  • First maple syrup boil of the new year at the log cabin maple sugar shack in the woods. The pond update on Chris's channel: • MUDDY Fish Pond Turned...
In this adventure we put our home made maple syrup evaporator to good use by boiling down fresh maple sap into maple syrup and drizzle it over fresh cooked pancakes over a wood stove.
This is about making something sweet from practically nothing, from liquid sap from a maple tree to delicious maple syrup on our wood stove. Over the course of the season we will see just how much maple syrup we can make. To make 1 liter of syrup, we need to collect and boil down 40 liters of sap. This takes a lot of time and patience to boil off most of the water to leave mostly sugar in the syrup.
Spring is really a great time to get outside and catch up on all the missed sunshine and get much needed fresh air and vitamin D from the sun.
We drill in holes in the sugar maples at an upward angle and the sap will flow anytime the temperatures change from below freezing to above freezing. The sap will stop flowing as the season wears on, so timing is critical. The sap starts off really clear, but will be richer and darker as the season goes on.
We filter our sap through a t-shirt, but you may want to use something finer like cheese clothe. We find that the extra stuff just enhances the flavor profile of the final syrup.
To make maple sugar, just keep boiling the syrup and it will boil off all the water leaving just sugar. Syrup forms at 212F or 107C and should be removed, cooled and then stored in tight containers. It can be kept frozen for a very long time, or refrigerated for a few months.
If mold forms, scoop it off and you can still eat it, but the flavor will be off.
Serve fresh maple syrup over pancakes, french toast, or just drink it straight up.
I'll show you how to tap a tree, talk about the right conditions for sap flow, the concentration of sugar in sap, how we collect and boil the sap from start to finish! I'll show you how maple syrup is made using a cheap homemade evaporator!

"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle.
Many people ask me where I am from and where I film my projects. I am from Northern Ontario, Canada, and live in an area where off-grinding is easy because I have lots of land to build on and experiment with different buildings and materials. Everything I do is to try to be more self reliant, and to depend less on others. But that doesn't mean I don't like working together with other people on projects. Knowing people who have skills is part of being self reliant, and trading skills is a great way to get more things done!

The Amish farms make maple syrup and when it boils it builds up foam and they throw in some butter and the foam disappears and the syrup gets richer and sweeter!

With your elbow , what's happening is the muscle and tendon is developing micro tears from the bone, from over use. (Years of drywalling). The band , supports the muscle and tendon and allows them to heal. This is how it was explained to me when I went through the same thing. Great video!

It's always awesome to see the Don and Kevin show, I would love to see this year your largest build on this channel ever, a huge cottage multiple bedrooms multiple levels below and above ground, completely self-reliant from the beginning and off grid.
Such a place that is large enough that your family could retire there and host major friends and family events.
No connection whatsoever to the outside world.

I think a barn/wood mill should be the priority, it will give you so many opportunities for the future in terms of content and what you will be able to build.
The grain-zeebo sounds awesome but I feel it is something that you could do later, having a working mill could help you build it even better.
Wish you all the best, looking forward to the next episode.

The key to doing this yourself at home is to plan the summer before. Materials become hard to obtain during maple season. Start by identifying your trees while the leaves are still on (see Flag of Canada for example). I started last year with three spiles and expanded this year to nine; a mix of old school metal and new plastic. I LOVE the galvanized nail to pin the bucket up vs. using the hook. That's exactly what i did to expand for this year and I like it even better than the new style buckets with lids integrated into the spile.

The elbow problem is due to the ulnar nerve being compressed. The contraption probably relieves some pressure of the nerve against the bone (elbow). I had to have a surgery for some relief. It didn't really work. We have topical lidocaine at the dollar store I use for instant relief. Hope you feel better. Great, informative vid.

A doctor told me to never agree to any tendon surgery in my arm until I could not open or close my hand. Because that would be all the use I would have after they got done with it due to where and how the tendons were tore. It's been almost fifty years since that advice and I can do more now with less pain than I could then.

I am so happy this morning! I got to watch a fabulous video from one of my favorite youtubers with my coffee!
My suggestion for the next build is the sawmill shed. I would put two walls on the sides that the weather usually comes down the hardest, a loft for dry wood storage, a solar powered fan to blow the dust away from you or a vacuum system to collect the dust and use that in the outhouse, and have a core gravel floor system to keep it from getting muddy.
I'm now going to subscribe to your brother's channel and watch the pond transformation. This way I will also be better informed of why the hell you abandon us for weeks at a time and make us think you're in a ditch somewhere trapped under a log! 🙄🤭
I think the grainzebo will be a beautiful build and I look forward to seeing that this summer. Until NEXT WEEK, 😜 be safe, stay warm, hug those beautiful girls, say hi to Don, and ask your brother if you can post videos on your channel if you do projects together! 😊

I def think you should do the sawmill shed first.

The arm wrap temporarily shortens the injured tendon. That allows the injured tendon’s attachment to not work as hard and possibly heal. I’m not a doctor, but I’ve had both tennis and golfer’s elbow that were caused by a damaged ligament, which in the end led to Tommy John’s surgery where they took a tendon from my forearm to resew a lower arm bone to the upper arm bone because my ligament that was supposed to do the job had nearly totally disintegrated.

I used to get tennis elbow from playing frisbee golf and those forearm braces work wonders. They keep your tendons in place so they do not have as much stretching and thus do not get inflamed.

I vote for sawmill infrastructure but both ideas sound great. Do the kitchen roof next.

Your Plasma, just iv it! No sleep tonight for Kevin. That elbow device is similar to the sciatic nerve device you strap around your leg, just under the knee.
