- My mate Joshua Weissman rated the best burger chains in America, so I decided to compare them to the best burger chains in Australia. What do you think of the results? Were you as shocked as I was?
I hope you’re enjoying these mid-week videos, something a little different that allows me to share some of my favourite stories and go a little rouge, don't worry the normal content will still go live every Sunday.

Here in California, USA, we love In-N-Out because it's so affordable. For almost 20 years they kept the price of their burgers below $1.50, and even now the pricing for everything is about half of other chains. Fresh, friendly, and a local favorite.
I’m jelly… really want to try it
That’s crazy cheap… and I live in Poland. McDouble cost more than that, mind blown.
Every meal he ordered is at least 20 dollars plus in those meals, even McDonald’s in Aus is 80 bucks for 4 people to eat pretty messed up prices and the food is pretty mid
Impressive. Nothing like that in Australia. All overpriced now.
It’s a favorite here in Arizona, too. My husband and I consider it a treat.
Biggest problem I have with our Aussie specialty burger chains is just the value proposition. Like - the burgers are good, but the cost of entry is just insane in some places and cant be justified for a 'fast food lunch' type of meal.
Honestly
Spoken like a true Australian
wym by "cost of entry"? Similar to a club entry fee? That would be insane
@yashbhatt75 no just that the burger itself cost more than a meal at a general place like kfc or mcdonalds lol. For example a bettys double is 17.50 here. A large popcorn chicken meal at kfc on the other hand is about $14 hope that explains it
I'm a Kiwi, and I've been to the USA and Aussie, a couple of times now, and it pains me to say this, but, the Aussies do have really good burgers
hahaha thanks for the honestie
I’m an American living in Nz now. I haven’t had any luck with burgers here, any recommendations ?
If New Zealand's good burgers are anything like Australia's good burgers you need to go to the burger places that are a little more expensive.....Betty's burgers in Australia are more expensive than your standard takeaway burgers like McDonald's!
Burger fuel used to be good. Depending where you are Burgers & Beers aren't too bad. Burger Wisconsin depends on the store and RE Burger is decent in Palmerston North.@@B1g_Salad
@@B1g_SaladWhat part of NZ are you in dude?
Yea Betty's Burger is by far the best burger you can get in Brisbane followed by Grill'd, my 6yo daughter and I have tried every burger place in the city and we both agree on this...
Love this format👏keep it coming🤩
Chef Andy giving the people the content they want 👏🙌
anything he does is the content i want
The randomness of topics is very nice honestly. Hope to see more, Andy! Maybe something like comparing Australian Diners to American Diners (and I mean the local mom/pop hole in the wall diners and not the commercialized ones).
Are "Australian Diners" even a thing? "Diners" aren't really a thing in New Zealand (of course we have some, probably some created by American immigrants, etc) but they aren't really a significant part of our culture.
Uhhh yeah sorry mate we dont have diners in Australia.
I’ve noticed first you have different taste pallet than most people but also you didn’t order in n out right. I think most of your subscribers disagree with your ratings on the burgers chains
We don’t have “diners” that’s an american thing
The closest we have in comparison to diners would be pub food. Which can be pretty awesome.
Betty's burgers is definitely in the top 5 chains here in Oz. The other two are not even close. Burger Project was the best chain until Neil Perry decided to cut his losses early during covid. Not exactly a surprise considering the raw ingredients he was using (cape grim beef etc) Securing the high turnover he needed at those prices was always a big ask.
What's your too 5? I just realised Varsity, Royals, Hoodburger and Meat & Bun are all Perth exclusives! East coast is missing out.
@@MisterF_1984hoodburger has to be the best burger I've had!
I loved Burger Project burgers! So sad it closed down.
Burger Project was fantastic. That place got me through my first 2 years of University at Macquarie Uni. Used to get it for lunch once a week after class.
200 aud 😂😂😂 = 400 nzd
This was a very interesting video. Well done Andy! Cant wait to see whats coming next
Glad you enjoyed it
Hey yeah, love the vid format, the topic, & the cropped speech which quickens things along. Making me hungry mate.
I was going to have a healthy bowl of salad for dinner, now I'm on the way to a local burger joint. thanks andy
You should do local takeaway shop burgers in Aus for a video.
