Betty's burgers is definitely in the top 5 chains here in Oz. The other two are not even close. Burger Project was the best chain until Neil Perry decided to cut his losses early during covid. Everything is sweet. . .it's hard to actually find bread without a bunch of added sugar - which to us in Oz sounds crazy. Even their Dry red wines still exhibit a great deal more sweetness than we expect from ours here at home. Perhaps an American would score our burgers lower because the taste profile isn't what they are used to and its been designed for Australia's desire for more savoury flavours. . . 🤷♂
One of the glories of In N Out is that you can ask to have the fries "well-cooked" and then they are divine. I also ask for extra packets of their burger sauce to dip them in. So, so good!
We shouldn't have to ask specifically for the fries to be cooked the way they SHOULD be cooked. If in-n-out were decent they'd just cook stuff correctly to begin with

Honestly my fav burger out of both countries franchises is 5 Guys. The best I had in Sydney and New York. I don't get the fries just 2 x Double Cheese Burgers with grilled onions, mushrooms, lettuce, mayo, mustard and pickles. Very expensive (in Oz) but worth it imo. Many say In N Out are good for the price but aren't anything special when comparing to 20 dollar plus burgers. Bettys I found the buns too soft and feels like a greasy mess. Each to their own.
Five Guys has been my favorite spot when I lived in NY. Although I stopped going there and went once in a blue moon cause it became too expensive. I also like Smashburger and BurgerFi, these two chains are rare and will probably won’t get mentioned.
I like Five Guys best, too. I probably go about 4 to 5 times a year. (Which is more than I go to any other burger place). I get a single patty, cheese, bacon, pickles, mustard, and sometimes mushrooms or onions, on the lettuce wrap. Usually don't bother with any sides or beverage, especially since it seems they charge for water (which comes from the same dispenser as the soda), and I don't care for soda. But I do love their fries - I just don't always want them because the burger itself is generally filling enough.
Hi Andy, can you do an episode on how to use MSG? As in, how much is needed acrossaybe popular recipes? I live in Poland and want to buy but I am unsure how much of it to use once I get it.. thanks !!
Gotta check out smaller, local or regional places. Fast food is okay - the big thing is getting something reliable and consistent. The small local places really make our burger culture what it is!
I have become a better chef for my family because of you. Thank you Andy. Great video! Really enjoyed this ranking video :) -Jacob from San Antonio, TX
Yeah Canada! 🇨🇦 Must have been my begging 😂 Don’t know why we were the last in the world, we’re right beside the US, although their population is 10 times ours. And we were part of the same dominion with Australia. Anyway already got my books. 😁 Love the cookbook ❤️
Are those first two places only a Melbourne thing? I live in Sydney and have lived in multiple cities around Australia other than Melbourne and I've never heard of them.
'Under seasoned' has got to be the catch phrase for everything you were eating in USA. Fun video, thank you! And to be fair, aligns with my experiences from travelling in the USA from Australia too ;-)
Interesting. When you say under-seasoned, are you saying it's lacking salt, or that it's lacking other seasonings? Fast food burgers aren't something I'd consider lacking salt.
Its not necessarily lack of salt itself but how the salt is incorporated into the dish. Depending on what kind of salt is used and when it’s added, it could just be adding sodium without adding flavor.
@@McNasty43 When you're talking about burger seasoning, it would be salt and pepper, maybe MSG and potentially a couple others. He's talking about intensity of the seasoning. I've been travelling recently and I also had a Japanese girl come stay with me (in the same town as Andy lives!). The general consensus is that Australian food is heavily seasoned while overseas palettes are 'more subtle'.
I agree that Grill'd is always consistently good, and actually i really love the chips, especially with the creamy sauce option. My experience with American take away is similar, not as good quality as Australia. But I do love the protein style option at In n Out Burger. I really wish Australia would take hold of this concept! Lastly, the best burgers I've had are at Andrews Burgers in Albert Park, Vic. They're so good!!
Totally agree with Grill'd. I've had Grill'd in many different places around the place (Cairns, GC, Gosford, Melbourne and Adelaide) and if you order the same burger, it is consistently good in each and every place you visit. Betty's is not as consistent.
