- This is my journey to getting an image printed Platinum Palladium style haha. I won't tell too much, but I will say that this photo was shot on the Mamiya RZ67 on Kodak Tri-X film. Thanks to Matt over at Hidden Light Photo Lab for everything. I hope you all enjoy this one. It was truly a blast to make!

Beautiful work. This really resonated with me.
When I was in my 20’s I was a huge sneaker head and avid fixed gear biker. I blew probably a months work on a carbon fiber bicycle. Cost me about $1300 bucks and it was the most expensive thing I had ever owned. As I got older I stopped rocking my colorful sneaker collection and hardly rode my bike. It actually became a burden storing all these sneakers and this bike I didn’t use.
One day I had a moment of clarity. I was broke and could barely pay my rent but I had all this expensive meaningless shit around. I realized that all that shit I was holding onto was actually holding me back in life. My reasoning was this… I held onto these things because I was afraid I’d never be able to afford it again. I let these things dictate my position and wealth in life.
Long story long, I sold everything and let go of the fear of being broke or failing. That’s what this image you’ve created says to me. I know you made it for a different reason but it’s symbolic of this epiphany I had in my 20’s and I was compelled to share.
Ralph Gibson calls the photographic journey “a compression of time”. I believe that’s what you’ve done here. From the moment this shoe was created to the print on your wall. Great work brother!
Thanks so much for sharing that man 🙏🏾
this is absolutely awesome man, thanks for that words
@@stynker14 🙏🏾♥️
I had a very similar situation in my 20's... instead it was music and DJ gear!
What an incredible video and even better print so excited for you!
Thanks for everything man!
Funny, reminds me of a video I watched on a certain someones account a couple years ago. Is it just me that sees the similarity in Mikes photography path and this channel? Hmmm.

Incredible!!! This resonated with me because I had a pair of rare dunks. I searched, saved and never wore them. 1st time I did, my newborn daughter had an “accident” while I was holding her and it ruined my shoe. There was no anger or frustration. Just relief. That was a pivotal time and this photo reminds me of that.
Thanks a lot for sharing that Harold!
So cool to see artists supporting each other!
Such a dope feeling!!!
I drove up to Flagstaff when I visited Phoenix, just to see these prints - what a cool shop - skipped the whisky - must have know I was a tire kicker
Brooo your videos have inspired me once again to shoot medium format film! I've been watching all your videos the last 2 days; even at work. If I ever get the chance to meet you, along with Tyler as he's one of my inspirations, it would be such an honour. Hopefully, Jordan himself buys your print
I truly appreciate it Karl
LETS GOOO MIKE!!! Truly an honor man this was such a fun project and an overall fun trip man. Seriously thank you for having me on and trusting me with your vision!!! 🙌🙌🙌
Wouldn’t have wanted it any other way brother. WE did this! So much more to come as well. Thank YOU for all of your talent on this. Couldn’t have been possible without you. 🙏🏾
Long live mr. mike gray🤍
That’s love 🙏🏾
Cool video. I love to watch Matt's videos over at Hidden Light. Very informative.
Glad you enjoyed it James 🙏🏾
Tyler shields isn’t a bad mentor to have!
I also had a pair of those Jordan’s when I was in school in the 90s and got picked on for wearing them 😂
Not at all haha
The sneaker head in me just had a heart attack, but the photographer in me is giving a standing ovation. This is a phenomenal print and documentary, bravo on taking the leap of faith on such a great idea!
haha I appreciate that Kendall
Such amazing inspiration. I learned something new today about photography. Thank you for this experience.
I appreciate that bro
Mike drop . . . . . . . . soooooo butter!

Love that you went on a journey to create this! Dope to have a backstory to this beautiful photo! Mike you’ve done it again 💪🏽
Thanks so much!
That’s a great shot. It looks like it’s been through everything, yet it’s value still remains. Also, I like that clip and the ending. Classic interview. Good content sir! Keep up the good work, very inspiring

Man that is one neat photograph. Now, I want to do one with my (look away), H6 digital. Nice work, respect. David in the UK.
haha thanks David 🙌🏾
This is awesome! Ever since I watched Ted Forbes from theartofphotography go to Hidden Light and walk through the process of one of these prints I've been working on taking something that I would love to do the print! Still on that journey but awesome to see someone else go through the process. Super happy for you!!! Love the videos and have loved seeing your process!
Thanks so much Erick!
Great work and storytelling Mike! Keep shining. 💪🏿👋🏿👋🏿👋🏿💪🏿
Thank you so much!
Just amazing!!!
Thank you!
Nice job Great video you certainly have an impressive reward!
Thank you!
Tyler seems like a great mentor! Great video, and amazing print. The clip at the end also added a whole other level of context👏🏾
Thanks a lot!
Very inspirational video....makes me wanna start doing some nice prints. Prints are key to visualize our sucess. Keep pushing mike👋🏼
Thank you Steve
Loving it! Thanks for the journey, Mike. I was diggin' the syncopation with the music and quick transitions during the print processing part of the video - very cool. I'm glad you took the dive into PP. Matt has made three PP prints for me each @ 30x40 for an exhibit I'm building. Expensive. But I already sold one (they can't have it until after the show). The collector who purchased it said, "You just don't see this kind of work anymore." Timeless!
I love that Matthew!
This is so dope. The idea, the journey, the print 👏👌
Thanks a lot bro!
Iconic shoe. Iconic photo. Iconic print. Awesome video my guy! I can't wait to start printing my work!
Thanks a lot man!
Just wow !
thanks!
Don't know why I was expecting you to shoot it while it was burning. Still, this shot is absolutely amazing. I'm very happy for you mate! Also, never heard about Platinum Palladium before so I definitely learned a lot on this matter. Thanks for sharing all this journey with us mate!
Haha no fire but thanks so much Noah!