Yes I would love to see this
Love the format. It's nice to see an actual chef doing food reviews!
Perhaps not burgers tho
Great vid Andy the new format was great.
Killer content, I am such a burger nerd and love seeing stuff like the burger culture in Aus. Burger Urge looked awesome, but the tomato did make me audibly laugh. Assessment of In-N-Out is pretty spot on, I personally can't get around the price of Shake Shack, it really deters me from eating there but it is good. The midwest US has a solid offering with a spot called Culvers, and the south is all Whataburger. Thank you for the video!
Hahah this is awesome. :) Love the dedication!
I got to say though, something like this is probably subject to a fair amount of palate bais. One thing I noticed in the US is that everything tastes a bit different and that taste could arguably seem 'nicer' to somebody who lives there. The pervasion of 'sweetness' is a good example. Everything is sweet. . .it's hard to actually find bread without a bunch of added sugar - which to us in Oz sounds crazy. Even their Dry red wines still exhibit a great deal more sweetness than we expect from ours here at home. Perhaps an American would score our burgers lower because the taste profile isn't what they are used to and its been designed for Australia's desire for more savoury flavours. . . 🤷♂
Betty’s is definitely up there, really enjoyed the texture of the patty. I had In n out at a few locations in the states, the one in Vegas was ok but it was a really busy restaurant so felt abit like a conveyer belt system, was as much care taken with everything. Tried it again in San Diego, this store was near a military base and heavily frequented by military members and there seemed to be abit more care and attention. One of the fave places in Sydney is Chubby Buns which is a food truck but has fixed locations, but different style burger as they’re thicker patties grilled over charcoal but I’m a big fan
Loving this new format and can't wait for other take away cuisines. I prefer a burger from your local fish and chip shop
Fish and chip shop burger with the lot, can't beat it for value.
Love this type of video! More please!
I like the technical almost scientific assessment of these burgers by a skilled tradesman chef. Theres a definite method and level of effort needed to get a burger right. Nice one chef.
One of the glories of In N Out is that you can ask to have the fries "well-cooked" and then they are divine. I also ask for extra packets of their burger sauce to dip them in. So, so good!
We shouldn't have to ask specifically for the fries to be cooked the way they SHOULD be cooked. If in-n-out were decent they'd just cook stuff correctly to begin with
“light-well” is the best imho. it’s just the perfect crunchiness
I have become a better chef for my family because of you. Thank you Andy. Great video! Really enjoyed this ranking video :) -Jacob from San Antonio, TX
Like that format! :)
love the format Andy, keep doing more food exploring, you're a great host! big ups from Auckland
Loved this!!!!
Great vid Andy. Ngl Grill’d is bloody good not surprised with the result here.
I especially loved seeing Andy goofing around at the end!
Love this series pls do another one
Yum love the long pickles which I could reach through and grab the last one yum!
Love your content Andy on all social channels
Yeah Canada! 🇨🇦 Must have been my begging 😂 Don’t know why we were the last in the world, we’re right beside the US, although their population is 10 times ours. And we were part of the same dominion with Australia. Anyway already got my books. 😁 Love the cookbook ❤️
Betty’s is my fave. Super consistent always.
When I was in Australia I don’t remember hitting any fast food burger places. But all the burgers I had at any take away shop was way better than any burger here in the US. I think you all just have better quality beef which makes a huge difference.
But steak and shake has the best fries imo
Local fisho burgers are lacking consistency from place to place, but the individual stores can be consistently awesome.
But for a traveller, it's like going to Maccas one day, KFC the next.... it's all over the shop.
When you find a good one, you stick with it.
Loved this review...👏
Love this. More please
Your score In-and-Out Fries is spot on. We go there to get the burgers only. Then get fries at McDs on the way home.
Steak and Shake was one of my first jobs. You can make something like 50 burgers at a time on their flat top with their meat-puck smashburger system
Have to do “animal style” for the double double at in n out. Caramelized onions and they fry the burger in mustard.
As a fan of mustard, animal style is pretty much mandatory for me.
If that's the case, it sounds like In n Out is trash and the only way to half enjoy it is to get them to fry it in sauce. Not the sign of a good burger.
Great video!
