I think Kevin captured that moment without time when he says 'Smile a while' to someone standing in a café.... We always want to inhabitate in such Smile a while state of mind...... An emotioned and warm goodbye from Barcelona...
RIP Kevin. You are a musical god, so you'll live on forever. I bought all of your albums and only wished I had the opportunity to see you perform live.
and one of the frustrating and endearing aspects of Ayers' career is that every time he seemed on the point of success, he would take off for some sunny spot where good wine and food were easily found . RIP
RIP Kev, I would say "see you later" but you'd just answer; "how will you see me later if you can't see me now." So glad I finally got to see you live about 6 years ago. Thank you for the wonderful music.
that´s a soprano saxophon. it´s part of the saxophon family as it is a conical metal woodwind horn, but it is fairly close to the clarinet in matters of size and key, both are in Bb. coltrane played the soprano as well as other saxes, check out "favorite things" in his version.
hi fluffysdad, well according to Kevin himself (on the Old Grey Whistle Test DVD which contains this tune) it is indeed Mick Fincher on drums. I think this is a lovely song, sort of French cafe dreamy innocence. The French version on the album is great too.
Such a lovely song that speaks of summer and pavement cafés, although I prefer the song in French; it just sounds sexier... If someone is interested, I've found this guy's site with some great KA tabs that sound pretty accurate to my ear. YT doesn't let me post the URL, but you can google "gartfrets" to find the site and then navigate to the Ayers page. This is a resource that should be shared...
You can hear some of Coxhill's busking on his first solo album, The Ear of the Beholder. His solo on "Red, Green, and You Blue" from the Shooting at the Moon album is a high point of civilization. Sadly, not much Lol on TH-cam.
It was good of Lol Coxhill to jump out of the tub and add his soprano sax. Too bad Syd Barrett & Kevin Ayers never put a band together; they might have made some great music together.
Love Lol's Ming the Merciless outfit - KA would have glammed up well as Flash or more likely Louche Gordon. And Phil Collins on accordion - would he had stuck to this instrument instead of all that singing.
I think I know exactly what MY OPINION is thank you kindly. I didn't bash him as a person or as an artist. I didn't use his name because I don't know him. I cannot vouche for his brilliance yet.
He fixed me on with "Song For Insane Times". And now i can't get enough of this genious guy!

Yeah, he was one of a kind, at the end of the day, he just wanted tranquility
Seductive, stylish, wonderful. A maverick and he left us a little too early......

R.I.P Kevin, such an original musician.
Kevin is one of the truly great British songwriters, up there with Ray Davies, Glenn Tilbrook, and Andy Davis/James Warren ( Stackridge/Korgis)

BUENISSSSSIMO !!!!!
As I follow a new musical thread set by LSDHead from Gong I see connections I've not connected for a while - do I see a Mr Coxhill on Sop Sax?

pleased for him. Nice and quite sweet end.
Descansa en paz Kevin.
Dude playing the clarinet looks like he is an extra from Star Trek the next generation.
Yes Joy of a Toy is wonderfull :)
I like how all the songs are 5:32 minutes long..
Help me, they played both on 8/8/70 and 19/12/70 in Paradiso, Amsterdam. Which date is this concert?
R.I.P.
It was good of Lol Coxhill to jump out of the tub and add his soprano sax. Too bad Syd Barrett & Kevin Ayers never put a band together; they might have made some great music together.
BASS VOX !!!!!!! DEEP,RICH TONE !!
This dude used to be in SOFT MACHINE. Kevin Ayers is a great musician, though not too many people know who he is.
Marvellous
Ming the Merciless on clarinet!

Goodbye Kevin.
i am smiling very much giggle giggle
Ricky Bobby - That's a soprano sax
Love Lol's Ming the Merciless outfit - KA would have glammed up well as Flash or more likely Louche Gordon. And Phil Collins on accordion - would he had stuck to this instrument instead of all that singing.
That soprano sax guy sounds like he's never heard this song before.
Might seem like a dumb question for Soft Machine fans, but WHAT ALBUM IS THIS FROM???
Forgive my ignorance, but what is the brass instrument used here?
+Ricky Bobby- But avoid Kenny G.
spitballarmy.com/?p=269
+Ricky Bobby- Also check out Wayne Shorter and Paul Winter -other fine soprano sax players (Jazz)
Is that a clarinet being played around 1:45 and if so what kind?
nice! sounds a bit like I will be your mirror by VU
Does anyone know if that is Mike Oldfield playing bass?
thanks man,
smile-a-while
Genius!
I think I know exactly what MY OPINION is thank you kindly. I didn't bash him as a person or as an artist. I didn't use his name because I don't know him. I cannot vouche for his brilliance yet.
Sleep well comrade.