Dope video and print!
Thanks Tyler!
I was ready for Mike to burn them shoes up 😆 great image and great video!
I couldn’t disrespect em that much bro hahahaha!
@@MikeGrayFilm hahahaha
This video production should be required viewing in every art school around the world. What can I say. Epic
Damn. Thanks a lot Tony.
@@MikeGrayFilm You're welcome sir. I was going to say why. I tried to speak and I could not. Yeah on it's own it's a shoe but its the spirit that gives life. Put technology at the service of spirit and you create goodness and a sense that life is bigger than what's going on, on the surface of things. And more than technology, the community of others in this video production warms the soul. I'll shut up now before I make fool of myself.
Great story.
Thank you.

Really nice shot and print, even without a fire 😅
Haha no fire this time. Thanks though!

Maybe for the next time some explanation of the process? Materials? Variables? Or am I supposed to already know this stuff?
Absolut fantastic Picture. The Detail on the fabric feels just like reallife, like you can actually touch the print and feel the leather upper.
Thats just a totally personal thing (and im not a real sneakerhead and mad because you destroyed a shoe or whatever) but if the shoe would be destroeyed, because you played in them and the sole got ripped in half, it would make more sense to me.
Idk how to describe it. Its more like using them instead of destroying them just for the pure reason to destroy them. Maybe you just had another idea in mind. To let loose of this unreal price and possession of yours. Maybe i would have executed it in a diffrent way.
Dont get me wrong, i really like the picture and your work.
If I had done it it would never be close to that great piece of art. Just sharing my thoughts.
I once heard "if you get someone to look at your photo for more than 10 seconds, its a good photo"
And you did that to me.
Keep it up.
Thanks so much man
Damn, Mike! This one has me conflicted. I understand the value in both the sneakers & the art.. but you think you could've taken a great photo without destroying the kicks? 😭
Crazy shot and great video! You always stepping it up 👏🏾
Thanks a lot bro. Honestly lol I had to do it!
🤩
🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
ok first things first... you had me on the floor (in awe) when you said "tyler shields is my mentor" lol
2. I would have gone for a bigger print (idk maybe the size you choose was more cost effective?)
3. Definitely a warmer tone than that
... what happened to the X1D shot...? Why not make a color print out from the digi-file??
haha. that small print was $1000 without framing included. I wasn't spending more than that. But I do like the size for the platinum. The X1D shot was GARBAGE compared to the RZ lol.
@@MikeGrayFilm haha... i figured!! I have watched ALL platinum palladium videos on here and I have some resource websites if you are interested. They actually have links to where you can get platinum and palladium powders and the chemistry. It's not SUPER hard bro... as with ANY printing, practice maketh the print!
Awesome print! What film did you shoot on?
Thanks a lot. Kodak Tri-X
I would like to start the bidding off at 1 million dollars ☝🏾
Hahaha I pray one day 🙌🏾
The realization that the print is going to be more then the shoe.
Way more.
Now if MJ will sign it😉
That would be crazy!
💪🏿♥️♥️♥️♥️
🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Would love to know why you picked the Mamiya and did not use the Hasselblad or Pentax!?!
Wanted to go 6x7 and wanted the waist level viewfinder. The RZ has a wonderful feel as well!
@@MikeGrayFilm right on, that viewfinder is BEAUTIFUL!
What was meant by, "While paper humidifies overnight?"
hmm...not sure I get it, it's a picture of a shoe...need to watch the entire vid I guess..
hope, that not last :)
far from the last haha
Was it just me or did the blacks take time to darken?
Idk, the irony of destroying something to preserve it as a photo doesn't really make sense for this time period.
Consumerism means *Nothing* from 1990-2022+ will survive even 70 years because everything is disposable, especially tech. So being able to preserve something physically is more of a statement than documenting it. We have millions of photos but no physical objects.
We are artists. We can do whatever the hell we want lmao
@@ReclusiveEagle we’ll be fine I promise
Good message, don't take it as a financial loss, consider it an investment.
100%
Don't do it buy some bs js
Too late smh lol