As an Aussie, I've never seen or heard of Betty's Burgers. Looking at their website, I guess they do fit the definiton of 'chain', but pretty small. I've had the other two, and you're right, they're not bad, but as I'm sure is the same everywhere, they don't even compare to my non-chain favourite burger place (Just Poppy's, Riverhills, Brisbane). Something about chains not being able to scale properly I guess.
Just Poppy’s is pretty good their chips are really good. They have so many types of burgers on the menu
right, and putting them head to head with McDonald's isn't fair to Betty's or McDonalds lol
That was fun! Ever coming to Europe? There's soooo many great food options here!
I’ll be there next year ✌️ thanks
Love Betty’s the shroom burger and of course the beef burger! Their beef burger is the closest we can get to In and Out from LA. Strawberry milkshake from Betty’s also good as well my daughter loves it! In and Out animal fries and beef burger love it as well and price pretty reasonable. I would also want to add Fergburger from Queenstown NZ, the burger is so juicy and onion rings were so thick! We had a teary eye while eating Fergburger 😅😂
Gotta check out smaller, local or regional places. Fast food is okay - the big thing is getting something reliable and consistent. The small local places really make our burger culture what it is!
You could say the same for Australia as well, in this video he just rates the fast food chain aspects
Love your content! If you are ever in Perth we would love to have you try our burgers at Smash Grill. Owner and chef from Chicago, Illinois and made in Australia.
'Under seasoned' has got to be the catch phrase for everything you were eating in USA. Fun video, thank you! And to be fair, aligns with my experiences from travelling in the USA from Australia too ;-)
Interesting. When you say under-seasoned, are you saying it's lacking salt, or that it's lacking other seasonings? Fast food burgers aren't something I'd consider lacking salt.
Its not necessarily lack of salt itself but how the salt is incorporated into the dish. Depending on what kind of salt is used and when it’s added, it could just be adding sodium without adding flavor.
I assume everything in the US is oversweet and oversalted. I'm surprised Andy said it was under seasoned.
@@McNasty43 When you're talking about burger seasoning, it would be salt and pepper, maybe MSG and potentially a couple others. He's talking about intensity of the seasoning. I've been travelling recently and I also had a Japanese girl come stay with me (in the same town as Andy lives!). The general consensus is that Australian food is heavily seasoned while overseas palettes are 'more subtle'.
Yeah I was confused and assume AUs like really crusty and peppered things now. Makes sense why brisket is popular there I hear?
Chef Andy always delivering 🙌🙌
I try
@@andy_cooks it's always great chef 🤝
Honestly my fav burger out of both countries franchises is 5 Guys. The best I had in Sydney and New York. I don't get the fries just 2 x Double Cheese Burgers with grilled onions, mushrooms, lettuce, mayo, mustard and pickles. Very expensive (in Oz) but worth it imo. Many say In N Out are good for the price but aren't anything special when comparing to 20 dollar plus burgers. Bettys I found the buns too soft and feels like a greasy mess. Each to their own.
5 Guys is super expensive, spent like $75 for two people, only for two burgers, a shared chips and 2 shakes
Five Guys has been my favorite spot when I lived in NY. Although I stopped going there and went once in a blue moon cause it became too expensive. I also like Smashburger and BurgerFi, these two chains are rare and will probably won’t get mentioned.
@@twowheelsandcroissant Yeah I think I paid $26 for just the burger
I like Five Guys best, too. I probably go about 4 to 5 times a year. (Which is more than I go to any other burger place). I get a single patty, cheese, bacon, pickles, mustard, and sometimes mushrooms or onions, on the lettuce wrap. Usually don't bother with any sides or beverage, especially since it seems they charge for water (which comes from the same dispenser as the soda), and I don't care for soda. But I do love their fries - I just don't always want them because the burger itself is generally filling enough.
Great video Andy! Betty's Burgers are the best!!! And Grill'd's are a good second!
Betty's is top 5. Best "chain" burger in Australia was Burger Project but Neil Perry decided to cut his losses early during covid. Not exactly a surprise considering he didn't skimp on the raw ingredients (cape grim etc) and needed high turnover to make it profitable.
LOL I basically had the exact same thing for lunch from Betty's Burgers today. They do good work.
