by a big Kong like creature named Momo. The wives and kids ended up rescuing them. There was no love triangle but Thunk did have a crush on Raven.
Me: Do you know what inspired the art style change for Croods 1 leading into Croods 2? [The more semi realism with all the textures vs the more exaggerated cartoony style of A New Age, was this change always intended?]
I think it was a conscious decision to get away from realistic textures like skin pores and sunburned skin. It makes for a more appealing looking character.
Me: Were there other Croodimals planned as filler species or major characters that didn't make the cut?
Ryan Savas: Duuug had a land shark who I think was named Jason. Candi also had a big furry cat at one point.
Me:. This might sound silly but were the pets seen at the end of Croods 1 in the old draft of Croods 2, like the red owlbear and white lioyte Nippers? Or were they always never there? This has been a nagging thought in my head for a while of all things.
Ryan Savas: I don't remember them being in Croods 2
Me: This is a Croods 1 question but was Guy always the same the entire draft? He had a ton of concept art that seemed so different, as well as even a different name [Wimmit], did any other characters get name changes like Guy did? Were any of them as characters completely different to what we have now? This is also a kinda dumb question but did Guy ever get a last name in any of the drafts for either movie?
Ryan Savas: When Guy was named Wimmet he was much crazier character and not the smart guy he became. The years of being alone made him very kooky. The name Wimmet was changed because people watching the movie kept hearing 'women'. He never had a last name. He's the only character that went through a major change like that in Croods 1.
Me: Do you know if Chris Sanders was happy with the final result of A New Age? Did you ever work with him?
Ryan Savas: I don't know if Chris liked A New Age. I think he probably consulted on it even when he wasn't directing. I worked with Chris and Kirk on Croods 1 and their version of Croods 2. When their version of the movie was shelved I went on to another project, Larrikins. That project was also shelved.
Me: Another question concerning Croods 1, did you work on the project when it was "Crood Awakening" where it had the Bogs, as well as Winmit and Grug in a tribe? If so, do you know anything what this entailed? Also did characters like Guy and Eep [or any of them besides Thunk who is 9] have specific ages set/or in mind in the first film?
Ryan Savas: I remember that version but I didn't work on it. The Bogs were long gone by the time I started on the movie. I started on the movie around 2010.
Me: Did the draft of the Croods 2 you work on involve Ugga as a more major character? I heard the theme of motherhood was going to be explored in an interview somewhere.
Ryan Savas: Ugga was a major character. Ultimately it was the moms who saved the day when the Duuug and Grug got in trouble. There used to be a scene where Gran saved everyone from a big panther and ended up dying in the fight. It didn't fit tonally in the movie and they quickly decided to keep her alive.
Me: Did the Croods live somewhere else or were they traveling when they met the Glouses? I always wondered what happened to the beach they were living at at the end of Croods 1.
Ryan Savas: The Croods found a new ocean front house to live at the beginning of the movie. Later there was a big storm and the Gronses tree house washed up on shore, blocking Grugs view.
Me: What was the relationship between Eep/Glouse daughter, Ugga/Glouse wife, and Grug/Duuug like? Did they end on a good note?
Ryan Savas: Ugga felt very much inferior to Candi and her perfection. Eep and Raven got along well. Duuug and Grug were constantly in competition. I think it was similar to what they ended up with in A New Age.
Me: What was the deity bear like and why does it take Guy specifically? Was it the villain like the spiny mandrilla in A New Age? Who were some of those animals in the concept art such as the ape walkng with Guy? Were the Punch Monkeys still planned to be who served the bear?
Ryan Savas: I think the bear you're referring to was Momo. He took Guy and used him like a toy doll. They had a Fay Wray/King Kong relationship. Yes, it eventually became the mandrilla. The punch monkeys were also in old versions. Before the punch monkeys there were little creatures called Wah-wahs.
Me: Do you know if Guy and Eep got married, either in the old draft or A New Age?
Ryan Savas: I seem to remember an old idea of them getting married and going on a honeymoon but I don't think it ever made it into a script.
Me: Are there any cool specifics you remember the most from old drafts of Croods 1 or Croods 2, maybe some deleted scenes or characters perhaps? You storyboarded a different scenario with the shoe scene and an alternative ending, were there any other endings that got scrapped for Croods 1? Were there any other scenes you had storyboarded or are they lost to time for both films?
Ryan Savas: There were so many. We threw away so much good stuff. They gave me most of the Duuug and Grug comedy beats. The early man cave stuff was some of my favorite. There was a scene with them stuck in a cave which was fun. As far as endings for Croods 1, it was once bookended with scenes that took place in modern times in a museum with a bunch of kids on a field trip learning about the separating of the continents and cavepeople. I did one version of the ending to that.
Me: How far along was the draft of Croods 2 you worked on before it got the can? Do you know why this version didn't make the cut? Do you think the script for this draft might surface one-day?
Ryan Savas: It had several drafts and we did a few screenings. The reasons it was stopped were largely political. Dreamworks was bought by Comcast/Universal and they shelved a bunch of projects in development. Jeffrey Katzenberg left. New people came in. Chris and Kirk both left Dreamworks . After the dust settled they brought back Croods 2 as well as Puss in Boots 2.
Me: Speaking of drafts, I remember Joel Crawford mentioning there was a cut version of where Guy's parents were the second family they found instead of the Bettermans. Did you happen to know anything about that version and what it entailed? Did they have names or designs started?
Ryan Savas: No, I don't recall. The idea was thrown around that the Gronses could be Guy's parents but it never stuck.
My Tumblr compiles a lot of deleted Croods 1 and 2 content bc its one of my favorite movies so I was always curious about the Croods 2 we never got. So I had reached out to a storyboarder who'd worked on it and was so excited he let me interview him. But this was what he asnsered for me if anyone was curious.

