Coach, gotta give thanks to you. I recently got a coaching gig for a team of 15-16 year olds. And even though I've played for almost half my life, theres certain things that are hard to explain without having someone really put it in to words. So videos like these are not only helpfull for my own game (although I only play casually now) but to my boys aswell.
In my opinion, the whole drill is great except the part that he told the guys to land perfectly on two feet and inside the hoop. As pro shot taught us, jumper needs sweep and sway, which makes the landing slighlty farther than the initial take off.
Fariz Hakim I think your argument can be qualified, to a degree. His drill does work, however. It just depends on the speed of the shooter or the defender. A smart guard can read his defender and pick which motion is best. The sweep and sway is good, but not always the most effective. His technique is excellent for a point or shooting guard who can put a body on a smaller point guard or for a guard who already has a bit of space between his defender. Imagine CP3 on John Wall. Sweep and sway at a fast pace. Imagine John Wall on CP3. He can use what's being shown. It just depends.
Fariz Hakim And let me qualify my statement even more. Paul Pierce is FAMOUS for this type of step back shot. Paul does/did hops and dragged. It just depended on his defender. So match-ups matter, speed matters...the more arsenal you have, the more options you have.
Thank you for these videos Coach. We don't have these kinds of tutorials when we were trying to learn basketball back then. Just watching pros play. These videos are very helpful, especially to young players, who needs to learn the fundamentals of basketball.
everything really good about the drill, except that part which you must land on the hoop. its important that you have power on your shot, so you gotta sweep and sway. im sure if it was coach nick or better yet coach hoover there would be no problem with it. and low key if you take a closer look some of those guys were using the sweep and sway, even if not too noticeable
BBALLBREAKDOWN i could not do a step back till i hit the weights. i just did not have the strength//balance till now. alot of ballers would also like to know what exercises for chest//back//shoulders are b ball specific.
As far as stepback footwork, I don't like just pushing off the front foot foot. I like both feet on the floor, the front foot pushes as the back foot steps into the hop: that creates more power and space as opposed to just balancing and pushing off the front foot. Off the hop, you want to think about the three t's: land turned, top of the knee (ball), top of the ball (hand). Lift that shooting shoulder on the shot to get your sweep and sway.
>opposed to just balancing and pushing off the front foot Are you taking about: 1 foot step in (feign) Dribble back Push off Land 1, 2 (Step in, dribble back, land step, land step) ? I did that back when I was younger and played. I never knew about: Dribble first Step in (gather step?) Pick up dribble / bring both hands on ball Push off Land 1, 2 (Dribble / ball hits floor, step in, 2 hands on ball, land step, land step) (It's the eurostep footwork). You get WAY more distance. You don't have to guide the ball with a dribble as you step back because the ball is already in your grasp. You lose the dribble when you step in, so it's up to the player to decide if it helps with the feign.
The thing that scares me about this drill is that they are a millimeter away from stepping on the actual ring and falling on their face or twisting an ankle. The motion is robotic and they are looking down at the rings....
Kane Dinsay The rings are only there to help drill the proper footwork to make sure the player is creating the max distance he/she can between them and the defender. Then you remove the rings and incorporate shooting the ball.
I suspect the forward lunge is un-necessary, complicates teaching the concept as well. Having seen this while watching the NBA, it's often done without the fake drive. If you watch Harden, you'll also see him manipulate and wait until the defender's foot position gives him the opening he's looking for.
5:10 That jump shot gave me cancer.... lol

Thank you for your words of wisdom
Fariz Hakim I agree with what you're saying.
BBALLBREAKDOWN

He gotta add the sweep and sway to this though
Naw youd get your ass blocked bruh.. Just pullup, idfk why these dudes only jumping 1 inch off the ground lol

I agree
A stronger core will really help this move. And plyo moves. Cuz its like a mini explosive jump. Tight core will keep you balanced
For sure, good point!

Tough break at the tournament. You guys had a good showing though.
Chandasouk Thanks. breakdown coming up soon

Would you recommend teaching this move because it encourages swaggy p style isos
0076robert It doesn't have to be out of an iso. You could do this out of pinch post...
When are you going to do a demonstration on the finger ?
Great video as always coach!
mitsos mitsou Thanks! I think it's a useful tool for spacial awareness...
I tried to stream your games but the site would not cooperate, so I'm really looking forward to your breakdown of the tournament.
I'll try and get it done today
Great drill....I want to use this with my son.

Code P3BBALL didn't work at checkout.
john SORRY! It's P3BBALL20
lol that white guy
I hate coaches that make you do drills without a ball. Drills are supposed to mimic games. are you gonna do a pretend step back or a real step back
The white kid can't shot
Boo Boo.
