Capt. Myers, you obviously have extensive fishing knowledge and are an amazingly good teacher! I have been using spinning gear for many years, and I can readily see how the techniques you teach solve many problems and are clearly superior to what I've been doing. I'm about to to go outside and start practicing them. Looking forward to seeing your other videos. Many thanks!
This is the best instruction I have seen ever on proper use of a spinning reel. If some one is going out with me bringing spinning gear I do what I can to see that they watch it prior.
This should be required learning when starting out. I've got some bad habits to straighten out and I've wasted a lot of time and missed a lot of fish because of it. GREAT video, thanks!
This video is good for anyone new the fishing /spinning reels great job . Im 30 yrs old and i learned all of this on my own cause when i started fishing i was 16 and the internet was not like it is today. I had nobody to show me how to cast a bait cast reel and spinning .I learned to master them and now im a pro .When i cast people are in Awwhh cause i cast so accurate :)
I also used to close the bail with the handle. Flicking ut closed by hand is a revelation! I am just switching to braid and I will now incorporate this method. Very intelligent instructional video. Bravo.
Nice to see a video that isnt selling baitcast setups. I've fished my whole life with spinning reels and fish for everything from sunfish to pike, rivers to lakes, with just two rods and spinning reels. I came to this video because I just switched from using mono to using braided and wanted to see if their where any casting techniques that were different. And I found one thing I will need to change, I habitually close my bail with the crank, but I do stop the line with my finger and I don't have to look down to close the bail. My reason for switching to braid is because I bank fish and like to cast into weeds, lillies and tullies for bass cause they are in there and most people that bank fish avoid that like the plague. Every now and then even weedless setups get wrapped and I loose tackle that I really like. I'm hoping going from 8lb mono to 30# braid will really help with this.
+Chris Meyers will thew braid causes cuts in your fingers when you stop the line right before you close the bail? I've been having a lot of wind knots lately when casting out and I do close the bail with my hand. Any suggestion?
I'm so tired of people trying to push baitcasters down your throat. I even went out late last fall and bought one just to see what the hype was about. I put an honest effort into trying to learn them but after months of frustration and feeling like to do more fixing backlashes and fine-tuning than I do fishing, I am done with them. I'm going back to strictly spinning reels and working on techniques to get more accurate and speedy with what I am comfortable with.
Excellent video Capt. Clear concise, and on point all the way through. Time well spent is quality time and I appreciate the time you've spent developing the expertise to present a well-crafted presentation. My wife said , "nice voice too."
Thank you so much for demonstrating HOW to actually cast with the spinning reel. I knew I was doing something wrong, and now I see what it was: OVERHEAD CASTING BAD! Thanks Chris! Now to go and practice over the weekend and perfect my casting.
I like to watch this video every once in a while and every time I watched I want give it thumb up then I found that I did that already before :) Thank you very much Captain Chris Myers.
As a beginner with my first spin cast reel, and no one to teach me how to fish - this video was AMAZING. Thank you! You explained and showed everything very clearly!!
I have fished ML many times over the years-fly and spin. It is a wonderful fishery. Stay in Titusville. Eat Cuban. Drink across the street from the women's detention center with views of the Cape. Everything Chris is sharing here is critical to an efficient day. There are enough issues that can bite you in the ass and what Chris is really saying is that just because we grew up spin fishing doesn't mean we ever learned the optimal way to spin fish. All makes great sense and well presented
Fan-F-tastic. Straightforward and general information. I've been trying to find this in a video for a couple of weeks now. Have seen plenty of 'local' tips, which are great, but tend to gloss over the basics. Not helpful when no one has taught you any basics!
Ive watches hundreds if not thousands of fishing videos online. Everything from instructional to reviews to vlogs. This is the most informative video that I have watched online. I learn just about everything that I am doing it incorrect. I understand what works for you may not work for everyone, but there are a lot of issues that I am having that you showed how I might be able to correct them. I'm going to work on a few of these techniques while I am out on the water next weekend.
Omg I am so thankful for this video man. After casting my own way for so long, I never thought there was a better way. I pretty much have always done everything u showed except what seems to be the most important. I usually hold the rod with only my index finger around the trigger and held the line snug between my finger and the rod when getting ready to cast. Now i see those were two huge mistakes. I went right outside and changed up to the way you showed and instantly had better distance and accuracy. I also have to say the whipping sound is now consistent and makes me sound like a pro when I'm casting. I really can't thank u enough as Fishing is my life. Tight lines brother!!!!