Betty’s is so good, I love the fried chicken burgers
This is such a good video
When I order fries I ask for crispy fries and salt on the side then you get hot fries ask for salt yourself. The best fries are at checkers yummy. Great video chef Andy I loved the video. You are too cool 😊😊😊
I would love to see your review of Whataburger and Five Guys!
Should definitely try Broken Hearts Burger Club next time you’re in Brisbane! They do an incredible smash burger
Oh Yes, that was a fun video! Guess I'll need to visit Australia and see for myself! Loved the variety of this format!
Thanks 🙏
Yeah, Betty's Burgers has been my go-to after finding them one time. They're so solid and consistent. I'm glad you rated them so high.
Hey Andy long time watcher first time commenter 👍
if you ever come to Darwin in the Northern Territory you have to try pattyshack burger bar I think they have the best smashed burger in Australia haha big statement I know but I’m an ex chef and I think they have the best burger I have ever tasted, also there buffalo chicken loaded fries are spot on as well very consistent 👌 anyway bro love your work love your content I’ve made lots of your recipes at home keep it up ya legend 🍻
Best video you've done! Go Grill'd!
Betty’s Burgers is also in the US. I live 5 minutes away from one in Aptos
You can't compare In-N-Out to things like Shake Shack or any of those Australian chains because they looked like they were on a whole 'nother level. In-N-Out is from the era when the only other chains were McDonalds, Burger King, Jack-In-The-Box, and Wendy's. That's who you compare them to, no others.
Good point. Also depends on who cooked it as well. What if it's a 15 year olds first day. So many variables.
I've always rated Grill'd very highly. Their burgers and ingredients are super tasty. You don't feel like crap after eating it. Somehow you feel like you have eaten something healthy, while satisfying those fast food needs
Depends on the Grilld the ones closer to Sydney CBD aren't the best but penriths and Parramatta aren't bad
@@JesusChrist-ze1mb ah yep, I'm in Brisbane and haven't had that issue yet
Hey andy have you ever had fuel burgers in nz? We frothed em when we where there a few years ago
Its definitely interesting seeing how things scored considering i have worked both grilld and bettys burgers, though if i had to honestly review which one's better it would be bias so fair enough on the scoring. Decent reviews
you should do a small locally owned restaurant burger between AU and NZ, we've got some banger local burgers here in NZ and AU does too. would be a good watch
OMG agree, local burger joints have the best burgers
Excellent Andy
Sam's Takeaway at Woolloongabba is a family run by two folk in their 70s and make a great burger!
PS. Their vietnamese springrolls are megavalue and lush.
You needed to go to Carina (unless there is one closer to you) and grab yourself a Getta Burger. I know it isn't a large chain, but well worth the drive!
Second this. And Carina not the others which tend to be a bit on the uurrgghhh side
I voted for Betty’s burgers too! Looked awesome
Great video Andy, if you ever get to Dublin Ireland, you need to have a Bunsen Burger, 9.5/10
My favorite fast food burger in USA is Culvers. Pretty regional chain though. Saw the most of them in the midwest when i lived in Michigan
Gotta come to Michigan and Wisconsin. Halo Burger in Michigan and Culver's just about anywhere in the midwest these days.
One aspect i would have loved to see is a price adjustment to the score. The aussie visits were an AU$30 lunch. In and out in dollarbucks was about 18 bucks, the second one about 14 bucks AUD. Last US one... 33 bucks
Agree. These days cost is everything
Hi Andy, can you do an episode on how to use MSG? As in, how much is needed acrossaybe popular recipes? I live in Poland and want to buy but I am unsure how much of it to use once I get it.. thanks !!
I would suggest coming to Canada and try Harvey's. You can make your own toppings and how you want it.
U got the in & out 👑 😂
When I go to In - n - Out I order my fries "well done" so they cook them a bit more. The food is good and fresh.
Now that you mention it I do like Betty’s Burger in Parramatta. I’ve been there a few times over the years and have always liked the burgers. I can’t remember anything wrong with the French fries. Another great franchise place is Cali burger although they are an American chain. Their classic burger is cheaper than Betty at $10.
If you ever come to Perth mate, i'll take you to a burger place that has won numerous awards. As for In N Out,always order the Double Double, with the Works,Animal style, best way to have one.
