      I knew about them from the beginning but it wasnt till 1999 when i visited my brother for the summer in california that i heard eulogy on the radio and became instantly obsessed. That same day after work i went to a lil record store called Dimple records and bought everything with Tools name on it that existed to that point and came back to nebraska annoying the shit out my friends. It was always Tool from then on lol

    I know you said you're still learning, well join the club. You'll keep getting educated no matter how many times you look or listen to Danny Carey playing the drums. Even guys who have been playing drums for 15,20, or 30 years are still learning from watching and listening to him. He is definitely in a class of his own, it's called being a legend.... I say this because he is a quiet professional who is over looked but let's his music do all the talking for him. Great commentary.

    Great reaction man, always stoked to see new people get into heavier music, and especially TOOL. It's also nice to see some black folks opening up and expanding their musical world from being so hiphop centric. A lot of the world's problems melt away when you can share, love, and appreciate the same things with people that may not be just like you, it helps prove that we're all the same. There's a ton of great music in this genre and there's jaw-dropping talent to behold and appreciate as you're now finding. Welcome aboard sir, keep exploring and finding shit that moves you. If we ever find ourselves at the same show, your drinks are on me. Much love from Dallas!

    So in my time spiraling out to Tool, one of the things of come to believe as an important takeaway. Is that The music likes to teach you, maybe even nudge you sometimes, or maybe even force you to eventually give up trying to "Control" the music by tapping out the rhythm, or deciphering the time signature. It just drops you, and leaves you behind with a puzzled look on your face.
    it doesn't want you to read the beat and predict the future. It wants you to live in the moment and accept it. That's when the magic happens. ;-) Enjoy.

    kitchnener ontario canada love lateralus from tool much respect to the rappers checking out the groove metal

  • @moviebad109
    @moviebad109 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    It’s 100% a set beat. If you notice, there’s a driving “click” through the whole track. Locking into it is the hard part. If you notice during his solo section, the hi-hat is in time with that click. That click persists through every section of the song.
    The time signature isn’t really moving, the whole verse section is in a kind of “stratified” 33/8. What they’re doing is fucking with the meter within that to achieve that “stutter” you’re talking about.
    It’s actually super impressive that you were able to tap into that without having the music theory knowledge to really “know” what was happening. Good instincts man.

  • @Valterius87
    @Valterius87 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    No disrespect my man but danny carey is above all other drummers. I respect that you're an artist yourself and trying to learn another art. Time signature is intricate, and tool as a whole takes it to a different level. Trying to find a "beat" in their music is an exercise in futility simply because of the fact that in their music, it is not a set deal, unlike rap. Again, no disrespect to the art. Tool is unlike any other band. They have no set beat, each member plays at different "beats" all at the same time. They bring art to an art in their sound. I applaud you for coming out of your shell and immersing yourself in a different form of the same art that you yourself perform and create. Thanks for your vid... I'm glad to see actual artists going above and beyond to add their own thoughts to other artists without being overly critical.

    Oh nooooo, at the end of the video you just mentioned the third part of the trifecta comprised of Tool, RATM, and System of a Down. I grew up on Hip-Hop but had those three bands in heavy rotation when I got into metal, before moving on to blues then back down through R&B and progressive rock. I wouldn't be surprised if the music of those bands was discovered to change the structure of peoples' brains.

    Also there's a moment around the 12min mark in your video where DC loses (ever so slightly) the timing of his hard-hat, now I know from experience (as I'm sure every musician does) that once you lose the beat it can be dificult to find it again and you feel under pressure, but to do it within a couple bars with one leg while still keeping the rhythm going with your arms, and in front of a live audience? That is god-tier talent

  • @KittyKarenpoo
    @KittyKarenpoo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you listen carefully, the bass player is leading the rhythm structure, and as long as Danny sticks to that sound, he's solid. That is hard to pick up because of course Maynard Keenan is dominant on vocals and the guitar is crisply over top, as well, so the idea that the bassist is actually controlling the whole song likely never occurs to the listener. That's particularly true when there is such a clearly dominant drummer, and in most bands the drums are god, but there you go. Everyone else gets to perform because of the sacrificial bass lead. He signals all the changes. Listen, for example, to 14:45, where the bassist does a diddly, and bang, the drummer and guitarist shift to the next phase. It's like that for the whole experience, and as they practice, I'm sure they set those parts down in stone, but otherwise it's totally liberating for the other musicians.

    I think as a rapper you might find out you have some natural instincts to play the drums , hear me out for a minute .. You realize the importance of beats/ tempo , rhythms, timing , break downs , fills . Something to think about anyway . You can get a entry level kit for a couple hundred bucks , then if you find out drumming is for you , then upgrade , if not you can sell for about what you have in a entry level kit.

    6'5" and 59yrs old. Pretty incredible that he does this for about 2hrs straight, every night in concert. He's know as The Octopus because because it sounds like he needs 8 limbs to create the sounds he does. He has 4 limb independence. That's like making circles with one arm triangles with the other, squares with one leg and hexagons with the other. Danny works incredibly hard on his craft, saying that he never wanted to be the weak link in the band. He's truely a force of nature. Keep your reactions coming✌🤘🤘

      Pretty accurate description of the skill it takes but I would add, making 5 circles with one hand, 3 triangles with the other hand, 9 squares with one leg and 16 hexagons with the other then beginning and finishing all 4 tasks at exactly the same time.

      What??? ok ok... lets get some things straight.... Digital playback on command activated by the drum stick.... because it looks like a electronic drum pad.... play anything for a few seconds, record....playback loop... "nice set of double kicks".... while playing an actual double kicks simultaneously ..well that sounds epic... Reality check for those who dont see the stack of components to the left rear of his seat..... Kids are doing this with individual instruments and recording there voice...sound like they have a whole band!! Danny Carey pioneered this tech...

    I discovered tool early in highschool when I was going through a rough period in my life and their music helped bring me through the darkness and changed me forever. There's all kinds of wonderful music in this world but tool is something else entirely. You should listen to Reflection! Off of the album Lateralus. It's in 4/4 so you'll be able to catch the beat haha. I appreciate your vibe man, you're a real one! Big respect and love from Berkeley CA

    Rah, you had some questions about polyrhythms in SOAD’s “Toxicity.” I explain in the comments section what polyrhythms are and suggest you give Pneuma another listen. Danny plays polyrhythms starting around 12:05 in this video: His feet, left hand, and right hand are all playing different time signatures.