Thank you Chris. I have been using a spinning reel off and on since I was kid - born in the '60's. I am (was) a fairly good caster, now I feel like a pro.
Great video. I went a little backwards having an uncle as a tournatment angler. He started me out young casting into five gallon buckets with a baitcaster. When I was finally able to hit multiple buckets he called out to me I was able to enter my first buddy tourney with him. I got my first kayak recently to fish out of and have been told a couple different times that spinning reels were preferable. So I picked up a couple and realized I had no idea how to use them. THANK YOU!
Chris, this is THE most professionally done instructive video (of any kind) that I have ever seen! Sad to say that I've been casting wrong for almost 50 years. (It should be no surprise that I rarely catch fish.) Thank you so much for taking the time to make this great video, for presenting the reel to the camera at the correct angle - so that we can see what we should be doing, and for repeating your instructions to make sure we understand it. Looking forward to learning everything I can from you. Take care, Fred :-)
I just bought a Spinning Reel Rod a few days ago, not knowing anything about fishing or using this type of rod. It seemed simple enough to use. So down to the ocean I went. I spent most of my time there untangling line, casting completely incorrectly. Thank you so much for an excellent video, very informative. My frustration has turned to eager anticipation. Thanks again !
So glad I found this video. I just switched to a spinning reel and realized I knew nothing about it. Your video helped tremendously. It had me casting almost like a pro!! Thank you!!
Chris, thanks for the tips/tricks/how-to's. I've now used your exact techniques for the past 2 fishing seasons. I must say, it's not only easier once used to it, but I've caught fish with those casts where the lure ends up in the fishes mouth the second it hits the water. With the old crappy technique, those numerous fish would have inhaled, and spit out the bait before I even got the bail closed. Plus, my shoulder doesn't hurt anymore, surprise surprise... Thanks again!
Thank you so much! I felt like such an idiot after watching this video. Beginner fisher here. Fell in love with it instantly. Even with all the problems. Can't wait to put your tips to the test!
Thank you very much for your video and time. I just retired and moved to Oregon, and have just started to learn to fish. You restate during you video what to do and that was great, as I didn't have to go back (too many times :). I am ambidextrous and this helped me figure out what do as I was casting and reeling with the same hand. So, this vid really helped me. Thank you again.
Hey man, THANKS ALOT! I've been fishing for years and never thought about these things! Cant wait for tomorrow to start practicing my new casting technique. Mike - Ft. Lauderdale
Chris, just a quick follow-up. I switched to braid on my spinning reel, and it works great. it worked so well that I put it on my bait caster reel also - it works great on that too. Thanks again - no more bird's nest and it cast further as well.
It is amazing how much I could learn in less than 15 minutes Video. So far this video is the only best one (for me) which showing how to cast a spinning reel and spinning rod. Beautiful work and many thanks is advance for all the technics which I learned and will practice in future. Muchas Gracias Chris for excellent Video, after 7 years still is the only best video (for me) to learn how to operate a spinning reel and catch more fish.
Great instructional video Chris - thanks. You make a lot of key points I have not seen yet in other TH-cam videos. You are not the first to recommend braid for spinning reels, but you "sealed the deal" - I'll be making the switch as soon as I get some braid, and I'll be trying some of your other great tips as well.
Very good video. I have a lot of bad habits (mechanics) to unlearn. This is a video I need to watch more than once, here I go to hit the replay button.
To all who have happened upon this TH-cam video --> This is an exceptionally great instructional video. Captain Chris knows exactly what he is talking about, he is easy to understand, and is very good at teaching!
wow, fished my whole life with a single handed overhead cast and closing the bail with the handle just as the lure hit the water. I also spent much time getting tangles out of my line, and got good at it. Never too old to learn so I will take a tip from a young whipper snapper professional and hopefully become rusty at untangling fishing line. Thanks for sharing, I'll subscribe.
Chris, thanks a lot for this video, I just started fishing and boy was I doing a lot of things the wrong way; no wonder I was coming back empty handed. Really appreciate you sharing this info with us, keep safe and continue with your great work.
Heckuva Job Chris! You should sell your video to the other guides in the area, lol. Most don't seem to care whether their clients are capable or not prefering to use bait instead of plastics to satisfy their guaranteed "catch or no pay" policy. Even had one do the casting for his clients!!! Nice to see that level of professionalism.
Chris you are the man! I'm on my way to Cuba and i just bought myself a Spinning Fishing Reel COM 155 Competitor,no experiance at all but after a couple of tips on youtube i fall on your vdo it's so well explanned, now i feel much more confortable and insured to go out there and do wath i learned from you. Thanks again,i'll let you know how things went!
