Thanks for this - in a way I wish we kept the gaelic script for them - they looked so much prettier and easier to read than all the "h"s. You have a clear and concise style - keep making these videos.
Im learning Irish in America, with different resources. The lenition had be hung up for a while, because i don't know all of the rules as to why it is used. This video helps me alot. I never thought about the air flow thing. Ill be able to recognize that as i listen to irish every day 😊
Thank you for this link, now I actually get the logic! They turn into fricatives with the h and the fricatives f and s become silent/h. It's like a piece of the puzzle clicked, omg this is actually logical!
Great video! Exactly what I was looking for. A simple explanation for why lenition exists! I see that it's because it makes the language flow better because you don't have to have a gap between the pronunciation of the consonants.

My bad memory from schooldays was that a séimhiú was the dot over the consonant which was an alternative to the 'h'. So, the 'h' is ALSO a séimhiú, no?
Yous in the Cló Gaelach (Gaelic Script) this is how it was written. Same thing, just represented by a h now! In a way it's actually easier to read the dot because then people don't try pronounce both the letter and the h...