It's a bit biased, an Aussie comparing Australian burgers to American ones. I also think it's a bit skewed because the burger joints in the US (excluding Shake Shack) are proper FAST food, drive-through joints. You won't find a Betty's or Grill'd in Australia that has that similar level of service aimed at efficiency and speed, so of course I'd definitely expect the quality to also be higher with more time spent. Not to mention, the prices of those Australian burgers weren't discussed 👀. All that being said, as an American in Aus for years now, if you made a fair equivalent comparison -- say US McDonalds to Aus McDonalds -- Australia's beef patty wins.
Good choice of burger joints, but it's sad you didn't also try Five Guys. I would've been really interested to see how you rated it against In N' Out ;)
If that's the case, it sounds like In n Out is trash and the only way to half enjoy it is to get them to fry it in sauce. Not the sign of a good burger.
Andy Portnoy 😂😂😂 1 bite everyone knows the rules. In all honesty I was so disappointed when I went to LA. We are fkn spoilt in Aus. Our beef above all is that much better. And Betty's is the best for me!
I totally agree regarding the In n Out fries. They use Kennebec potatoes which have that weird mealy texture you disliked, as well as an odd flavor. It's crazy to me that they haven't switched to Russet potatoes, since it's widely agreed upon that their fries need improvement. I disagree with you on the In n Out burger bun though. It's my favorite aspect of their burger (Other than the remarkably low price of it). Everything else about the burger is pretty standard, nothing special.
Also crazy how he’s comparing in n out to those other “fast food” Australian burger spots. All of the Australian burger spots are twice the price of an in n out burger
You can't compare In-N-Out to things like Shake Shack or any of those Australian chains because they looked like they were on a whole 'nother level. In-N-Out is from the era when the only other chains were McDonalds, Burger King, Jack-In-The-Box, and Wendy's. That's who you compare them to, no others.
As someone that worked in Grill'd for 4 years about 10 years ago, I can say I'd always go back. Mainly because I know everything is cut fresh every day before opening. Beetroot sliced, carrot grated, onions sliced (OH MY GOD THE TEARS I'VE CRIED FOR 7X 30CM2 BOWLS OF ONIONS), and avo's smashed etc. They've definitely improved their chips since I worked there, the crunch is much better. Much better than hearing people who worked at maccas say 'NEVER GO THERE AGAIN'
Nooooooo you didn't get the In n Out burger animal style. They caramelize and chop up the onions while mixing it with the burger sauce to make a spread instead of giving you a huge slice of raw onion. Thats like the whole point of getting an In n Out burger 😭
I see this same comment on every TH-cam video that reviews their burgers. I don't even have one of these near me. And I know to order it this way out of exposure. It makes me think that this is done either out of ignorance in not doing the homework. Or intentionally, to spark people to comment and help with the algorithm.
@Hannah_The_Heretic it would be the equivalent to changing the big Mac or Whopper after a special order version of it becomes popular. Every chain has a classic that they're synonymous with. Changing that would mean losing that product association and brand recognition.
You can order onions at shake shack, you just have to ask. I recommend a double patty shroom stack with raw onions to anyone. It’s the only thing worth the $ at Shake Shack in my opinion. Maybe throw herb mayo on it.
In n out fries (not chips) should be ordered "well done" for the crispy version. Just something the locals know about. Also the burger can be customized to your liking. Basic In n Out is just okay. Customized In n Out is amazing!
Well done in-in-out fries are basically hollow. A good fry has a nice fluffy interior, and if you get them well done, the interior just kind of evaporates. The problem with in-n-out fries is that they're not double fried. Other fast food joints have fries that are par-cooked and frozen.
One strength about Australian food is that it's substantially healthier, as the ingredients are more fresh (despite being injected with chemicals to prolong it's life), and the fast food doesn't contain an abundance of chemicals, preservatives and artificial flavourings
as a pro tip, when you go to in-n-out you need to ask for your fries "well done" and salt them yourself. Especially if you get them animal style. Well done fries are a must at in-n-out, they'll give you that crunch and consistency you're looking for
That doesn't really speak of the quality of In-and-Out, don't it? They could just change the standard instead of having you customize each order you get.
I think they just don't want to alter their formula too much. They're about a consistent experience every time you go. I was surprised they even adopted the tap-to-pay terminals. @@oneblacksun
The thing about about "in n out" is that though they don't have the best burger they are half the price of most burgers on the list. So for me if an " in n out" burger is as half as good as the others (which it far exceeds) it is still a better burger.
Yeah, price matters. While Shake Shack is objectively superior to In-n-out, in-n-out is so cheap that it's hard to justify dropping at least DOUBLE the price at Shake Shack. 2 people can get a burger, fries, and a drink at in-n-out for less than $30, whereas you're gonna drop at least 50 bucks at Shake Shack, especially if both of you want a double.