Thank you for this information. Nobody I've fished with knew any of this information. Even many videos I've watched never showed the errors I've done, minus closing the bail which I've learned recently. No wonder I don't catch many fish.
You know I've been fishing all my life. A lot of my family were commercial fisherman, and a lot of us spend a lot of time surf casting. And I don't think I've ever had anyone, ever, point out that I should stop the line when it hits the water. But that might be the single most interesting piece of advice I've ever gotten on casting.
Awesome video! I am new to fishing (last time when 9 years old). I think I was almost doing literally everything you said NOT to do LOLS! Can't wait to get back out there and try the new tips. Thanks again.
Thanks for making this video. I feel these tips will help me eliminate some if not all of my frustrations. One of my issues is the line sometimes comes over the spool when I return my cast and it gets tangled.
OMG... so much info delivered in a nice concise video! Love it. I was doing so many things wrong and I've been fishing for years. Going out today to give your tips a solid try! Thanks man!
Wow. Thanks Chirs for the tips. Went to a wharf today to practice your meathods and after a few hours, my casting was alot better. Didn't catch anything, but at least I am casting correctly now.
It may solve the knot problem but it's a good way to break the bail spring trip mechanism. I have had it happen on multiple reels of differing models from people who cannot close it by hand. Now I leave them that way so you have to close it by hand.
I just ordered a Shimano Hyperloop 4000FD for my new UK offshore boat 8ft spinning rod (20-50g). I use multipliers exclusively - this video is really useful about method & form. Last time I used a FS was late 1970s :D Just a post to say thanks :)
Not knowing what the hell I was doing I repeatedly broke my line on casts because I believe the bail was slamming shut. At the time I thought it was because I was using a lure that was too heavy but after watching your video I am convinced that it was because the bail was slamming shut. I'm going to head out and give it another shot knowing now what I was doing wrong before. Great video, very informative.
Great video. Question.....I have problems with line twisting due to constant casting and retrieving. I have only used mono. Will braid solve this problem? How often would you replace the line if I went with braid?
Thanks a lot Chris! Yesterday I was struggling hard and yr video help me a lot and just did some practice and its way better.. i have a 2m40 rod that seems too rigid and the handle too long.. i think would be better if i change it
That reel is a Daiwa TDA 2500. They stopped making them last year. The Procyon model has replaced it. I have seeral of those and they work well but are in the $150 range. I would try the Lexa model which is around $120 or the Aird around $90 if you are looking for something a bit less expensive.
Hey! First of all thanks for the great video it is really helpful and everything is explained in great detail. I am 19 and looking to starting to fish more seriously now. I was wondering what tips you could give me for purchasing a rod and a reel, is it better to buy a set or separate parts? Are there any brands/models in particular you would suggest? Again thank you so much. Fish on!
In most large stores, the combos are usually the less expensive and lower quality reels. A good rod is gong to cost from $75-150 and a good reel about the same. I have found that the $100 an up reels last much linger and are a lot smoother. I use Falcon Coastal rods and Daiwa Reels.
Captain Myers thank You on excellent videos.A rookie fisherman like me finds these videos extremly helpful.I see some guys in my area (Croatia) keep their index finger on the spool and they throw with one hand. They claim that in this way they are more accurate, but I as a rookie think that in the long run such casting can create wrist problems plus it can make bird's nests.
Thnx a lot Captain Myers, I let them do their way,and I ll keep on learning Your way 👍 Greetings from Croatia, and once again thank You a lot for learning us to fish the right way.
Hey Chris......very good video and goods points....however as I progressed I never flipped the bail over by hand when using a spinning outfit. If I am using a lure such as buzz bait I will long cast and begin reeling the rod arm just BEFORE the bait hits the water as the bail closes automatically. The lure is actually buzzing and hitting the water at the same time which which can create an instinctive strike. Short cast into tight areas I underhand the cast like pitching a softball with a soft landing. Regardless your expertise is well noted and catching fish is what its all about.
Watch my new video on the Top 5 Casts every spinning rod angler should know - th-cam.com/video/D6dztaE3jkQ/w-d-xo.html
Nice common sense video. Wish more people would watch this so they knew what they were doing. Thanks for making this video.
My favorite video of all time. Watched it over and over.
what a difference, chris is really showing me an art of how to do this. Thumb up Chirs
You were born to instruct people on fishing. Your videos are amazing, when I come to FL I'm going fishing with you.
I am a beginner and this videos are the most helpful staff I have found on the Internet, by far. Can't thank you enough!

