If vertical storage is good enough for most lumber yards, it's probably good enough for most shops.
And if it's good enough for sheet materials...
What I do is: rotate my vertical stored lumber just to help keep it from warping and it works well for me.

You need a label on that that says "I'm a lumber rack, and I'm OK"
I use the same concept for the wood rack I built 20 years ago. Mine is a bit clunky though. Lots of 2x4's. Yours is more elegant. I like it. Thanks for sharing.
I bet one of those conveyors like they have at the dry cleaners would work. You just press a button and the boards rotate around until the one you want is there.

Thanks for touching on the warping bit! I've always heard wood is "all but guaranteed to warp" if not stored flat. Makes sense, especially for storage of what you are about to use soon.
Thank heaven you leveled the base, you'd have had a wood revolution with that slight incline. You leave them anything to complain about, especially that northern maple, and they'll be bringing in a union.

@4:25 that's how I store my lumber for the last 18 months and also have a 2 inch platform and have not seen any warping cupping w.e. have ya. My room also has a consistent 40% humidity level but much better for space and grab n go miss ur project vids

I first saw vertical lumber storage in Tokyo more than 50 years ago. A hardwood dealer had his entire inventory in a space no larger than a noodle shop, maybe 16' wide. Here in semi-desert I acclimate project materials for a few weeks on end before sawing. By broadening the bottom standoff from vertical, a stack of boards can be spaced with a gap between them all except where they touch at the top. By making the bays fairly narrow almost no load impinges on the outlookers. 3/4" EMT conduit is way stronger than necessary. By grinding a spade bit to near the conduit's outer diameter and angling the holes so it rises above horizontal, satisfactory and safe storage can be built for fewer $$.
For people worried about the warping part you can always put some threaded rod in between with holes drilled in angle iron with a wood backer and some wing nuts. That's a very nice idea and convenient.

I do vertical storage but I used styrofoam on the bottom to prevent wicking. Moisture will not wick through it and the wood stays dry. and undamaged because the styrofoam is soft enough to allow some dropping of the wood. Mine is closer to the doors and rain and wind attempt to take a toll on the wood but using the styrofoam saves a lot of headaches. It's easy to wipe off and keep the moisture out.
Not that I was 'not' going to leave a like to begin with... but the Duggee break really sealed the deal.

Dip you clean off the pipe? The home depot stuff is often coated in oil. Which can contaminate wood cuasing finishing issues. I would wipe them down and hit thrm with some spray paint/ laq.

@@woodwhisperer with rough that is true. I tend to buy sss and it never stays in my shop long. A few days max. I buy it for a project and its used asap. I should be on the job right now, but 35 mph winds and trying too apply house wrap does not work.
If space allows, go vertical 👍 I have customers that display hardwood both ways. Vertical is MUCH easier to flip through, look 👀 at & harder to mess up compared to horizontal or floor racks. One thing to keep in mind... if you’re storing boards over 10’ long it becomes unwieldy. One local company in particular has a habit of loading their vertical racks with 16 foot long boards 😫. Scary, even with the chain (especially considering most customers unhook the chain for better access 😬)

I store my stock vertical as well. Horizontal storage takes up too much space! I did horizontal years ago and it stored dust and was hard to sort through.

I've got horizontal and am switching to vertical. One big downfall of horizontal, unless you have one shelf per 'board type', is getting to the ones at the bottom of the stack.

Fastcap sells these kind of braces called “speed dividers”. Sell for $7.00 each. Might be an alternate.
By far my favorite comment! I designed the Speed Divider by Fastcap and I believe the pricing is $6 each when you buy a box of 10 which is way less $ than pipe flanges, pipes and plumbing caps...and way more flexible! Thanks for the mention! And for the safety minded people out there you can insert a pc of 1/4" plywood as a flag and label your sections and not skewer yourself. There is also a predrilled hole for a eyebolt in the end of the speed divider.

What about the wall sockets, the electrical outlets that you covered up with the wood in the storage rack you put up?
Won't they get damaged by the timbers resting or falling against them?

Not sure what issues could/would happen. The boards never really make contact with the outlets.

Ok, just can't keep up..lol. I built the horizonal storage system you did years ago with the sheet goods/scrap piece storage roller cart underneath that swings out on a pivot hinge. You changed yours not long after but, I still have mine and, yes, I have to use a ladder but I have built a ladder "system" kind of like you see in library's that slides back and forth along the front of the storage racks. If I had room I would put in a vertical storage also to make it easier to see what I have because it can be a pain to see what all you have stacked horizontally.

I havent got a lot of floor space, because I'm in a storage unit. That also means I can't mount things to the walls. So I use vertical storage on a cart with big castors, and I store it just inside my shop, when I open the unit door, I roll the cart out into the hall, freeing up floor space and allowing me to get at my tools. So while vertical does take up more floor space than horizontal, it can be made to take up less if you're space limited and can't mount to the walls.
Where did you get the wood rack in the shed from?
Is that outlet in the beginning labeled reefer?
You mentioned in your earlier videos that you had decided against using the mini splits due to the location the condenser unit would require, what did you do with it in this install?
I forced it into the location I wanted. :) The reason I put it off was because it was going to require busting up some concrete. So I had to wait for the funds to be available for such a big project.
What do you recommend or have in your shop for scraps of all sizes and species of wood?
I put mine in a giant tote and offer it up to a local periodically.

Just above your eye height, so you won't see it, but you wil hit it with your head (gues how I know :))

Why did you bother with leveling the the platform? The platform makes sense since it’s on concrete in a garage that sometimes holds a car.
Because a level platform doesn't encourage every board to lean to the right.

Nicely done I love vertical storage but don't have ceilings tall enough to store lumber like that. Those dang 10 & 12 foot boards man. Consider me jealous.