Gonna grab your book if I see one in Canada
Had my first Betty's last night out in about in North Sydney. Had the spicy chicken - hands down great burger that looked like time and attention went into its preparation. Beautiful stuff. Fries were average.
Andy, next time you're in the states you should give Five Guys a try. Not necessarily a fast food spot, but it's miles above any of the places you stopped by in the US in this video.
Love Betty's Burgers, Shake Shack was my favourite in america too.
I am not surprised by the midweek video drop. I am more surprised that I am watching this while I have not eaten any food yet.
Same for me.
Betty’s Burger is hands down one of the best burger joints I’ve ever had. Ferg Burger in Queenstown, New Zealand is up there also.
The thing about about "in n out" is that though they don't have the best burger they are half the price of most burgers on the list. So for me if an " in n out" burger is as half as good as the others (which it far exceeds) it is still a better burger.
Def got to try a “dead hippie” at MeatLiquor in London when your next there 💪🏻🍔
Thank you for the mid-week content! But don't overdo it, I see a lot of TH-camrs get overburned uploading too much. Take care
Thanks, will do!
Like these videos Andy and the other stuff too.
Should have tried Whataburger when you were in Texas. The bomb!
I had In n Out when I was in the US about 7 years ago. I thought it was good. I can't say I loved the animal style fries. I got the double double but I really wanna try the 4x4.
In Australia you chose 3 x A grade burger restaurants, in the US you only chose 1 x A grade burger restaurant, the other 2 are b grade first food joints.
Mate you need to try broken hearts burger club in Brisbane.. Aussie version of the LA Smash burgers.. 👌👌
Try Whataburger next time you're in the US, Andy. Great video!
Exactly! Way better than all three that he tried
I'm not sure why, because Americans love fries, but they're kind of an afterthought in most of our fast food restaurants. Also lack of seasoning seems to be a through-line for the American spots, which I can attest to, which is why I always have Cajun seasoning handy when possible.
We loooove our fries in Australia. It comes as a side with _everything_. Furthermore, Australians LOVE strong seasoning. I recently spent 2 months in Japan and noticed that everything was severely under-seasoned, meanwhile a Japanese student came to Australia and she said the seasoning was overwhelming. I wonder if Americans just have a subtler palette like the Japanese. Andy would be used to Australian levels of seasoning which could bring down the American scores.
@@Zei33 agree that we season our chips heavily. espcially if they are thick cut. places like snitz and grill'd have their signature seasoning which is absolutely delicious. japan has these shake shake packages for their fries in Maccas if you want extra flavour
Betty’s is my fave Aussie franchise, just for consistency I’ve never had a bad burger from them and they are always solid
Double-Double Animal Style w/ chopped chilis is the right way to experience In-N-Out
That 2nd one is a first level Big Mac. Two all beef Pattie’s, extra sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, all on a ….
You going to come over to kiwi land for the Burger Fuel & disappointment of Burger Wisconsin? I'm not sure if we have any other national chains other than those. Editing to note that there's Burger Burger which has 8 outlets so I guess that counts as a national chain given they're in both islands :)
Grill'd Wagyu Wunder is incredible - beef, cheese, pickles, onion, mustard, tomato, mayo - my favour burger. If you want a softer bun go without sesame seeds.
Creaming soda float looked a bit like the old fashioned aussie spiders of soft drink with a scoup of ice cream
Nooooooo you didn't get the In n Out burger animal style. They caramelize and chop up the onions while mixing it with the burger sauce to make a spread instead of giving you a huge slice of raw onion. Thats like the whole point of getting an In n Out burger 😭
They should really just put it on the menu. Nothing is secret anymore.
Someone should have educated our fav Aussie Chef how to order @ In-N-Out.... It is an acquired skill.
I see this same comment on every TH-cam video that reviews their burgers. I don't even have one of these near me. And I know to order it this way out of exposure. It makes me think that this is done either out of ignorance in not doing the homework. Or intentionally, to spark people to comment and help with the algorithm.
If its that good why doesnt it come standard? Genuinely curious.
Oh and ive never heard of an "animal style" before, just to throw that out there.
@Hannah_The_Heretic it would be the equivalent to changing the big Mac or Whopper after a special order version of it becomes popular. Every chain has a classic that they're synonymous with. Changing that would mean losing that product association and brand recognition.
