    So, now Kirsten has won the GGR. That's a huge testament to the seaworthiness of the Cape George design, so we need to congratulate you for such a wise purchase as well as Kirsten (we need to give a bit of credit to Kirsten. I'm only kidding, of course. She. not only won the race, she also took a long side trip to rescue another contestant whose boat had sunk. So Kirsten and Cape George yachts are now legendary. Oh, by the way, all your work your Cape George earn you a better return some day,

    Those bronze cockpit drains with the balls - often on older boats that sit low in the waterwith the leeward cockpit drains will be below sea level when heeled over. So when this happens, the ball rises up in the drain and seals the water from coming into the the cockpit. The drain hoses from these drain should be cross led so the starboard hose goes to the port thruhull and visa versa.

    • @philgray3443
      @philgray3443 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did wonder about keeping water out of a capsized cockpit. Ours are glassed tubes, but I wish we had balls in them because a passing wave usually makes water come up the drain.

    • @braithmiller
      @braithmiller ปีที่แล้ว

    • @davidbrown8365
      @davidbrown8365 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Exactly! Was gonna say they are anti back-splash / surge valves. Day to day problem. Not for a capsise....

    • @jwwebnaut7045
      @jwwebnaut7045 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      With crossed drains these balls are superfluous. Besides they greatly reduce the outflow which can be serious when pooped.
      A tip (maybe off topic): If wintering and the water freezes, these pipes can burst. I used to insert Willow twigs which are compressible.

    • @rl3898
      @rl3898 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jwwebnaut7045 That is not correct, with following seas there will be water up the drains without the ball traps even with crossed drains. Been there done that, and there's nothing more nerve racking than water coming in the cockpit, repeatedly for hour after hour in big following seas.

    Mya, speaking as someone who has a history of back problems starting from the age of 18, please take care of that back. I used to blow it off when I was younger because I could recover in a day or two, but now that I'm approaching 50, it can take anywhere from 3 to 7 days for me to even be able to walk any appreciable distance, and can take months to fully recover.I attribute this to my earlier nonchalance about the problem. If I had begun serious physical therapy at an earlier age, I could have avoided the vast majority (all?) of these problems.

      It's always good to have a plan B, just in case. You know, what do we do if things fall apart?
      I would suggest that you store all of your new appliances that you are not going to install this season back at your parents house instead of storing it there. And anything else that is just going to take up space there. That way Visa problems won't apply.
      I'm sure that you already have a plan B. If not, at least write something down to reference later.
      You both are very intelligent and I am probably just preaching to the choir .

    These may not be as flashy as painting large areas, redoing whole sections, or ripping out bulkheads, but these little repairs still keep the project going. Funnily enough, I did some work in my Club’s boatshop last week, and suddenly both of the sailing TH-camrs I watch (You and Florence) upload repair videos. Granted, you guys normally have been uploading refit videos, but it still felt a little bit intertwined.

    BTW as an ex Navy sailor we always added "Azure Blue" to our white paints. White paint inevitably goes to a cream colour as it ages, Azure Blue tint only just makes the White just notably bluish and as it ages goes white and as expected the older the paint will go to cream colour, regards.

    When using a plug to mold a hole, wrap with nylon string or rope. Depending on clearance desired. Wrap it tight together and finish with the string or rope at the top. Then cover with tape or wax paper. Once your lay up is cured, pull the string out. Then you can pull your plug easily.

    I have those fans for our boat. You should also take a look at Vornado energy smart fans. They are AC-powered fans (although the energy smart actually convert to 24v, so it might be hackable) and move a max 1000cfm of air for a max 40w consumption. We keep these for hot nights and run them all night pretty easily on our house batteries.
    I plan to take one apart to see if I can hack it to run off 12v with a step-up to 24v. Our boat has a bus bar that centralizes all the cabin fan runs, so we could buy a single 12v to 24v step up and not have to change any wiring if we ever went that route. And since 24v can move more current through the same awg wire, won't have to worry about doubling the wattage of the fans.

    Sorry Aladino,
    but the ball in the drain valve isn't there to close it if you capsize the boat, it's to prevent water from entering in the swell. In other words: water can only run OUT of the cockpit and not enter from below. The valves thus act as a one-way valve since the ball will float up and thereby close the valve. A very imaginative construction that you should definitely get!

    Hi Aledino, the balls in the cockpit drains are primarily meant to prevent the cockpit from flooding by following waves. This happens a lot when the cockpit floor is just a small distance above the waterline. Quite annoying to have a wet floor at all times when sailing. Inflow of water into the cockpit when capsized is least of your problems since gravity will drain that through the open top!

    No wonder you were having an uphill run the last couple of weeks! Having had my own problem with a twitchy back, you have my unbridled sympathies. Also, watching you guys climb the learning curves is a GREAT help!

    Another really good episode! That dutchman repair is well done and is probably stronger than the rest of the cabin sides. Your knocking it out one (or more) jobs at a time! The splash is closer than you think!

    What a great video Maya. I continue to feel so happy for you. 😊 (P.s. that shade of red on your flannel jacket looks fabulous on you when you're tired, just the right power colour can give you a little energy, and not seem so tired, eh? )...Back to more serious things on my mind tonight: 1.) I just wanted to acknowledge how tough this job is, and give you and Dino kudos along with virtual hugs. 💜 Like any remodel, it can suck you dry emotionally and physically. (My partner and I have done our fair share over the years, and currently still doing the fishing boat, and our little cabin...it can really test a person!) 2.) I don't want to talk badly about anyone, but I wanted to tell you that I'm glad you kept the name of the brokerage on your initial videos. We have had personal experience with them, and they have a reputation for not exactly being ethical, etc. I'm so, so sorry this purchase was such a mess. I really am. 😢 If we could help in some way, I wish we could.
    And finally number 3.) We want to purchase a few similar fans, but want to make sure you get credit/points/commission. Do I just go to the link posted? Or is there something else Im overlooking? 😊
    Thanks Maya. Both of you hang in there. It will get better. Unfortunately, it takes time and patience. Hugs from afar. 🌲💚🌲

    Hey Aladino, my thoughts about the "balls": the balls density is slightly lower than surrounding water so they will leave through water from top but swim on top and lock the drains when water should ingress from outside due to seastate or speed of the boat, that creates suction at the stern. I can't imagine why water should not get in when 180° capsized?!😉 You both do a great job! Björn

    Glad things are progressing. Have you thought of putting a couple of dingy supports on the cabin top to stabilize it when it's on the boat? That would support it when strapped down and give you a guide to put it in the "best" position every time.

    Aladino: I am profoundly impressed with your resolution of problematic issues and your skill in execution. As I have commented before, your sailing dinghy is a work of art. My concerns are what will be the issue in 30 knots of wind againt a 3 knot current and significant amounts of H2O over the bow of the boat and in an emergency, your ability to safely go forward. Will you have access to sturdy tether clip on points and jack lines?? Just a thought! As you know, safety and unexpected emergency resolution are vitally important in blue water transits. You and Maya have forged a beautiful working relationship and are a joy to share. John K

    Its probably too late by the time you read this but it seemed like a good idea to me. Before glassing the cabin top why not build up a slightly raised strip that forms a base prior to attaching the wood hatch surround. It could be a 1/2 inch that would be glassed in as part of the cabin top on the surface only in that small area that would be the mounting point for the wood. That way rather than the water on the flat deck tending to run under the wood (as apparently happened before) there would be more of a chance the water would shed and not seek to penetrate the seam.

    The ball in the cockpit floor drain should float so it will not close the hole when capsizing. It should however prevent water from rising up when healing by making the drain "one way".