I could conceive of a lot of ideas that could come out of a ‘Road to...’ series and all the various exotic worlds that Miguel, Tulio, Chelsea and Altivo could be the first to discover, like the Galapagos Islands or Easter Island! (Of course, a big part of how well that series could work out would be largely contingent on whether Kevin Kline and Kenneth Branagh would be willing to return, since their dynamic was so key to making Tulio and Miguel work as a comedic pairing!)

No, it means the audience doesn't get it. The sad thing about the majority of people is that we have a nasty tendency to focus on the negative over the positive, and overprotective parents probably saw the more "mature" content of the movie and thought it wasn't worth putting money into. Even to this day, there are people accusing the movie of racism.

When they brought Spirit back I thought that meant there was a chance they would bring back Road to El Dorado it hasn't happened yet but I still think it would be a good idea for a DreamWorks to bring it back perhaps as one of its Netflix shows and they should do that format that they were planning as a show instead of the movie series where it has the trio ending up in a different country and finding a different mythical city. Like every season would be a different city and a different country maybe they can work in some mysticism and fantasy in like they did with tzekel-kan taking control of the stone Jaguar. Some of the places off the top of my head would be Atlantis, Shangri-La.

Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio originally pitched a completely different version of Sinbad:Legend of the Seven Seas. In their version, Sinbad was an apprentice map-maker, Proteus was captain of the guard, and Marina’s name was Roxanne. There was going to be another Goddess named Janis, and she and Eris would’ve made a bet with each other. Not only that, but the Book of Peace was originally going to be called the Book of Fates, and it would’ve decided who the next ruler of Syracuse would be. Roxanne/Marina would’ve fallen in love with Proteus shortly after meeting him. There was also going to be a love triangle involving Sinbad, Proteus, and Roxanne/Marina.

Aside from canceling the Chris Farley Shrek film for obvious reasons, it looks like somebody at dreamworks who were canceling these projects were not confident in how they were being made or they thought kids wouldn’t find these movies fun, when really they’re leaving some potentially good story’s to tell the audience, like “me and my shadow” looked so fun and I would’ve love to know how it would turn out

The IMAX version of Sam Mendes’ 1917 (a live action DreamWorks film) is lost.
All home video releases so far have been the standard CinemaScope version.
Sam Mendes’ previous Skyfall had the IMAX version air on Russian TV, and the same goes for cinematographer Roger Deakins’ Blade Runner 2049 (directed by Denis Villeneuve).

Spirit Untamed was a load of horse shit and a slap in the face to the OG and horse fans alike. If they treated Spirit like this, then I don't want them to ever bring back El Dorado or Sinbad. They spat in the eye of the horse girls and they'll only spit in the eyes of adventurers as well.

Such a shame the Road to El Dorado failed at the box office because I really loved that movie since my childhood and I was one of few to have seen it in theaters. It really shocked me that it flopped because it had everything to love: beautiful environments, well-written characters, good story, catchy song (it's tough to be a god), and the smoken hot animated piece of ass, Chel.
Hell I would loved to have seen sequels (even if they're direct to videos) or as a TV series on Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, or Fox Saturday Morning Cartoon Program during my childhood. As much as I would love that to happen, it's probably best not to let it happen considering how much DreamWorks has fallen downhill as a company and their parent company, Universal are a bit of @$$holes (and I thought Disney was bad).
It's probably going to be 3D animated instead of 2D, hamfist some annoying pop & rap music, and most likely either tone down or remove Chel because of Woke Culture which will not be in the same core magic that made the animated cult classic great in the 1st place.

The fact that they overlooked Me and My Shadow for Peabody and Sherman it's kind of funny to me because Me and My Shadow seems more interesting than Peabody and Sherman and I know a lot of people who know about the film and would love to see it and from what I can tell the overall reception for a Peabody and Sherman is it's one of DreamWorks worst movies

After the disappointment known as "Spirit Untamed", I don't know if I should still hope for any "El Dorado" sequels or spin-offs anytime soon.
That being said, I'd love to see how the trio rebelling against Cuba's sugar plantations, returning to Spain, becoming rich from Altivo's golden horseshoes, how Chel would be treated by the Spainards, along with her and Tulio having kids (admit it-the thought of Miguel being called "Tio" is heart-warming). For all we know, a sequel could be Dreamwork's answer to "Encanto". And maybe bring back 2D animation if we're lucky (I still wish a Jesus movie was made.)
