My good friend introduced me to Smog at 15, maybe 16. We would play music as his dad drank wine and remodeled their old school house/home. I was full of angst then. And I would daze out to this music, and didn't really understand it completely. I avoided the chance of being depressed. But it has always echoed on. I've come to really love Bills music, and its building. I've only found that in Waits, Cohen, and few others. But only Bills music has played such a part in my life. I'm 27 now. Looking in the rear view mirror, and keeping one eye busy and distracted on the road forward. I cry with chills, scared and proud. It tears me. But I remind myself of the old days before us. I think of the wilderness, and the smile on a child's face, and my mother with happy tears, and my father singing baritone in his bath robe, and the idea of being a real man. A rock. The perspective Bill gives me, puts me on top, and helps me see the beauty of life.
I’m always glad receiving positive comments from my lovely fans❤. It’s actually my pleasure bringing you sweet melody’s, may the good lord bless you. Have you been to any of my concerts?
One of the best singer-songwriters of my entire lifetime. I've seen him 3 times, and will continue to see him whenever he is nearby. I love you, Bill! You have changed my life, for the better.
@@lindamon5101 I've seen Leonard Cohen, John Prine, Emmylou Harris, Randy Newman, U2 (1993), Radiohead at least four times, the Pixies, Foo Fighters, Sigur Ros, White Stripes, David Bryne, etc... Before covid, I got out plenty.
I love Bill Callahan ... and this great performance happens to include a couple of my my favorite songs by Bill, Smog, etc. Thank you for sharing and long live the Dead Mans Shoes soundtrack!

I don't see the similarities at all. Father Callahan was a drunk who lost faith and ran from the light. If you ever read the Wolves of the Calla and Song of Susannah, he comes back and continues his story and dies in a pretty badass way, but still no connection. Except the name. :D
He's a solid three-phased guy. The old stuff that was just hardcore LO-FI, then the mid stuff like Knock Knock and Red Apple Falls where he's finding more melody, then Bill Callahan he's done with all the nutty girlfriends and finding solid ground in his life and the music reflects this.
Such a great song ... "With intensity, a drop evaporates by law" ... that reminds me on my studies on evaporating sessile droplets. In the simplest case evaporationtime is proportional to V0^2/3 ... sorry for smarting off ;-)

What a shame he was on TEDx and not TED. I love TED, but TEDx is just a bunch of worthless bums as guests in comparison. I once watched a useless guitarist trying and justify his lack of skills, but he didn't really prove his point because his performance was so awful. Bill Callahan is awesome, and he doesn't need to be here.

Agreed. I might add Nick Drake to your list. But yes, a very small terrific list it is. And I discovered him last December. At 61.
Wow, being just 27 and looking back at life as if you were a tanned 90 year old sailor... I don't know what to think.
@@DateTwoRelate Love Callahan, Waits, Cohen, and Nick Drake. As far as Callahan's contemporaries, Will Oldham and David Berman are at the same level.
Sounds like you've got a lot of pretension to get over, tbh.
This is a lovely thoughtful post. Nurture your beautiful spirit as you travel the days, weeks and years ahead. Yours will be a unique journey.
Jesu God. Bill Callahan having to perform at a Ted Talk for a bunch twits is the best thing ever.
Hopefully he woke up a few of those people.
making the difficult simple and burying the remains in beauty. only a rare few are able to do so in such a short lifespan.
Yes Selma beautifully put _/\_
wow.. yes well said.
He ain't dead
His voice is so calming & sticks with me. He's got this cool poise about him
Bill Callahan: Poetry of sound.
no. its poetry of semantics. soundpoetrywise there are other giants active as loving runners

hueroski try some water for that thirst...
Agreed. saw him play with full band; outside in Driftwood, TX. I've never experienced such a feeling. It was more profound than DMT.
Joseph B this guy knows his audience
That is the voice of universal consciousness.
@Nouvelle Terre Idk about Jesus, but he walks with Walt Whitman for sure.
saw him at eddie's attic this past year in atlanta in a crowded second show, and man i would rank it in the top five shows i've seen in my life.
Hahaha, u could maybe get out more? Lol.

Looking forward to going to see the wonderful Bill Callahan tonight in Manchester UK. So excited.
Still one of the most bizarrely entertaining sing/song'ers I ever saw
Wow, Bill talks! It's so fantastic to hear some of his thoughts about the songs!
never heard him talk that much.
Haha thought the same
nice to hear his thoughts behind the song
The only good thing that has come out from a TED Talk
one of my all time favorite artists. Thank you, Bill.
Poetry + Amazing Voice == Bill Callahan.
Jeez, so amazing, just sitting and being brilliant at being Bill Callahan. A true artist making his art.

It's sometimes hard to believe that he was once the early version of smog.
Only beginning to start listening to this guy but I think he is a bit special.
He has an essence of tenderness to his music that very few share.
This song is a beauty. The chords is wonderful.

brilliant with an exclamation point!
I always got the impression most of his songs were written in an attempt to be the best one to play at his funeral. Particularly the first one.
never thought about it that way, but i like the you frame that. epic songs
the first funeral?
I can totally see him as Father Callahan, from Salem's Lot

In my experience his shows with bands are trainwrecks. That’s never turned me off his beautiful songs, though. Absolutely beautiful.
That's not true at all. Matt Kinsey and others add so much to his live shows. I've seen him close to ten times live. Always a great live show!
What a shame he was on TEDx and not TED. I love TED, but TEDx is just a bunch of worthless bums as guests in comparison. I once watched a useless guitarist trying and justify his lack of skills, but he didn't really prove his point because his performance was so awful.

The (TEDx) bar has been raised since after Bill's performance.
What's the difference between the two?
Love Bill, and love/d (smog). Pity about the awful acoustics in this recording. Shame, a great track...
