We came to visit family here in Canada in '86 and went to the Zoo. We still have the polaroids :). I visited a couple times over the years and it still looks the same in a lot of areas.
Living just across the border in suburban Buffalo, I’ve only been to the Toronto Zoo twice (once in the 80s, and the second time in maybe 91/92), but remember it being awesome.
I freaked out over the lionfish at the Metro Toronto Zoo is that I dislike lionfish since I went to Orlando Florida in 1985. That lionfish I saw looks more white than the original grey.
Nice documentary. Been to the zoo twice, first in the early 1980s, then in 1992. While not bad as zoos go, there are some VERY serious shortcomings: Whenever you see a dirt floor, it is anything but natural. It's a giant red flag. It means you've got animals far too large for their containment as they are trodding the same turf over and over again. It's almost impossible to be humane and contain rhinos, elephants, giraffes and other large exotic animals, then pretend you're giving them a natural habitat. The Polar Bear exhibit is a disaster. Where's the ice? Instead I'm looking at cruel rock formations and a cement pool. I always take a dim view of any polar bear exhibit and maybe a wide open area in the artic will be okay. Also think of how they must bear a Toronto summer (sorry I had to do it). The orangutans might as well be in prison, though I'll say that for most of the exotic animals here. But in this case, a jungle gym. Really? How about a nice forest instead? On the plus side, the Canadian animals seem to be given the space they need and you need to get aboard a train to cover their exhibits. As it should be, just wish the entire zoo was like that. They'd get a passing grade if they eliminated most of the exotic species, gave the few that are left the space they need. I realize this video is 34 years old, but that zoo standard persists to this day. I've seen far worse.
The zoo use to have plains zebras and live along side the rhinos... Wow I can't believe it that's cool, the toronto zoo use to have these species of zebra and live share the encloser with the white rhinos, unit many years later they are replace by another species of zebra, the grevy's zebra that the them and the rhinos placed in seperate enclosers. But why would they replace a plains zebra with the grevy's zebra, and place zebras and the rhinos in a separate encloser?
Never mind guys, I saw the really old maps from the zoo and yeah. They actually use to have two species of zebras until they remove the plains zebras, and placed the ostrich and the white rhino in new separate enclosers in the later years, and the ring-tailed lemurs are in the zoo before until they remove them in years later, but took away the mandrills years later but bring back the lemurs instead. Gee the toronto zoo has went through alot of changes like the other zoos in the world.
You are my personal hero for uploading this
I use to watch this a lot when I was a kid. This really takes me back!

The aza encourages to breeding of Grevy's zebra. There was an incident between the white rhino and the zebra, so the zoo separated them
