    It's a sleeper. I thing a lot of people shooting film now are into a "let's make things difficult" so that it feels like "art." I get that. But when I want to do extremely technical photography, I use my D850 in my studio. When I want to just go with a feeling and not overthink my settings, I go outside and shoot film with this camera. It's dummy-proof. It meters well, it's light, it's not expensive, and it uses all your Nikon lenses you already own. The only downside is that it's not waterproof and it's not SUPER durable. But just don't get it wet, and don't drop it. Done. You said it. For anyone who wants to play around with film, this is perfect.

    I forget which CSM mode it is, but you can configure the AE-L/AF-L button on the back to be AF-ON. I half-press the shutter to get exposure lock. I love the meter and the gridlines in the finder too

      Great video on this underappreciated camera. I use the custom function and back button focus on my N80. I love this wonderfully capable camera. As 35mm continues to grow once again it's only a matter of time before the N80 gets rediscovered and prices skyrocket. "The world" just hasn't gotten 'round to making the N80 This Month's Hot Great Old CameraFind. I'm buying a second one before this happens.

    nice review, the deal breaker for a lot of film shooters is the inability to meter with AI manual focus lenses. I picked up a F90x for 25 bucks and it meters my MF lenses and shoots/focus my 105mm f2.8g VR lens flawlessly albeit in program and shutter priority modes only, which is fine.

      I too went to Digital and got myself a Nikon D300 back in 2009 with most extras that one could have and I hardly use that now as I have found myself reverting back to the good old 35mm film camera which is a FULL FRAME where as my D300 is a DX not a FX to which one has to spend more money to get to the FULL FRAME camera in digital.
      I am 65 years old and film was the way to go and still is for me.
      My D300 has done just under 1600 photos and still looks new after 11 years.
      I picked up a Nikon F80 that had a Nikon 28-80mm lens and I got myself a MB-16 Battery Pack. With that you can use 4 x AA Rechargeable Eneloop Batteries. I still have my Nikon F60 that was my original film camera. I now would like to pick up a Nikon F100 as my go to film camera. So yes I would like to see Nikon bring out a new 35mm Film camera

    I'm looking to get a N90x or a F100, just to get the "G" lenses compatibility, to use those that I already have from my digital gear. I'm surprised to see that this camera is also capable to drive the aperture on those lens series... can you please confirm that again? Thanks, and excelent clip!

    • @DaveMontejano
      @DaveMontejano  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This camera will 100% work with G lenses. I’ve personally used prime and 24-70 2.8g lens with this camera. Auto focus and aperture work perfectly. But I still would recommend the F100 because it can also work with D lenses. Since D lenses need the screw to drive the auto focus.

    • @marcp.1752
      @marcp.1752 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DaveMontejano You're wrong informed. The F80 does also drive all AF-D series of lenses. I am using my F80 mostly with either way my Nikkor 35/F2D (AF-D) or Nikon 28-70/3.5-4.5D, which is version II (original was released with the F90, and without "D" distance encoding. That zoom is also one out of two F100 kitlenses, the other one was the 28-105/3.5-4.5D. The 28-70, because it's small size suits perfectly the small F80/N80. And it's better than ppl think.

  • @SammySantiagoIrizarry
    @SammySantiagoIrizarry 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great Video!!! I know why the Nikon N80 is not as valuable as the F100. The main reason is because it won't work with the old manual focus lens. Most analog film enthusiast look for the old manual focus lenses. While the Nikon F100 will allow you to use the old Nikon manual focus lens as long they are AI. Also another downside for the N80 is that employs an Infrared frame counter to count the frames, making this camera a NO NO for those Infrared film shooters. The demand stablished by the online market has given a value to all this wonderful cameras. For example if people start ordering and looking for the Nikon F80, I'm sure the value will start going up, but sadly there is no demand. The same happens in Canon with the EOS 3, witch is value more than the EOS 1n. Why? Demand. Now the Nikon F80 will be a perfect companion for any photographer with a DSLR. Because it will use all the new AF and G lenses; and you will be able to add to your image collection the wonderful Analog look but not the ability to use Infrared film.