No to the hell it is not!!😂😂 soggy ass buns, over priced, wrapped in tinfoil like I’m in a soup kitchen. The only thing they have going for them is their fries and they are still hit and miss.
@@isambo400 maybe it's a location thing..the one I always go to is nothing like you described..the buns are always fresh and toasted not soggy at all..the patty is done well and the fries are always made right in front of you...crispy goodness
Andy, next time you're in the states you should give Five Guys a try. Not necessarily a fast food spot, but it's miles above any of the places you stopped by in the US in this video.
Betty's is top 5. Best "chain" burger in Australia was Burger Project but Neil Perry decided to cut his losses early during covid. Not exactly a surprise considering he didn't skimp on the raw ingredients (cape grim etc) and needed high turnover to make it profitable.
So as a So Cal born person living in Aus i have two faults. In N Out you want animal style burger and fries. It is loved due to its freshness for the price. With your Bettys order, it has bacon and you didnt get a burger with their burger sauce. I rate them quite highly tbh. But fantastic job on the vid and much love ❤️.
Of the burgers Ive had around the place although NOT the US, more so Japan, Singapore, France, Italy, Malaysia, NZ I hate to admit a double 1/4 pounder from McD's is up there for pure beef hit -----------for what I like in a burger-------. Fergburger in Queenstown NZ is probably the best Ive had for pure quality and range.
In Australia you chose 3 x A grade burger restaurants, in the US you only chose 1 x A grade burger restaurant, the other 2 are b grade first food joints.
You needed to go to Carina (unless there is one closer to you) and grab yourself a Getta Burger. I know it isn't a large chain, but well worth the drive!
Kinda Funny but I live in America and out of the 3 you tried I have only heard of 1(In-and-out). My favorite is 5 guys. it is like a subway(you pick your toppings/sauce) and they fry their fries in peanut oil. I love a good, crispy, seasoned fry and 5 guys are not but the flavor of the cajun fries is amazing! Love your videos!
This was a great break from the usual recipe vids which are also awesome! It trips me out how similar but different our lingo is when it comes to food! Sauces = ketchup. Chips = fries. Salad = lettuce. So coo!
Grill'd Wagyu Wunder is incredible - beef, cheese, pickles, onion, mustard, tomato, mayo - my favour burger. If you want a softer bun go without sesame seeds.
If you ever come to Perth mate, i'll take you to a burger place that has won numerous awards. As for In N Out,always order the Double Double, with the Works,Animal style, best way to have one.
Yea I'm not a fan of any "fast food" burgers here in the USA. I really think that if you want a good burger here you have to go to a Sports bar, dive bar, diner or casual dining place to find one. Fast food here in the States is all quantity and speed over quality and it shows. By casual dining I mean anything that is in between a fast food place and a restaurant. I'd say Steak N Shake, Red Robin, Portillos, or Five guys would be good examples though Red Robin is more of a chain restaurant like Apple Bee's or Chillis.
My favorite burgers would be mighty fine and PTerry's in Austin tx. Currently live in Pittsburgh which has a great place called Moonlit burgers but it isn't really fast food which makes me miss the austin spots.
I'm American and have always found the "nicer" fast food burger joints like In-N-Out and Five Guys' burgers to be under-seasoned. Five Guys doesn't salt their meat at all, so you end up with less-than-seasoned beef and too much unseasoned salad. I'm not saying that's bad; with the cheese it's a tasty combo, but for me it could be better. Maybe they're trying to be a bit healthier?
Next time at in n out just order a double double animal style(no one I know gets the raw onions) and order the fries extra crispy. (You can order them cooked however you want.) My go to is the Triple meat animal style extra sauce and and animal style fries extra crispy with no cheese(so good)
Sam's Takeaway at Woolloongabba is a family run by two folk in their 70s and make a great burger! PS. Their vietnamese springrolls are megavalue and lush.
I live in Australia and am a Burger lover. My job requires me to travel to the USA multiple times a year. My USA favourite by miles is In N Out Burger . The Quality and Pricing beats Australia Hands Down. The Double Double is not my favourite selection , the single Patty Classic is tastier. You can choose the uncooked or cooked onion for your burger when your order at No charge. The Shakes at In N Out are made from real cream. My favourite Australian Burger is Betty's Burger Classic which tastes pretty much the same as In N Out but it is way more expensive than In N Out when you factor the Aus$ to US$ Exchange rate.
