I refuse to pay for a subscription. If they go this way I will move to something else. I left Adobe for the same reason.
100% Hopefully the money people realize that's the reason many of us went to Affinity.
I totally agree. A subscription model is always, and I repeat always, more expensive than it was before! I'll als look for something else then.
Same here 🙂
Same. If they force a subscription for affinity I’ll uninstall and move on. I’m sick and tired of subscription services and will go out of my way to use tools that don’t use that model for profit.
As a casual user of Affinity products, I won't stay around for a subscription model.
When a large company with a subscription model buys a small company without a subscription model, then this usually does not end with anything good for a small company. Corporations are gradually bringing purchased companies into their overall corporate culture and pricing policies.
Oh, no. This is disastrous news.
I'm scared. I just started using Affinity and now this happens.
I only supported Affinity due to the one time purchase. They switch that and I'll be moving on.
In a heartbeat.
I even bought their other software knowing I wouldn't use them, just to support Affinity.
This came as a shock! RIP Affinity. V2 will probably the last version before bloat+subscription commences, or it just gets killed off.
I hope you'll explore alternatives to Affinity in your channel.
"No changes are planned AT THE MOMENT..."
Reading between the lines not even needed.
Yes, "AT THE MOMENT" is the key phrase. It doesn't really tell us ANYTHING about the future.
Great news for Canva. Terrible news for professional creatives.
Serif rode in on the "we hate the subscription model of Adobe" wave only to do a total about face.
For it to happen in such a short amount of time, one can only see this as a sellout.
I feel like a sucker for purchasing their Universal License.
On the App Store right now:
Save 30% today off Affinity Designer for Mac. (Photo and Publisher as well)
One-Time purchase for lifetime access, with no subscription.
Who's lifetime?
This is a shameful con.
Explosive growth due to the anti-subscription model. Big company takes notice and buys it. Let's hope they're not stupid enough to throw away the whole user base. Unless they plan on sinking it, in which case they have no reason to care.
worried, but i figure at least i'll have a year or so before anything major changes, and if they move to a subscription model for Affinity i'll just never upgrade and continue using V2 as long as i possibly can.
That's what I did with CS6 Until Affinity came along. Done it before, and I'll do it again if needs be
And the comments from the CEO were so disingenuous. 'We're all family', 'not planning pricing changes at the current time' etc. The usual corporate speak. No mention of 'I was given a boat load of money and so I really don't care what happens to my company, its' products or its' staff anymore'...byeeeeeeee... Of course they will change to a sub model. So I will be keeping my copy of V2 on a USB and if they go down that route I'll be looking for another outright purchase.
Man, you said it ALL ! I thought exactly the same when I watched the CEO's speech... what a bunch of mf's.
As an Affinity user I received an email from them today about it..for my part, if the new owners of Affinity choose to go the way Adobe did and implement the subscription model, then I'll stop using it (upgrade further) and eventually I throw them out of my system just the same way I did with Adobe... as simple as that
The issue isn't a low price (for me) it is I don't want to auto-pay for a features that a company might hypothetically release.
Thanks for your honest opinion, Trent. I think most Affinity users feel the same way.
I left Adobe years ago for Affinity and I have spent really BIG on their books, as well as on each of the software (Designer, Publisher and Photo) on desktop and on the iPad. I absolutely LOVE them, so need I say that I am so disappointed by this self-serving move by the creators of Affinity! Moreover, I cancelled my Canva account also years ago as I absolutely hated the platform and the offering/creators/owners/company. I will not be purchasing any further Affinity versions, so once the current version ceases to work, I will look around and purchase something that used to resemble the good old Affinity software suite. I think this will be the fastest extinction of a brand and it's software in history. PEOPLE ARE NOT HAPPY AND THERE WILL BE CONSEQUENCES as they will demonstrate their displeasure by changing to something else...
Bad news
Nothing lasts forever. I'm just glad I purchased Affinity before it changes... It is perfect for me.
I literally JUST bought Affinity after Vectornator got rebranded and became a subscription. Brutal.