Best explanation on correct use of spinning reel I’ve ever seen. Watching will benefit all fishermen. Thanx.
Thanks Chris, been casting for years the Wrong way. Thanks a million.
This is the best instruction I have seen ever on proper use of a spinning reel. If some one is going out with me bringing spinning gear I do what I can to see that they watch it prior.
i'm learning to fish atm, your spinning reel casting tutorials is the best and the most comprehensive one that i've seen.
thanks for the video Chris!
i'm a beginner. I can watch this video all day. pleasure to watch. great tutorial.
This should be required learning when starting out. I've got some bad habits to straighten out and I've wasted a lot of time and missed a lot of fish because of it. GREAT video, thanks!

Best demonstration I've seen so far.

I would try 20lb. Super strong and it will cast farther. You will have a hard time breaking it
Thanks.
+Chris Meyers will thew braid causes cuts in your fingers when you stop the line right before you close the bail?

Great video. I went a little backwards having an uncle as a tournatment angler. He started me out young casting into five gallon buckets with a baitcaster. Wow! I'm glad I saw this video. I'm new to fishing and this helped me understand what area I need to improve on when casting. Thank you very much.
Great tips from someone that focused on perfecting the most efficient cast. Perfection is goood.
+Micheil Duncan Thanks
I just bought a Spinning Reel Rod a few days ago, not knowing anything about fishing or using this type of rod. It seemed simple enough to use. So down to the ocean I went. Good luck.

Chris, thanks for the tips/tricks/how-to's. I've now used your exact techniques for the past 2 fishing seasons. This was one of the best and most informative vids on how to cast a spinning reel. I can’t wait to practice!
Thanks. I also have a video for left handed casting if you prefer that. It is a slightly different technique.
Hey man, THANKS ALOT! I've been fishing for years and never thought about these things! Cant wait for tomorrow to start practicing my new casting technique. Mike - Ft. Lauderdale

Thanks Chris! I learned how to properly cast a fly from your videos and now learned some things I didn't know about spin casting.
+Chris Hamm Great! Thanks

Thanks.
Really helpful video - thanks. It's nice to see someone cover basics for beginners.
Very good video. I have a lot of bad habits (mechanics) to unlearn. This is a video I need to watch more than once, here I go to hit the replay button.
Thanks To your video I was able to take my 4 Year Old son Fishing!( First time for both him and me) you’ve helped me out a lot !🙏🏼
Glad to hear it!
Wow, I just learned that I don't do anything right. I suck.
Brian LePoidevin holy hell I'm dying laughing here. I had the SAME thought. "....no wonder I can't catch crap".
Lol me too
+Sam Omar Me three! Lol.
lol same here :) also my first rod ended up being too long and heavy
@@valentinrieuf9983 My Wife said the same thing
I'll be teaching my son how to fish ..thanks to you I've learned new rules. Thanks! *subbed*