When I order fries I ask for crispy fries and salt on the side then you get hot fries ask for salt yourself. The best fries are at checkers yummy. Great video chef Andy I loved the video. You are too cool 😊😊😊
I'll give a shoutout to Broken Hearts Burger Club (double smash burger). It has mixed reviews online based on location but myself and the kids think it's another notch above Bettys Burger which was there #1 previously.
You going to come over to kiwi land for the Burger Fuel & disappointment of Burger Wisconsin? I'm not sure if we have any other national chains other than those. Editing to note that there's Burger Burger which has 8 outlets so I guess that counts as a national chain given they're in both islands :)

You could say the same for Australia as well, in this video he just rates the fast food chain aspects
Great vid Andy the new format was great.
Betty’s is my fave Aussie franchise, just for consistency I’ve never had a bad burger from them and they are always solid
I assume everything in the US is oversweet and oversalted. I'm surprised Andy said it was under seasoned.
Yeah I was confused and assume AUs like really crusty and peppered things now. Makes sense why brisket is popular there I hear?
Yum love the long pickles which I could reach through and grab the last one yum!
Betty’s is my fave. Super consistent always.
@@userisalex I've actually never tried Betty's Burgers but probably will soon after seeing this video
@@katesmith8424 Definitely give it a go, have to try things at least once right?
@@userisalex when it comes to burgers, yes for sure lol. One of my friend's told me they've never known a female to love burgers so much 😂
@@katesmith8424 That is a good thing! You need to enjoy life while you can and that means eating burgers :)
What's the best burger in America ? In your opinion how does bettys and grilld compare.
Prices in Australia more expensive because Australia government crooks more taxes & regulations to pay
Good choice of burger joints, but it's sad you didn't also try Five Guys. I would've been really interested to see how you rated it against In N' Out ;)
Next time! ✌️
@andy_cooks Sorry to say, Five Guys is over-rated and inconsistent. Not much flavor or char.
There's five guys in Australia, so technically not exclusive
5 Guys is crazy good. Had 3 times here in Sydney and NYC. Best I've had.
Betty’s Burgers is also in the US. I live 5 minutes away from one in Aptos
Have to do “animal style” for the double double at in n out. Caramelized onions and they fry the burger in mustard.
As a fan of mustard, animal style is pretty much mandatory for me.
Yeah, Betty's Burgers has been my go-to after finding them one time. They're so solid and consistent. I'm glad you rated them so high.
Good point. Also depends on who cooked it as well. What if it's a 15 year olds first day. So many variables.
They should really just put it on the menu. Nothing is secret anymore.
Someone should have educated our fav Aussie Chef how to order @ In-N-Out.... It is an acquired skill.
I see this same comment on every TH-cam video that reviews their burgers. I don't even have one of these near me. And I know to order it this way out of exposure. It makes me think that this is done either out of ignorance in not doing the homework. Or intentionally, to spark people to comment and help with the algorithm.
If its that good why doesnt it come standard? Genuinely curious.
Oh and ive never heard of an "animal style" before, just to throw that out there.
@@McNasty43 You are describing "very well done" fries which are dessicated. well done is just crispy
Nooo Andy didn’t go to five guys!! That place is great and my favorite burger joint.
One strength about Australian food is that it's substantially healthier, as the ingredients are more fresh (despite being injected with chemicals to prolong it's life), and the fast food doesn't contain an abundance of chemicals, preservatives and artificial flavourings
Steak and Shake was one of my first jobs. You can make something like 50 burgers at a time on their flat top with their meat-puck smashburger system
as a pro tip, when you go to in-n-out you need to ask for your fries "well done" and salt them yourself. Especially if you get them animal style. Well done fries are a must at in-n-out, they'll give you that crunch and consistency you're looking for
That doesn't really speak of the quality of In-and-Out, don't it? They could just change the standard instead of having you customize each order you get.
@@oneblacksun I completely agree
I think they just don't want to alter their formula too much. They're about a consistent experience every time you go. I was surprised they even adopted the tap-to-pay terminals. @@oneblacksun
The thing about about "in n out" is that though they don't have the best burger they are half the price of most burgers on the list. So for me if an " in n out" burger is as half as good as the others (which it far exceeds) it is still a better burger.
