I was at this match with my Dad and brothers I remeber it well its was fantatstic. My dad taught Jon Halworth and I played with him in the same youth team (Bramhall), at the time he was alternating weekly with another goalkeeper for Ipswich Youth. It was a fantastic weekend of sport. On the Saturday Mr Frisk won the Grand National in a record time (which still stands), Palace beat Liverpool in the other semi, which we listened to on the radio on the way to the match. To top it all, later on that evening, Nick Faldo won the Masters at Augusta. What a weekend of sport.
I was at the Palace semi ... great game ... The train home was as eventful when it look like we were to play Oldham .. especially the radio commentary thought Oldham had scored a 4th
I too was at this game, glorious sunny day and as we arrived on the terraces, news got through that the Scousers had lost 4-3. United fans knew that Palace would be an easier proposition in a final than Liverpool who had recently won at Old Trafford. Barnstorming game, all for £7 on the Kippax too 😀
This is a Manc Derby really , the only place to play was Maine Rd ( I miss it so much ). Better kits, better commentary, better fucking atmosphere because we could stand up, most of all a better class of fan (working). Forgot how good the yonners were!!! Fuck Modern football.
@@timcoates1357 That isn't the same thing as Manchester, and you know it. And I don't refer to GM either, for the record. Detest the term and will continue to use Lancashire as a reference point.
Anyone wondering what led Ferguson to drop Leighton for the final replay, look at the absolute state of him for all 3 Oldham goals. All over the place.
I was at this match in the United end and have seen them in 100s of big matches but never have I been as nervous as I was for this. The Oldham spirit was amazing & it would be great to have them back in the Premiership.
Mark Brocklehurst As much as i and the rest of the supporters would love this, untill our beloved club has been bought from the current owners then get a new manager it will be a case of snakes and ladders for us,as of now we are fighting off relegation zone
Couldn't agree more. Never got a look in with Ireland until he went to MUFC. But he was the best right-back in the land for at least a year before that.
He pulled off the greatest save I've ever seen in the replay, I think it was nick Henry, I Could be wrong, a volley from a cleared corner which Leighton got fingers to, underside of crossbar and out, Oldham on top at that stage of game as well.. Oldham fans will say it crossed the line, it didn't I was almost level with the goalline, still remember it 31 years on...

What a weekend of sport.
Back in the days when the FA Cup was still special. This match was played on the same day as the palace/Liverpool 4-3 semi. Magical.
Agent of Chaos true true
What a day
I was at the Palace semi ... great game ... The train home was as eventful when it look like we were to play Oldham .. especially the radio commentary thought Oldham had scored a 4th
And the final was played at Wembley
Hence the Road to Wembley

Oldham Athletic what a team in the 90's . OAFC
That number 2 for Oldham looks a decent full back. I wonder where how the rest of his career went...
He went to Manchester United lmao
Great match. Even better commentary by the legendary Barry Davies.... "Test of his pace, now test of his finish".
baldychops and he's equalled them both!
Brilliant Barry Davies. 'This is the stuff....of schoolboy comics!'
Roger palmer would be worth a fortune now.. This guy was awesome
I was there. Oldham by far the best side on the day
No they werent...in fact Oldham played better in the reply.
It was a decent game, thought we edged it at the time but a draw was fair. We were the better side in the replay.
I was there too, so I know you're talking utter bollocks David.

Couldn't agree more, fucking all seated stadiums charging a fortune for a ticket.
Nothing Manc about Oldham. But the rest of your statement is spot on!
DShamen Oldham is in Greater Manchester?

@@DShamen well said Oldham is Lancashire not GM

He was shattered he so erratic that.
Les sealed replace him he was a better organiser.
Same in the final. All at sea on crosses
Maine Road was ideal for this Semi.
I remember watching this at my beloved Maine Road ground a cracking game.
Semi finals need to be taken away from Wembley and put back to neutral grounds.
Fucking heroes those Oldham players. Robbed in the replay. Played 66 games that season. Should have won one or possibly both domestic trophies.
Brilliant stuff. What's happened to our game?
in the middle of the Kippax for this.Great day all-round & plus the dippers losing the other Semi 😀
As a fan of Oldham I was proud of their performance but let down when I met a few of the Oldham players and found a couple of them big-heads.

I hope so Mark......still keeping the faith!
I found them big-heads as well. Especially Andy Barlow. Conceited dudes/pillocks,.
Andy Barlow took a PE lesson at my school in the late 90s and he were a right prat
Leighton's confidence was shot.
They are both a good team and what has happened to Oldham recently why have they gone down from the Premier League to lead to 2 the phone
Jim Leighton had a mare 😮
grey parrot before game watched scouse get done great times. replay weds cypress tavern after .
Jim Leighton was woeful in that game
Irwin should've played in the 1990 world cup with Ireland. Not even in the squad
Couldn't agree more. Never got a look in with Ireland until he went to MUFC. But he was the best right-back in the land for at least a year before that.
Before Sky Sports...
Has there ever been a worse keeper than Jim Leighton

Oldham were unlucky there.
God jim Leighton was utter dross....would have won 3-1 with sealy in the netts. It was depressing was that Scottish puddin in goal back then
You say that but Jon Hallworth didn't have his finest game for us either. I blame him for at least one goal, maybe two.
@@DShamen
True, but Leighton was utter pants
@@salfordnick5336 I agree, he was a shocking keeper. Guaranteed dropped bollock most weeks from Leighton.
Just another player that couldn't handle the pressure of playing for Manchester United. Looked a good keeper when playing for Scotland and Aberdeen.
Jim Leighton. Not the best.