Chris, thanks a lot for this video, I just started fishing and boy was I doing a lot of things the wrong way; no wonder I was coming back empty handed. Really appreciate you sharing this info with us, keep safe and continue with your great work.
A great video! Helping a future fisherperson helps us all! Keep up the great work and leave some lip skin for the rest of us to get a hook in!
a single movement but use up to 14mins to teach and demonstrate, many thanks to you for teaching me this casting movement
Heckuva Job Chris! You should sell your video to the other guides in the area, lol.

Do you have any advice for catching Carp in socal with a spinning rod? Bait, size and kind of hook, etc.
Hey chris nice video very helpful nice to see somebody has the patience to help out good tips boss I appreciate it
Damn good video and I have been using open face for 40 years , but your never to young to learn , Thanks Chris
Very much appreciated Chris, your explanations are in-depth and precise enough to work for me.
This is an awesome video! I go back to it over and over. Thanks Capt!
Awesome video! I am new to fishing (last time when 9 years old). I think I was almost doing literally everything you said NOT to do LOLS! Can't wait to get back out there and try the new tips. Thanks again.
Excellent teaching. You're awesome. Simply you explained me how to use fishing reel. Thank you
Thanks for making this video.
Thanks man!
Great video! I have been using spinning reels for years and have just learned some very good tips to casting more proficiently. Thanks again!
This is an excellent video, thank you. I'm just learning to fish myself, haven't fished for about 15 years, as a young lad
Thanks. While my video obviously has a flats fishing slant being able to cast well from a variety of angles is a sign of a good angler.
Please make more videos, I'm a complete beginner and would love to get into fishing as a hobby.
The Best video on spinning reel casting Bar None !!
Very informative, I've been fishing a while with spinning gear and learned a few things from your video. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Chris great information. Got a lot to learn at 66 having just taken angling up over here in UK.
Wow. Thanks Chirs for the tips. Went to a wharf today to practice your meathods and after a few hours, my casting was alot better. Didn't catch anything, but at least I am casting correctly now.

One of the best explaining videos about casting! Cheers
Last time I used a FS was late 1970s :D
Just a post to say thanks :)
Your a darn good instructor, yea I have been closing the bail with the handle,,thanks for such a great video!!Keep up the great work!!
Great tips! I have been casting the wrong way for 20 years!! I'm going to practice this method and hopefully land more fish!!!
Thanks from Newfoundland, Canada- !
good tips on the do's and dont's I never really thought about my cast I found my flaw is my finger when I let it go!! good tips
Thank you Chris I will try this in a couple days I got a day off in two days going to do some fishing thanks for all your help
Awesome! Just bought my second spinning reel. Lots to learn between this and baitcaster
Good info. Thanks. I kinda miss the old snapshot triggers and self centering bails. It sure made it easy.
Great video, great teacher. Thanks for pointing out all the common mistakes ...
Great video. Question.....I have problems with line twisting due to constant casting and retrieving. I have only used mono. Will braid solve this problem? How often would you replace the line if I went with braid?
Thanks a lot Chris! Yesterday I was struggling hard and yr video help me a lot and just did some practice and its way better.. i have a 2m40 rod that seems too rigid and the handle too long.. i think would be better if i change it
Great to see a PRO share his technique. Thanks!!
That reel is a Daiwa TDA 2500. They stopped making them last year. The Procyon model has replaced it. I have seeral of those and they work well but are in the $150 range. I would try the Lexa model which is around $120 or the Aird around $90 if you are looking for something a bit less expensive.
Awesome:) What a good video so much info on mechanics! What's a good rod for a Takara 3500, I'm fishing striper on Lake Mead?
great video. Learnt a lot and I have been fishing for decades
I use Falcon Coastal rods and Daiwa Reels.
you gave me an idea to avoid tangles..thanks a bunch for the guide..i just started learning fishing..
Been fishing 50+ years, learned something!
I have watched thousands of people cast and have never seen one who is accurate with one hand unless they are very short casts.
