Gary that’s a excellent video and your shop is awesome. I’m thinking about that Kalamazoo but they are 500 bucks now. I liked how you explained everything too and your advice. Thanks
I was not aware of the coote grinder, it looks pretty interesting for the money. It appears to be set up for a pulley and the motor. A good one horse power or 2 hp single phase motor is actually a little pricey even on craigslist. In the end I think you have another hundred dollars or so into this grinder, but it worthwhile upgrade.
These are the tools you use to create those beautiful knives in crazy steels? I am very impressed. I have seen your knives on Cedric & Ada outdoors. They are very nice pieces. There just might be some hope for me. Thank you.
Don't forget about Norm Coote's grinder! About the same price as the Kalamazoo, but more solid and precise. Yeah, you have to find a motor for it, but those are dime a dozen at yard sales and Craigslist.
We think pretty similarly, only thing I’d disagree with is needing variable speed, I grew with cheap grinders that were wide open full throttle only and after years of that I would never pay what they ask for a variable speed unit, it’s one of those it might be better but I’m doing fine and I’d rather spend $500 on something else lol. Also harbor freight sells a 6”x48” belt sander like your 4x36 but bigger that is killer grinder, I bought it as my second grinder and it’s still in my must have tools especially for profiling or doing any that’s big and flat, that 6” wide belt comes in handy, I wish I could have a 6”x72” but I wouldn’t want to pay 3x as much for belts lol. Also I did the swag portaband thing too, I bought a “used” Milwaukee deep cut on eBay that was so new it had the spare blades still, it was $200 which seems like the going rate, I’d buy it over the harbor freight pretty much any day for the extra $100 I’m certain I’ll never need another one.
The Kyle Real challenge demand: chromoly / stainless / nickel in a damascus style no gut hook, skinning knife. I've never seen an artist able to do this. True never been done. I've been told it can't happen. Bonus for Mithridiees or Kurdish style blade. Challenge given can you produce?

I'm glad I found this video. I have been trying to figure out which grinder to get. I have killed 2 harbor freight 1x30 grinders, lol
My main grinder is an esteem by Bret Mathews. It is about $1800 with variable speed.
Gary Creely that's almost double how much your shop costs... lol
I thought it looked familiar. That's what I use as well. I like it a lot.
What do you use to heat treat your blades?

Thanks for the kind words. This video only shows what tools I would get with only $1000, I do have other not in the video.

My God man clean your shop!
You are very right! It seems to be a losing battle sometimes but, I am not alone though!
where did you get your main grinder
Thanks for putting this up! How much for the 2"x72" grinders?
about $250
@@aandadailey Thanks so much! This should help a lot of people. That Baldor motor is made in Arkansas as well so yes buy American when you can!.
Can you give me a full list of tools please.. And nice video!✌
You sound like Anthony Bourdain.
I just dropped 5k on my shop... lets see if I can make it worth it

Normally Balldor 1/2 hp motors don't require a exterior start cap. Interesting ...
Interestingly since I purchased my Kalamazoo grinder the model has been updated, and now the motor is branded just "Kalamazoo".
high quality company- SKIL? :D
SKIL is a fucking garbage.
neo newman they didn't used to be....
