  • In todays video, we see two Iowa Interstate trains. One through train and one local. Once they leave the yard, we catch back up with them at the Mississippi river, where the through train crosses in to Iowa, and the local shoves back to work a small yard.

@@Southern_Plains_Railfan when IAIS received 517-519, they put em in storage......couple of the 500s had a few accidents....the slugs are in storage as well.

@@willwozniak2826 Why would they put brand new engine in storage? Did IAIS just not have and immediate need for them?
That sucks. Unfortunately accidents are unavoidable sometimes… both of Iowa Interstates slugs are stored with their excursion passenger cars in Silvis IIRC.

We true railfans want to see the real deal, trains in action today vs say just B&W newsreels from the steam era or whatever else. What a delight to see this small line doing what trains do best, and looking good at it, btw, how else would we have known about it? More great video and narration as always. Share this site to keep 'em coming!

You know your Unit Types, that’s for sure. Was down in Southern Illinois the past few days and my brother-in-law said the UP Units had different Horns. 😬👍

Very nice video I'm planning to go to Silvis Illinois to see the rest of the equipment union Pacific has donated to the Silvis shops that includes union Pacific challenger 3985 and union Pacific 2-10-2 5511 which are to be restored for excursion service along with a few more passenger cars and two union Pacific diesel locomotives including union Pacific dd40x 6936 and if you didn't know Iowa interstate delivered 6 union Pacific passenger cars to the Silvis shops and are waiting for service.

Thank you! A trip to Silvis would be worthwhile, but I don’t think you can see any of the equipment UP has donated. The passenger cars are being stored in the main building, and I don’t think any locomotives have been delivered yet.

    Some further information:
The portion of the line this video was shot on is primarily owned and maintained by BNSF, though dispatched and operated by IAIS. Known as the BNSF Industrial track, (former DRI&NW), it is 10 MPH, and GCOR Rule 6.28 Other Than Main Track applies, meaning all movements must be made at a speed which allows the engineer to stop in half his range of vision. Hence two trains following closely together. You can catch IAIS, as well as BNSF and Canadian Pacific local traffic on this line.
Your comment about PTC wouldn't apply to this track even if IAIS were mandated to have PTC as it is not a main track. That said, IAS locomotives are equipped for PTC as they do run in PTC territory in Chicago.
Once past the yard at Rock Island and over the Arsenal Bridge over the Mississippi, the road train (most likely symbol BICB), will get on the IAIS Iowa City Sub. main, get a track warrant and head west to South Amana, Iowa at 40 MPH. At South Amana, home of the IAIS locomotive shops, the train will be switched and the box cars you saw along with other traffic will head north on the Cedar Rapids Sub. (former MILW) to Cedar Rapids for interchange with the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City (CIC), while the rest of the traffic will continue west on the IAIS main.
The local you caught was either a SISW or RISW with cars from the yard at Silvis for local delivery in the Quad Cities area, primarily on the Milan Branch (formerly the Rock Island & Southern main line to Peoria, and subject of an HO scale modeling project in Railroad Model Craftsman magazine).
The 150-series SD-38s have been in and out of storage as traffic demands have fluctuated and as the IAIS has faced issues with some of the big GEVO power being damaged at grade crossing incidents with semi-trucks. Being the least fuel efficient locomotives on the roster, they are the first to go into storage when there is an excess of power.

Very good video. Although there's one mistake you made, and in a sense it's a positive one! There's not two through freights west of Silvis yard, but four! IAIS runs a train from South Amana, IA to Silvis, IL and vice versa every evening, oftentimes running on the same crew or even power set, but it is not a local. So from where you were standing on the west end of the yard, you can see 6 trains there every day, give or take, maybe even more. IAIS runs a local from their Silvis Yard to the Milan branch, the line that continues along the Illinois bank of the river near where you ended the video. Anyway, thought this info might help you on your next journey to the area. :) Great video!
