Love this movie!
Th sounds of the Ymir alien were that of an elephant fast forward or slowed down to make it sound otherworldly.
Originally, the Ymir alien was supposed to landing Chicago, but decided that they put the creature in Rome.
There is a comic book miniseries, 20 Million Miles More, that was released a few years ago that shows the origins of the Ymir coming to Earth centuries ago and they were worshiped as gods. It acts as a sequel to the movie where Greek and American governments covered up the Ymir attacking Rome.

Star Ace is on quite the roll with the Harryhausen line, & they just getting started. Now they need to bust out a smaller scale reasonably priced diorama setup, featuring the old school Godzilla vs Kong i e Dragon vs Cyclops : )

Another excellent and thorough review. The Star Ace Ymir has a much more detailed sculpt than the smaller, free Ymir included with the Sony Harryhausen dvd set from many years ago. I have the Star Ace Deluxe Ymir which I like a lot even though the human figure is too small, but the street light and human figure add to its visual presence. Sideshow had both the Ymir and Kraken on sale at one time, but I don't think they're on sale any more. I'm still waiting for Star Ace to release the Hydra, Cephalopod and Flying Saucer from other Harryhausen movies.