    One major down fall for this (and many other plastic SLRs) are the plastic film door hooks that are on these cameras. They become so fragile over time that they just bound to break on you one day. I had 3 of these over the years, 2 of them had one or both hooks broke off just by sitting in my camera bag or in the cupboard over a couple of months unused. I dont think there are any ways to avoid this unfortunately.

    • @eustacequinlank7418
      @eustacequinlank7418 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't slap the door shut like you're Arnie loading magazine into a machine gun is my, err 'motto'. I agree though, I have an F100 (not exactly a plastic camera though) and I'm sometimes worried I might experience the same event at some point as entire door replacements are hard to come by. Even though I don't notice it, the plastic door is one of its major design criticisms.
      Why Nikon made them like that since the rest of it is made like a tank could have a cynical interpretation, the F100 with an MB-15 is more or less a docked F5 with a few niche features excluded (5FPS instead of 8, no mirror lock up and no colour matrix metering no removable prism that the more expensive F6 doesn't have either) as to not dissuade Pro users from getting the more expensive option I presume. I'm not sure about the efficacy of colour matrix metering over simple matrix either. I haven't really noticed. I have read about people successfully replacing them with custom metal hooks however. I had an F5 a while back, but not having a removable grip made it pretty heavy and rather bulky for an everyday shooter. The F100 is otherwise more or less perfect for me. I hope it never breaks! For a film camera of its kind, not that expensive to replace anyway. Amazing how low they go for now. Around £200 if you import from Japan (including duty)

    • @orion7741
      @orion7741 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, but you can very easily just fabricate your own little door hooks and attach them in the place of the factory ones. Not complicated

    • @danc2014
      @danc2014 ปีที่แล้ว

      The F80 has 2 hooks and built into the door edge frame thus stronger The N6006 is a single hook and broke. The problem was a coating turns to rubber glue after 20 years. but you can remove that.

  • @teleaddict23
    @teleaddict23 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This is such a bargain. It's a modern full frame SLR you can pick up for 30 bucks. Think about what that would cost you in the digital world. You will be getting the same shallow depth of field with the film look we strive for in Lightroom and without the hassle - all for 30 bucks! Think about that. The only difference is you have to get your photos developed that costs money, but you could develop 50 films and you wouldn't even be halfway to what a digital full frame would cost you.

    The cost of using G lenses is that the camera loses some functionality with older lenses. That, and the 1/125th sec flash sync speed probably account for its lower price. The sort of people who buy Nikon film SLRs tend to also love AI and AI-S lenses. In other words, the F80 is an almost perfect AF camera, but not a great manual focus camera. People love MF on film cameras. Thus the prices are lower. Don't complain - it makes it easier to buy this little AF gem.

    shit, i did not know it can be that cheap. I just bought one for like 60 usd and thought to myself "what a great price for such a camera"

      60 was a great price. The F80 is not cheap any more, to find one with decent condition is hard and you have to pay 100 - 150, unless you are totally lucky.

    Thanks for a helpful video. I was tired of watching silent vedeos with a pair of hand doing a silent camera walk around lol

      I'd say a small, not a poor man's. The F5 can be found cheap aswell these days. But I would prefer an F100

    Because people dont know.. They think new is better, and after getting it they realise thye just sold gold and got paper for it.. Same shit hapened to me when i sold F80 with my Sigma lenses for like 150 dollars.. Today i want not the camera but my lenses back.. TOO Fucking late.. I got sold to fake reviews and commertials.. Today if i want to get lenses like these and a full frame camera OMG OMG.. I don't earn so much in a year!!! Can you imagine how much i got screwed up by fakers?? I had 18-70mm sigma lens, and 70-200mm lens both sigma, both made for film camera both with autofocus and all the juicy stuff.. At some point new lenses were blooming in prices so my lens was cheap, so i thaught i had trash in my bag and stupid idiot me sold it! Thinking that the new will be better.. I got so so cheated.. Dammit! And the full frame film camera OMG! I sold all of that for trash money and 2 years later this shit is worth a fortune!

    BRILLIANT camera ....... had mine for 5 years.... costs me £50...... never had a problem...... sold my F5 for it...... yeah.... think about that...... and it does 90%+ that my F5 did...... and weighted nothing .... looked back at my 200 posts and 50% of my shots were on the F80.....what does that tell me?
