You're experiencing what a lot of people experience when they listen to Tool for the first time. All of hip hop, and the R&B that it came from, is written in 4/4. In fact, nearly all popular music in America is in 4/4, and a person's ear becomes very accustomed to that. But there's a whole world of music out there that is nothing like what you're accustomed to when it comes to rhythm and meter. You've only begun to scratch the surface. Keep it up man. It will only increase your skill as an artist.

Soul classics are often in 3/4 even that is rare today. What Tool does with polyrhythmic layering is mindblowing when you get into it :-)

    • @Droogie128
      @Droogie128 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Then the end of this song itself is in polymeter. The drums are in 4/4, while the rest of the band is in 3/4.

  • @sean_b_drummer
    @sean_b_drummer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +52

Lat-er-al'-us with emphasis on the "al". 😁 This one modifies the meter, 'swinging' through 7/8, 8/8, and 9/8 for much of the song. The last section is in 6/4. Far from your "normal" 4/4 of most popular music.
You should check out, Vicarious; it stays in 5/4 time from start to finish. It's a killer flow and fun to play drums with. 🔥🤘🏽😎 The lyrics are super deep and dark.
After that you need to check out, Schism. It has nearly 50 meter changes, and the
guys are so amazing the it doesn't feel clumsy. 🤩
Rockin' with you from just South of Portland, Oregon.
    💯 💯💯
My Sensei told us that to be a truly well rounded fighter, one must learn from and apply skills from many styles. I have taken that philosophy into music. To be a true musical ninja, one must learn from all genera. Carry on, Grasshopper! 🙏🏽

Like the channel man! Just two things:
The guitarists for Rage and from Tool are best friends. Tom Morello and Adam Jones. They grew up together. They also were in a band together when they were younger. So they have that connection. Maynard from Tool actually sings a cameo on a Rage song called Know Your Enemy. Check it out!
Secondly, Tool have a lot of lyrics based on a substance called DMT. It's a natural chemical in the human body that makes us dream but can be used for spiritualism and internal focus of the self. Lots of people have tried it and it's changed them profoundly, like Joe Rogan and Iron Mike Tyson. The artist who does the Tool covers is inspired by his own experiences with it. Tool has created numerous songs about those experiences as well.

One of the coolest things about this song is that they follow the Fibonacci sequence during the chorus, Fibonacci sequence ie the natural occurrence of the sum plus the previous number = next number ....so 1+1=2 2+1=3 3+2=5 and so on.... its natural in nature and in humans for physiological placement of facial features. So the meaning of this song talks about going outside of the normal, reaching further to expand our minds past our current understanding. Tool is very deep and requires several listens to pick up on their musical abilities as artists. Just my opinion.

G'day Rah bruv. I'm from S/E Queensland Australia. The best place to live in the entire world. Tool are just beautiful people getting together creating something literally original. Of course they have the influences but this is something different. They are getting older and want someone/people to take over the lead in this day and age so they can move on with their own lives.

🤣🤣 I can't help but laugh because I see his face and know the exact feels! The loss for words afterwards, feeling the need to rewind and listen to the multiple climaxes, the universal relatability to the lyrics even though you feel as though you're in above your imagination, and helplessly vibing to that finale. Nearly 20yrs on, I still get chills and still love to dissect this track. I know MJK comes off as pretentiously egotistical, but understand that when you and your band mates compose something of this nature, you might expect the rest of your species to transcend the trivial and reach for new heights such of that the song suggests.... to which we've fallen tragically short

Excellent analysis on the lyrics, Rah. The whole message of the song is about going outside of your comfort zone, taking risks, reaching your full potential and momentum, and perhaps going where no one has been at the end. It also brings forth the idea that as you start to consider all things that there are endless possibilities to things, each time reaching out to embrace whatever is to be grasped from above, below, to the left, to the right, and so forth. "Spiraling out" with each time having more opportunities at your disposal than the time before.
The lines making mention of colors are in reference to the process by which we start to see colors from the moment we are born. Infants initially see in only black and white, then eventually the spectrums of red and yellow, and every other spectrum comes into place after that.
Maynard (singer) based his rhythmic pattern of the words at the beginning on the Fibonacci Sequence (Golden Ratio) in Mathematics like so:
    Black-1
    Then-1
    White are-2
    All I see-3
    In my infancy-5
Red and yellow then came to be-8
    Reaching out to me-5
    Lets me see-3
    (1+1=2, 2+1=3, 3+2=5, 5+3=8, etc...)
This sequence, when shown in the form of a structure, forms a spiral. And can be found in many places, be it a hurricane, a fist, a skull, a rose, the shell of a snail, even the image of the Milky Way Galaxy.
You're doing a great job in your discovery of Tool, my man. Can't wait for you to spiral out with another reaction. Keep going, dude.

