LIRR train

  • The crew on this train was very nice and allowed me to stand behind the cab and capture this ride. You’ll get to see a lot of the automatic position light signals on this branch. Stations, interlockings, and passing trains are identified in addition to some of the automatic signal numbers. Very quaint branch that for now, like a part of the Montauk Branch, is mostly double track with automatic block signals.

You brought back a very "pleasant" memory from more than 50 years ago. Before we were married, my late wife and I went to visit my sister in Bayville. We took the LIRR from Jamaica to Oyster Bay. The only smoker on the train was an ancient car numbered 13. No a/c and the windows didn't open. But we needed the smoker bad. Since stopped smoking. Keep up the good work. Bob from Santa Barbara

Thanks!!! That was my favorite branch to run. Although I loved running GP-38's with power packs or MP-15's at the rear, the 'new" stuff was OK. That's the branch I broke in the 422 when new before it was put into regular service. The changes on the main line from Mineola to Floral Park was interesting. I plan to visit LI in the fall, looking forward to riding to Grand Central.

@@3985uprr wow! I look forward to seeing that video. I have a few interesting stories that happened to me on that branch. Quickly one was when the new engines arrived, they had a problem of losing computer connection to the throttle. Here I am going east from Albertson station. And no response from the throttle. Had to completely shut the engine down to reset the computers. That was an eerie feeling sitting there with no engine running, taking instructions from 204.

This brings back a lot of memories for my self as well. I remember getting to ride on those engines. The gp38 ,I think f7 and alcos and mp15s. Those days were awesome when engineers allowed us to ride up front. Truly miss it. I did get to ride in the dm’s as well. Truly miss it. I also miss the p72 cars.

Love this video of one of my favorite branches. In Nassau County no less, no electrification for most of the line (and what little there is seems odd), a deer almost running across the tracks, an abandoned station at Mill Neck that is architecturally one of my favorites, and an air of Theodore Roosevelt a century after he died. Also the first LIRR branch not my home Port Jefferson line that I rode on my own at age 16. So thanks for posting. (Got one of Greenport to Ronkonkoma?)

I've heard that this branch was supposed to be electrified with a third rail way back then, but that never happened. I hope to see it included in the MTA's 2025-2044 20-Year Needs Assessment.

    • @prchristman
      @prchristman ปีที่แล้ว

@@williamyoon7660 I have read that money was the reason the branch wasn't electrified beyond East Williston. Paraphrasing a site that I see is no longer available, the cost to electrify the entire Oyster Bay Branch was estimated in 1941 to be $1,620,000. The LIRR operated at an estimated $1,336,000 deficit in 1940.

Wow. I'm watching this from the UK, and I'm surprised that there are routes on this busy railway that still are not electrified in the 21st century. Everyone says the LI Railway is the busiest system in North America. Why have they not yet electrified the trackage? Especially in our time of climate change, would not electrical trains use cleaner energy? I am curious.

Comparing this to my experience on SEPTA (especially the trunk line between Center City and Jenkintown/Glenside/Lansdale), this seem to be running very slowly, even on the Main Line west of Mineola.
What would you say is the primary limiting factor?
Poor diesel acceleration compared to EMUs?
    Excessive curvature?
    Stop frequency?
    Track condition?
    Or is it something else?

Good Morning Tim!! I just wanted to tell you that this is only my opinion. You are allowed to disagree with me, but the train crew on this particular train I think did a horrible job on making an announcement as your train was pulling into Mineola. I think that what the crew should have said was this: "Mineola station, Mineola. This is a westbound train to Jamaica, and Jamaica will be the next and final stop. Please change at Jamaica for all western terminals such as: Penn Station, Atlantic Terminal, Grand Central Madison or the Airtrain to JFK Airport." However, that is not what the train crew had said. I think that it is absolutely ridiculous that people should have to change at Mineola when they could take the westbound express train to Jamaica from Mineola. I mean the local trains sometimes make Main Line local stops like at Merillon Avenue and New Hyde Park. People who are in a hurry to get to the city should remain on westbound trains from Oyster Bay in Mineola because they run express to Jamaica. The ride is only 10 minutes from Mineola to Jamaica. Again, Tim this is my opinion but you are allowed to disagree with me if you please. I would love to hear your opinion. Please message me back and have a wonderful day my friend!! Take Care!!

We advise the pax to change for GCM at Mineola because we often get delayed coming into Jamaica due to the ongoing trackwork so there is no hope of catching the leading train and we sometimes get held out so we arrive nearly at the same time as the following train requiring a sprint to catch the train (which is right behind us at Mineola).
