    I was in Scotland in March 2020, shortly before the first of many lockdowns happened, and travelled around on ScotRail nearly all of the journeys I made, including some on the class 385. I certainly enjoyed travelling on the class 385 and will head back to Scotland to travel on them again

    Great vid Dylan. I work on these units from time to time. Good units in general, I agree about the seats, only other thing I noticed is depending what end of the train you sit, it can get quite noisy when the driver is braking. I believe its down to the regenerative brakes and traction motors but as I say only noticeable at one end of the train

      @@moestrei fucking simple really the windows face forward so the drivers face forwards. He is responsible for the train and the passengers, its not his job to give a fucking guided tour you knob head. If you dont think it is safe keep off the trains and then theres more room for the people that have common sense. Its like putting blinkers on a race horse to keep it looking forward and stop it being distracted. Plus the fact it stops the driver seeing all the Jock junkies lying in the gutters around Glasgow and that other shithole Edinburgh. Talking of shitholes the Welsh will be introducing the class 197 (which is a rip off version of the unit in this video) as the Office for Rail and Road signed off a letter of Authorisation on the 13 January so yep they must be safe as well then.

    Great video Dylan. I really enjoy your railway journey videos across the UK and Europe. I travel on the 385s everyweek from Edinburgh to Glasgow and back to visit my father in Glasgow. I personally do not like them - the seats are too hard and uncomfortable and the bright lighting inside. I live in the Scottish Borders and travel on the 170s or 158s from Galashiels to Edinburgh - i find their ride quality and comfort much better. On the 170s on that route - there are two first class sections in the three car unit and standard class tickets are valid in there - i usually get a seat in there. If those units run on the likes of Glasgow / Edinburgh - Aberdeen/Inverness - then passengers must have a first class ticket to sit there - on the Borders route - they do not bother at all. The class 385s, i find to be quite bumpy when they run at speed along the Glasgow to Edinburgh via Falkirk High Route and find that the other commuter stock have a smoother ride quality - including the 380s, the 156s, 158s and 170s.
    Wemyss Bay is a showpiece of a station and it is a nice journey from Glasgow Central to the small Inverclyde village and port. Great video and you have great knowledge of the local area. I had know idea that a roman fort was located near Bishopton, Renfrewshire.

    I really feel for the drivers of those EMUs that have connecting gangways at the front of each driving coach. Not only do they mean the cab is claustrophobically small, visibility must be severely restricted which I would have thought would have been a safety issue. They are bad enough on the 380s that we have on the Ayr Line (a decent commuter train otherwise) but look even worse on the 385s.
    Wemyss Bay Station is magnificent by the way. It was designed by James Miller who was responsible for much of Central Station where this journey commenced. Amongst other projects he was the architect of my local station at Troon, half of which sadly burned down last summer.

    • @ChilternSam
      @ChilternSam 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The internal doors that separate the left side of the cab from the gangway walkthrough sections are able to be pushed back to allow for more cab space on some of the units which feature the gangway doors.

    • @egpx
      @egpx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@ChilternSam Ah right, I guess that takes care of my first concern then. I still worry about the gangway restricting the driver’s view though. Ahh! Memories of my visit to Wemyss Bay at the start of my UK travels in September 2018, although I had a class 380 instead of a 385. I scored a 385 later in a journey from Glasgow to Edinburgh (while Princes Street station was still a construction site). I noticed that there were no hanging baskets or stands of flowers on your visit, unlike the day I was there. On the return from Wemyss Bay, I changed at Paisley Gilmour Street to take the side trip to Ayr, again with a class 380. Took photos of the Dalry bunnies and the wreck of the hotel at Ayr that was threatening to collapse onto the railway. My train terminated in the northside bay platforms and the line was closed beyond Ayr until the hotel wall could be stabilised. Thanks again for the memories of one of my first rail journeys in the UK.

    Thanks, again, Dylan, for a fascinating report on my home area trains. I do find them pretty good, especially acceleration, and they spank along terrifically between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Wemyss Bay station is a gem and it's great that the powers that be restored it a few years back. The only sad aspect is in its role as a ferry terminal. When I went to Rothesay by train a couple of years ago for a weekend break hardly anyone got off the train with us to go to the ferry. Almost everyone arrived by car. That situation is aided and abetted by the lack of co-ordination of train and ferry times, and we had to wait for nearly an hour before boarding!

    The 385/1s used on the Inter-city routes between Queen Street and Edinburgh/Stirling have first class, which is worth the upgrade for the comfier seats.

    I was on that train last week wi' me mate just oot of Bar-L. After necking bottles of Buckie we slashed all the seats, mugged on auld biddy as she sounded English, pulled the emergecy cord and scarpered before the polis arrived. Brilliant, ya bas!

    A good video which I enjoyed, thanks. It would have been nice to see you actually buy a ticket from a staffed ticket window, with a bit of human contact, but I know that young people now try to avoid as much human contact as they possibly can. I liked the display of old publicity posters on the station. You didn't mention the station at IBM which was closed in 2018 but has been mothballed, pending re-development of the site which is now subject to the planning process.

    Weymss Bay sure is a beautiful looking station, just needs some passengers! Seriously though, is this route fully electrified as I saw overhead supports most of the time, I'm perplexed why they are not using an EMU instead of a DMU (sounded like a DMU with the engine noise)

    Not bad, not bad at all - and to be honest, I'd rather the train lights were brighter, rather than dimmer.
    Wouldn't like the ironing board seats though, nor would I like the poor window alignment.
    But hey, since it was a quiet train, the Wi-Fi worked well enough! (Normally, as trains get busier, the wi-fi speed reduces, as more people connect to it - as the train wi-fi is just sharing one or more 4G connections throughout the train.)

    Dylan, and for any other tall people who have difficulty with ticket machines.. Tap just BELOW the buttons, or use your thumb flat. The fixed screens are usually at the wrong angle for those of us who are over 6feet tall!