Exactly. Do they not see that we're exhausted from subscription pricing? Offer us a stable one-time fee and we'll flock to it. Unless there's so much more money in subscription models that we can go eff ourselves because who cares about users anymore.
Trent, your comment regarding a company buying an app just to kill it is something I experienced. Back in the day I used Macromedia's "Freehand" for vector artwork/illustrations (a direct competitor to Adobe's "Illustrator".) Well, Adobe bought out Macromedia and, not long after the acquisition, "Freehand" went the way of the Dodo.
As you said, this Canva story is still fairly new. One can only make assumptions of Affinity's future at this point in time. Unfortunately, previous similar stories have resulted in acquired then "killed" products. Or the business model changes (e.g. from one-time purchase to subscription).
Thanks for the comment, @lowellaguno. Yes, it is very frustrating whet great programs are killed by big companies.
I expect nothing good to come of this. Collectively, as consumers, we've demonstrated that we will put up with subscription based pricing. I will not. If Affinity goes subscription based, I'll be enjoying 2.4 (or 2.5 if they actually give it to us) for the rest of my life.
I, as a pessimist' predict Version 3 will be subscription at best.
I'm a satisfied user of Affinity Photo 2 and was strongly considering buying Affinity Designer. Now I shall wait to see what happens. If a subscription model is introduced then, if I can, I shall use an alternative. I don't use any piece of software enough to justify continuously paying a subscription.
My advice honestly would be to buy Affinty v2 while you can. You’ll still be able to use it even if affinity/canva turns subscription model. It just won’t upgrade to v3. Plus I believe all of affinity’s software are on sale currently (30% off)
@@xxwoman Yes, they have a Spring sale. I downloaded a copy of the executable for Photo and I'm considering picking up Designer relatively cheaply for the reason you suggest. Thanks!
This news doesn't make me happy at all. In addition to the fact that affinity is probably turning into a rental program, I fear that this rebellious and free spirit will be lost. How I hate this f****d up economic world!
PS: I'll stick with your channel. I like the way you explain things. And the topics you are interested in are also my interests (except for tech, but only because I don't know exactly what kind of tech) 😆
Thanks @sechmettara! Yeah, "tech" is too general a term and I should probably just remove it at some point :)
I only purchased Affinity software (all three programs) for the first time about two weeks ago, but when I read the email this morning about the merger, I immediately got a little depressed and suspicious. I never trust when one company buys another, for something will ALWAYS change that hurts either the customer or the employees (usually of the smaller company that was bought). I sure hope that Canva doesn't ruin what is a good thing (the pricing model), and is what drove many people from Adobe to Affinity apps in the first place. I guess time will tell, but I'm not exactly brimming with hope for a bright future. Hopefully I'll have to admit I'm wrong.
Wow. Incredible news. I have used Canva for 10 years, and Affinity for about 2. I never saw this coming, but Canva has been growing a lot, and continues to grow.
Very worried I bought a whole lot of Serif products and was especially in love with Craft Artist Pro ,then Affinety Designer came and all Craft Artist owners had to deal with no new updates .recently I bought Affinity Designer 2 for iPad as my craft artist program is shutting down when I use the photo lab . Now this … I cannot do subscription 😢
Received an email this AM from the Affinity team with a 4 part pledge from Affinity & Canva, and I quote. #1 We are committed to fair, transparent and affordable pricing including perpetual licenses that have made Affinity special. Hopefully you received the same today.
Thanks @shackcf! Yup, I made a follow up video about it:
th-cam.com/video/YagHjj7lIRQ/w-d-xo.html
The biggest fear for me is not the subscription model as such, it’s that if we continue using the apps for the next 2-3 years, and then Canva decides to do something drastic and unfavourable by many of Affinity’s OG users, we’ll be stuck with a ton of Affinity files to try and rework into other apps.
I can only imagine a big corporation coming in and deciding they "know better" and ruin it all.
This looks like a win for Adobe
corporations buying other corporations always ends badly for the end user.