This is literally one of the best songs of all time. The message and meaning is absolutely extraordinary and it’s literally written to a numerical value found everywhere in the universe. The song is basically about realizing the depth of reality but keeping in balance with your spiritual self, and in the process learning to embrace what comes your way in life and make the best of it. I’m sure I could explain that more in depth but it’s just wayyyyy too much to type. I hate to be that Tool fan but you can’t lie that the song being made to fit the Fibonacci sequence isn’t awesome; I really recommend looking into it. 1000/10 song, it’s awesome to see you reacting to my favorite genre. I highly recommend checking out their songs Jambi, Schism, Stinkfist, or Vicarious in the future. Great content man 👍👍💯

If you do it just right, you end up turning off your "self" and your entire world becomes the music for just a little while. There isn't any "you", there isn't any past or future, just that moment of music and the experience of it. It's amazing.

🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥The beats are easier to catch in metal if you listen for the cymbals rather than the bass drum generally. But don't feel bad about not catching a tool beat on the first time, it comes with multiple listens when you know the changes are coming
Ænima is my favorite album but schism is my favorite song the bass goes hard!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

The artwork is totally DMT/Ayahuasca inspired if you want to know what 'substance' lead to much of what Tool are about. Watch The Spirit Molecule. They are by no means, druggies. Usually, a shaman is involved.

there are actually some pockets you can nod to in Tool you just have to find them, I see it as part of hat they do, kind of hunt the pocket, and sometimes there are even more than one pocket. Their mastery of accents and dynamics in music is phenomenal

  • @Soliloquy66

The sound at the beginning was the heartbeat of a baby still in the womb...which transitions to the "black and white are all I see...in my infancy. The red and yellow than came to me." ..referring to as your eyes develop..you can see color. Much as the rest of the song it is about evolving as a human and a spirit. Reach out and beyond what you know and think and experience. I am enjoying your dive into my favorite band. To experience a different feel..try the Pushit song from their Salival live concert. And too, Right in Two...you wont be disappointed.

This song was created by the musicians first. Then Maynard wrote the lyrics. The instrument players made a track that was based on the Fibonacci sequence. 1+1=2. 2+1=3. 3+2=5. 5+3=8. 8+5=13. If you count the consonants in the lyrics it repeats 1,3,5,8,13.

    • @TomG626

      Not consonants. Syllables.

To your comment about getting a lead-foot from this, I 100% got a speeding ticket the first time I listened to this album.
If you're digging on both Tool and Rage Against the Machine, I recommend giving the New York based Brass Against a shot. They're a brass band that does killer covers of a bunch of bands, but do a bunch of Rage & Tool songs.
I also highly recommend checking out some of the excellent drum covers of this song in particular. They can show how absolutely zany it's line is. Meytal Cohen does an excellent job at walking the line between her channel's production value and her tremendous talent.
    Keep killin' it here!

I’m fairly new to ‘tool’ within this past year and really new to your pod cast. Maynard James Keenan ,. Tool they are cerebrally spiritual. I didn’t catch the messages at first . I could write a Novak on how he gets into ones psyche with his message. Fockin deep thoughts. I appreciate your thoughtful feelings on this phenomenon known as “Tool”. They’ve been out there for years. I have no favorite tune. I’m fairly certain I haven’t heard all they’re extraordinary music , lyrics? I’m 67 . Holy Mother I seriously am looking forward for the this. I well continue to watch your pod cast , join your experience through this spiritual journey that is “Tool” .
    Peace out

Best advice to people getting into tool, just sit back and appreciate it. Follow the drums to get the best impression of the uniqueness. It blends so well because of how the band builds off each other. The lyrics matter but you gotta understand (if nothing else) the music as a whole is what makes the band so great. Love the time and energy you're putting towards things that feel different. If you only stick to what's comfortable you'll never grow. Preach growth and expanding our potential as music lovers and you'll gain followers trying to seek truth.
