China: A Skier's Journey

  • Skiing as sport is in it’s infancy in China, a phenomenon of the country’s exploding middle class. As a means of survival, however, it is thousands of years old, a stone age hunter-gatherer technology born in the Altai mountains where China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan
    and Siberia merge. On a vast trajectory that spans 11,000km of Northern China, Chad Sayers and Forrest Coots touch down into the rich past and dizzying future of these two respective Chinese ski cultures. As one rapidly expands, they find the other is at risk
    of disappearing.

    Although I was born in china this is my first time to know the skiing history of China and how skis are made in their very original way. Hope one day I'll be skiing in those beautiful mountains in China.

    I heard there’s now high speed training connecting Altay to Urumuqi and the rest of China. And from China to Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

    Wonderful video. I hope the local people in Altay can keep their traditions - even as many of the young will move to cities... But it is absolutely a good thing that limits were put in place by the Chinese government against cutting fresh trees and over hunting wild animals. China suffered terribly ecologically in the 20th century. They need to regrow as much forest as they can - for the good of the whole planet.

    Love the tale of the hunt. Only shots of the land as you tell us (to use our imaginations) of how the traditional skiers tracked their prey.
    Beautiful work. Glad your taking ski films to the level of cultural ski portraits. Encouraging the bond between why/how we ski with our modern culture.

      Just the new names alone: New York, New England, New Jersey, New Hampshire etc. Manchester, Plymouth, Oxford, Bristol, Chester, Dover.. Not to mention places named after other countries like Ireland, Holland, Belgian, Norwegian, Czech and YES, even China - Pekin, Illinois, Canton, New York, Nankin Township, Michigan and so on.... So original huh!

    This is another resason why I love China so much as my most favorite country in the world: Being such an enormous country, it has such a diversity in landscapes, which includes titanic mountain ranges, vast grasslands and steppes, scorching hot deserts, cold boreal forests, and lush, verdant, tropical rainforests. The other reason is the cultural diversity that is native to this country, with various ethnic groups of different cultural and genetic backgrounds inhabiting various regions throughout China. It's such a fascinating country. 🇨🇳

    If anyone is watching this in 2022, as an update, a MASSIVE ski resort has just opened a few km outside Khom, called the Jikepulin International Ski Resort. It opened with over 7700 acres of inbounds terrain, and 4500 feet (around 1375m) of lift-serviced vertical. I’m commenting this because there’s literally zero coverage of it in any international media, general or ski-focused, probably due to the Covid restrictions that China has had. But China is completely opening its borders soon, so sooner or later word of this place is going to trickle out. I’ve been living in China for a few years now, and will be heading there myself in about a week. Stoked out of my mind is the only way to describe myself right now.

      @chrisskiingpowpow หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      AGREED!
      There is almost NO coverage of these new areas in Western media. Jikepulin looks absolutely amazing and the powder skiing there must be incredible.
      I'm hoping to do a trip in the near future.

    • @dz-dg9sv
      @dz-dg9sv หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@chrisskiingpowpow thanks for the comment! As an update, yes it was absolutely incredible! It’s quite hard to get to still, and not the most beginner friendly, which somewhat limits the amount of people that visit. There’s also multiple base areas which spread the crowds out.