My best case scenario and hope is that canva uses affinity's engine to add professional tools to its web/desktop app while letting the affinity team have their creativity
Best case. Trust that the Affinity people know what they're doing and let them keep it up as is. Honestly, if they were vocal about those goals specifically, major respect.
@gyananchan4256 , that would indeed be the best case.
My heart sank to the bottom of Mariana Trench when I read the news this morning. Mostly because of what Canva have done to other companies they have bought...
What other companies have they bought??
@@xxwoman "We couldn’t be more excited about the possibilities ahead as we welcome Affinity to Canva. Based in the United Kingdom, they join a number of other European companies who have become part of Canva, including Flourish, Kaleido, SmartMockups, Pexels, Pixabay and SlidesCarnival."
I'm afraid that I, too, echo the sad refrain that most comments below reference. I came to Affinity due to my previous editing software moving both to a subscription model and concentrating on web development around the same time period. I have been extremely pleased thus far with both the development and the friendliness of the Affinity team. So very sorry to see the possibility of it ending.
If we bought an affinity program it was advertised as software we own on our machine. There is no licensing attached to it, so if they decide to go subscription, we will still have the last version of the program on our machines to use as long as we keep it on our machine. They could offer a new version of affinity products as a subscription, but that wouldn't affect the old versions we have.
Well, I’m glad I bought the suite already. It doesn’t sound promising. But, I also wondered how Affinity made money.
Great analysis Trent, thanks for the video!
Yes, I was gutted I saw that in my email this morning. Had exactly the same thought as you.
I thought it had to be April Fools but remembered we’re still in March.
RIP Affinity
I love this!! The power of canva combined with the power of affinity is a win win!! Even if its subscription its worth it. I just hope its year by year and not monthly!
We, users has lost as always. It was good while it lasted. I moved from Adobe 3 years ago. Seems like I am going back.
Look at the facts - Affinity sold out to Canva, Canva didn't just "buy" Affinity. Weren't we paying them enough in subs? Affinity's board just made a shed load of money. No forseeable changes? Do they think we're not aware of previous promises by trusted suppliers who sold out?
I'm with you we'll have to wait and see...but my guess is this in not something we want.
I think it sucks, the company I worked for was bought out by another company, they told us nothing will change. 2 weeks later everything changed. I never trust the larger company.
Canva, please don't let users subscribe to Affinity...
If there is no competent Adobe replacement without a subscription, then Adobe probably wins. I hate subscription software if I can possibly avoid it.
Let’s all cancel the subscription if it becomes one. Let’s stand up for our rights. I hate to pay so much money for something that could be more affordable. How miserable those CEO company owners must be.
I wasn't too worried until I started reading the comments -- both on TH-cam and IG, they are almost universally afraid that this means Affinity will go to a subscription model. I really hope they don't do that, or at least that it's one option, not the only option. I just found your channel, but if you want feedback, I'd specifically be interested in other software that uses vectors. I hope you don't just switch to making tutorials about Procreate. There are too many of those already.
Well, you might want to start making some instructional videos for GIMP. I'm afraid that's where we are all going to end up.
I see VectorStyler is on sale, $47. Flawed, but good potential, responsive developer and actually more features than Designer. Inkscape is improving (CMYK soon?) but still wonky. Figma still has a lot to offer (since Adobe's out of that picture now). Krita has become quite good. That said, I don't hate that I have CS 5.5 installed. Can still work old-school magic there. ;-)
I still use CS5.5 for professional work and have not felt the need to upgrade yet! Granted there are some new features I would LOVE in Indesign cc, and photoshop...but I don;t actually need them. And I did try Indesign cc on my pretty fast system and it ran like a dog wheras CS5.5 is super fast. I hate the idea of paying Adobe an unending fee to use my files.
Affinity isn't competitive enough to be a subscription service. Without any doubt, it'll move in that direction. I've personally seen how acquisitions work.
One future customer lost!