If you do more of these fast food reviews I'd like to see price mentioned too
I agree, price should always be in the dicussion. I think @TheCNSR does this the best with his ratings of chicken shops in London being the pengest!
My favorite fast food burger in USA is Culvers. Pretty regional chain though. Saw the most of them in the midwest when i lived in Michigan
You need to ask for them to do an extra crispy fry! They will do that for In-N-Out.
He needs to ask them to make the burger animal style lol
I especially loved seeing Andy goofing around at the end!
Excellent video! But hands down the best burger in the US is Five Guys!!!
If by best burger you mean over-compensate with 8 pounds of fries…
No to the hell it is not!!😂😂 soggy ass buns, over priced, wrapped in tinfoil like I’m in a soup kitchen. The only thing they have going for them is their fries and they are still hit and miss.
@@isambo400 maybe it's a location thing..the one I always go to is nothing like you described..the buns are always fresh and toasted not soggy at all..the patty is done well and the fries are always made right in front of you...crispy goodness
Their fries are awesome too, Also they give the options on what to add as toppings. All the way is awesome,
Andy, next time you're in the states you should give Five Guys a try. Not necessarily a fast food spot, but it's miles above any of the places you stopped by in the US in this video.
You're actually supposed to eat your burger upside down. the top bun is bigger than the bottom bun usually and helps control slippage.
Betty’s Burger is hands down one of the best burger joints I’ve ever had. Ferg Burger in Queenstown, New Zealand is up there also.
Great video Andy! Betty's Burgers are the best!!! And Grill'd's are a good second!
Betty's is top 5. Best "chain" burger in Australia was Burger Project but Neil Perry decided to cut his losses early during covid. Not exactly a surprise considering he didn't skimp on the raw ingredients (cape grim etc) and needed high turnover to make it profitable.
Love this type of video! More please!
Your score In-and-Out Fries is spot on. We go there to get the burgers only. Then get fries at McDs on the way home.
Should definitely try Broken Hearts Burger Club next time you’re in Brisbane! They do an incredible smash burger
I can remember when Betty was still making and selling $1 burgers on Hastings St Noosa. Late 80's
You needed to go to Carina (unless there is one closer to you) and grab yourself a Getta Burger. I know it isn't a large chain, but well worth the drive!
Second this. And Carina not the others which tend to be a bit on the uurrgghhh side
So coo!
Glad you enjoyed it!
(You can order them cooked however you want.) My go to is the Triple meat animal style extra sauce and and animal style fries extra crispy with no cheese(so good)
Like that format! :)
Sam's Takeaway at Woolloongabba is a family run by two folk in their 70s and make a great burger!
PS. Their vietnamese springrolls are megavalue and lush.
Betty’s is my goto fast food burger chain in Australia, but I do agree their chips need some work (that’s why I get onion rings)
Grill'd? Interesting, I prefer Betty's burgers but you right on Grill'd chips, they are awesome.
When I go to In - n - Out I order my fries "well done" so they cook them a bit more. The food is good and fresh.
When I order fries I ask for crispy fries and salt on the side then you get hot fries ask for salt yourself. The best fries are at checkers yummy. Great video chef Andy I loved the video. You are too cool 😊😊😊
Went through Brisbane and came across Betty's burgers.. hands down the best ive ever had...
So far...
Looks like you might have originally been including Burger Urge as well (Based on where you are in the opening).
Cookbook isn't available everywhere 😤 Waiting for pre-order in EU ☺
Hey andy have you ever had fuel burgers in nz? We frothed em when we where there a few years ago
Great video Andy, if you ever get to Dublin Ireland, you need to have a Bunsen Burger, 9.5/10
If you ever come to cali, go to the Habit. Highly underrated burger spot in SoCal
Andy, get down to Melbourne and check out the Royal Stacks on Collins Street. Best burger in Melbourne by far.
Ooo thanks for the recommendation. My favourite in Melbourne is Andrews Burgers in Albert Park.
I'll have to get to Collins St soon!
Love Betty's Burgers, Shake Shack was my favourite in america too.
Pickles are good if there are plenty, but they need to be distributed evenly. I have had burgers with all the pickles in the middle
I think a standard works burger from almost any fish and chip take away is the best burger in aus. Egg, beetroot, bacon, pineapple,... the best. Also that meal from grilled was probably close to $20USD
Five guys would have been the worthiest contender from the US
Definitely need to do 5 guys instead of stake and shake, gotta get animal style at in n out, and maybe try smash burger next time
