    My mom and grandma always cut patterns with the near side of the pinking shears just outside the cutting line, so that way you still knew where the seam allowance was. When I don't use pinking shears and I have a fabric that frays a lot, I often zigzag stitch before I do my seams. I always put my zig zags on the very edge of the fabric, and tend to use a narrower stitch so that I can still tell my seam allowance. The folded seam surprised me; I may have to give that one a try!

      My grandma used pinking shears to finish seams too! I’ve never had much luck with them. I’ve used zig zag stitch too, which worked fine initially, but has turns into a disaster in the wash. Lesson learned! When I can’t serve seams I’m going to try the fold over method.

    I have to say the cat attack was a perfect example as I often have cat attacks when I try to sew. Purrfect!! lol. Since no pattern has ever fit me properly, I have had to try to make my own patterns and seam allowance was my choice. I saw a video using 3/8 seam allowance and zigziag on the edge. That was a total mess on my machine no matter the settings. So I never used the zigzag to finish it. Now I have seen a few of your videos. I see that I would be way better using the 5/8 seam allowance. Thank you.

    New subscriber here and I’ve just gotta say I LOVE your inquisitive kitty. I’ve heard her bell collar and seen her make a debut on multiple videos that I’ve watched and she’s just a hoot.

      I never knew WHEN to finish seams when I started sewing so I just pinked everything before I started sewing. 😢

    I enjoyed this video. It reminded me of the home ec classes I took in '77 & '78. Also, it included an orange cat, just like mine, that "helps" me sew 😊
    Also, as I don't have a serger, I thought there were other ways to finish seams. But, you've kept the options simple that will encourage newbies to sew. You demonstrated the same finishes I use.

    Thank you SO much! My favourite is option 2. I've watched other seam finishing videos that did something similar but didn't ONLY stitch through the single folded seam edge. They folded that side in half as you did, but then stitched it down to the main fabric so it laid flat. But that makes the stitching visible on the right side of the fabric. I like this so much better! As a newcomer to sewing, I felt my seams looked less than professional on the inside and I don't have a serger - so I'm definitely going to try this method. Thanks heaps! :)

      You are very welcome. This is one of my older videos, so thanks for watching. I’m probably going to do an updated version in a few weeks. After some really messy seam allowance using a zig zag stitch, I can’t recommend that method any more!! The folded edge and stitch is always a neat and tidy way to make your seams look nice, and not show on the outside 😉

      @@SewSewLounge I'm still new so despite following everyone's tips, my seams are still messy. Thanks again.

    Thank you for this video! I'll try the second seam on my next sewing project.
    I have a few questions I hope you could answer:
    1. I'm not sure if I should use these methods after every seam (similar to pressing) or only at the end?
    2. What should I do when two pieces that already have these seams connect (for example: a shoulder to the rest of the shirt)? Wouldn't it be too bulky?

    • @SewSewLounge
      @SewSewLounge  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It’s really up to you! I usually use the same seam finish for the entire garment based on the fabric and the finish that works with it ☺️ UPDATE: I think I read your questions wrong, let me clarify: sometimes I finish a seam once the whole seam is put together, ie. the underarm seam that connect to the side seam or finish the hem once the whole garment is put together. But I usually finish the shoulders before attaching the sleeve or finishing the armhole. If that doesn't make sense, shoot me an email and we can chat about it 😉

    What about just cutting the pattern out with picking sheers

    • @SewSewLounge
      @SewSewLounge  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You could totally do that. My pinking shears make my hand cramp so there’s no way I could cut out a whole pattern!