The bulk of Affinity customers are people who left Adobe products precisely because there was a subscription model, and there was no subscription on Affinity. It is not difficult to guess that once Affinity implements the subscription payment model, this will immediately lead to the loss of most of the customers. Let's hope they're smart enough not to. But hope dies last. 😀 Personally, I will never return to the subscription model. That's not why I left Adobe to come back.
@@gandolfred I doubt any loss of current Affinity customers will have any effect on Canva, and there will be A LOT (I've yet to see any positive comments from any).
Affinity users are how many? 3 million? Canva says their user base is 175 million. Insignificant.
The Affinity founders/board has been no different from any other young company. It starts out providing a great product. Then, as soon as the value gets to the level of turning them into multi-millionaires, with an acquisition offer, they take the money and forget all about their loyal customer base. When they get let go, which they always are, they'll start a new venture, and repeat.
I guess it was inevitable. Subscriptions have proven a very profitable business model. It exists because people are willing to pay time and time again and once subscribed, they have you locked in.
Very sad news but we will have to wait and see. I would be very disappointed if Canva killed Affinity, as you say, seen too many apps disappear into a bigger company's portfolio. I also diversifying in my videos as I have been too attached to creating videos about Affinity Photo / Designer
Thanks @Graphicxtras1, looking forward to seeing what your other videos are about!
Guys, I wanted to add... go check the comments below the ceo's video before they take them down !!!
100 % of the people understand what is happening.
Where? there are no comments on the Affinity site...
@@4dan2 type this on the youtube search bar : "A message to our amazing Affinity community" and look for the affinity account video. It's not on their site.

I am very hopeful for a stronger Affinity Suite, but almost sure by this time next year the Affinity Suite will be swallowed up and gone.
Then i suggest that all of you send a message to both companies what you do not want . if enough people put pressure to them they have to do what we the customers want.
True, @sannakarppinen4163, people can always vote with their wallets if a product goes in the wrong direction.
I’m worried that their software will be going to subscription based. Another caveat bad thing giving bank details online and hackers etc
Guys we have a new boss
Sucks big time, experience shows that when they say nothing will change, means in fact that it will, just a matter of time. Will they replace Affinity with some shite or at least go to subscription models like all their Canva offers. Sad day. Maybe Time to go back to Inkscape, or similar…
can't we replicate the Blender model on Inkscape, Gimp, krita, Scribus? I'm tired of wasting resources on these companies
Even though I already bought Affinity Designer 2 iPad 😢
Well, GIMP 3.0 is coming very, very soon...
Resumindo, triste, no básico. E vejamos o que está por vir.
they will show us....and then we will show them....
very worried, no good can come of this
I see the reaction to the announcement has resulted in another email, trying to alleviate concerns!
Either way, the CEO is a dumb ass if he honestly thinks things will continue as-is, but with a new subscription option in parallel! That's not how it works with acquisitions. The perpetual version will be slimmed down to force us to pay.
Glad to see we're having some effect, even if it'll make zero difference ultimately. Clearly, they had no clue!
Bye Canva Designer, Canva Photo and Canva Publisher.
Welcome to Inkscape, Gimp and Scribus....
Guys, we're screwed. :'D
We got some follow up news with Affinity pledging to stand by their fair pricing, so the situation may be better than it appears!
oh no - gutted
Real disastrous news if Affinity goes subscription I will dump it
Subscription = RENTAL = Bye Bye Canva
I'm sure this won't end well for Affinity.
Only time will tell. So far, it doesn't seem like there is much change to other companies that Canva has bought (Pexels, Pixabay). But they could have other plans for Affinity.
Affinity v3 will be subscription, all software/apps will go this way , theres too much money to be made to not go sub..
Sad
This is not good news.
I think this news sucks!
no changes at the moment.....ha!! GIMP app here I come!!!! the only reason to invest time and money of affinity is out the window now 😔😖
Well, crap. I recently bought the Affinity suite. If they go subscription, I'm going to be pissed. The primary reason I bought in was to cancel my Adobe suite subscription. I also had Mint, and I hate that Intuit killed it. I ended up moving to a different solution.
