  • "Complaints or The maiden and the nightingale" as is the full title of this piece, is the 4th (and the most well known) of 7 that belong to the piano suite "Goyescas, Op. 11" subtitled "Los majos enamorados" ("The Gallants in Love"). This piano suite was written in 1911 by Spanish composer Enrique Granados who was inspired by the work of the Spanish artist and painter Francisco Goya.
Though one can hear the bird in dialogue throughout the piece, intermingled with very intricate melodies that are all playing simultaneously (in a very elaborate counterpoint) it is at the end that it makes a longer statement. Maybe a farewell song?
Notice that this piece is also from 1911, like the Schoenberg "Six little piano pieces Op. 19", but here we have a very different style of music, romantic, and very strongly influenced by Spanish modes and rhythms.
This is my interpretation of this piece.
I do hope you enjoy them!
