I'm a physicist and I absolutely love The Big Bang Theory, particularly with how correct the physics is and how well the characters play their roles as physicists. It's brilliant.
The light in David Saltzberg's eyes and that sweet smile when he talks about how he contributes to the show with his little physics related inside jokes is so awesome to look at
+Stina Rahnel "In the details, I get the chance to contribute." I wish we all were this grateful for what we can contribute everyday to everyone's lives :) Be it family, friends, work or random people during doing groceries or we meet on the streets.
"I'm a physicist, I thought about stuff" lol that's pretty much what I tell my mom when she asks what I did for the day. They didn't include the spherical chicken in a vacuum joke, which is hilarious because it is actually a common assumption (minus the chicken aspect).
Thanks for your work on (the big bang theory). I love the show and a big part of it is your work, of course the rest is because of Penny. Thanks again Joe
The physics professors and physics majors I know are pretty evenly split between those who like the show, those who think it's tacky (me), and those who find it to be a bad portrayal of scientists in general. That last group definitely has a point. While it's always cool to see the kinds of topics we're used to the public shying away from like we're making shit up actually be referred to on national television, the show manages to place the vast majority of its scientist characters (namely the main characters) directly into the stereotype of aspie, socially inept and frequently condescending which is certainly not the case for real scientists by and large. I will say that there are *more* people like that in the physics community than in the general public, but I'd say that maybe at most 10-20% of grad or junior/senior undergrad physics students act any more "like a physics major" than just the first person you'd walk by on a campus street, and I've literally never met one as weird as the people on that show. There was one kid who was a bit strange but we all quickly learned he was basically the textbook definition of a savant, and even he knew way more about social interaction than say, Sheldon, and wasn't at all condescending. I could spend hours discussing all the times someone first realized that kid was a genius. But that's beside the point. I don't find the show offensive (after all it's no different than the portrayal of scientists in almost any other form of media), but I do think they had the opportunity to show them more as normal people. And yeah, without Sheldon's ineptitude you wouldn't have all those canned laughter jokes and it would ruin the show; I get that. I'm not saying change Sheldon. But the fact that almost every scientist on the show is that way to some degree wasn't the best way for them to handle it. I work with physicists every day but if I knew someone like Sheldon IRL I'd have to make a conscious effort not to backhand him every few minutes. Maybe I'd write a paper with him if we were researching the same topic. But we'd converse via email.
+Pounce Baratheon True. I don'y even understand the general aversion mainstream American media has towards intelligent characters, and hence their negative or biased portrayal.
I don't really feel studio laughter is pulling one over on us. Especially when watching at home in a smaller group of people, with jokes that may come off as slightly cringy (personally one of my favorite forms of humor) the studio laughter helps break the air, and not make it awkward to laugh. It's pretty obvious that's not casual laughter, even at standup comedy shows, laughter is never that coordinated.
Pounce Baratheon While I do empathize to a degree with your comment, I find the show somewhat funny in certain aspects. I'm a software engineer and personally I enjoy humor that contains "exaggerated stereotyping". To me, it seems almost obvious that these are warped caricatures of otherwise ordinary academics. I am aware that such stereotyping is unhelpful in mitigating a prevalent cultural perception of academics in STEM as socially awkward but I for one would always expect someone smart enough to figure out that reality could never possibly mirror a comedy show. I mean, I'm from India and I laugh out LOUD at references to India in the show like " Ganges on laundry day" and would honestly be surprised if someone heard that and automatically convinced themselves that this is ABSOLUTELY TRUE of India.
The show really only mentions physics... Also it's not about being smart, it's about being resistant to frustration. That's the #1 quality of a physicist.
I believe it's a small snippet of the instrumental version of the beginning theme song, which though it is part of the end of the episode with the credits, the network never plays it. If you get them on DVD it will be there.
The chemistry sometimes written out on the whiteboard among the physics equations is, at times, inaccurate; which surprised me for how scientific the show makes itself seem. But, now I see that a physicist is checking this and it makes sense.
theCreator The Dirac hamiltonian for graphene on Sheldon's whiteboard in "The Einstein Approximation" is non-hermitian. That's the only example of a mistake I have seen since starting to watch in 2007. Having done a physics degree since then it's now quite fun to pause on the whiteboards to find out how much more I understand.
Why they give him the feeling that he contribute a little to the Show . I ONLY WATCH THE SHOW FOR THE SCIENCE PART (or what's left of it these last seasons)!
The science on this show is dealt with in the same way that most actors approach Shakespeare, they don't really understand the meaning of the words they are saying, they just say it with a prosody/emotion they think is appropriate.
When the doctor said reverse the polarity of the neutron flow, he actually meant reverse the direction of the neutron flow. When it comes to neutrons, Z bosons or any other neutral particles, referring "polarity" actually means their direction. So yea The Doctor is correct! Sorry Whovian here!
while I like the show enough to enjoy an episode or two from time to time that part [~ 2:20] about the script having these [science to come] brackets illustrates the problem this show is having with its science-ish content pretty well, I think the science part is not integral to the joke at all. It could be pretty much anything. kinda funny that they talk about that so openly here : P
@Pusalieth: "The fact he says look up the topics on google and wikipedia shows where he gets his info, disregarding physics as a mathematical field rather than english, not including the fact that all the people on the show would be diagnosed with physiological disorders, and are nothing like truly intelligent people." I want to point out that having a psychological disorder doesn't imply that you aren't intelligent, either...
Hmm. Must have mis-read "physiological". Or did he mean something else? Don't get it, either. Also, how does having a disorder -- physiological or psychological -- automatically bear on their "intelligence", when you don't know what the disorder is, as whether and what effect it would have on intelligence would be totally dependent on that?
Most of the jokes are pretty bad, and the scientific topics, while generally accurate, are very rudimentary and simple (they don't sound like things advanced physicists would talk about), and feel extremely forced and tacked on just for the hell of it ("It's a physics show, it HAS TO have some physics in it, no matter what way"). In essence, no physicist appreciates this show for its physics talk. Humor, on the other hand, is subjective, so to each their own, but I feel it's lacking.
I don't think the point of the show is specifically the science topics or jokes themselves. I think the beauty of it is to see the world from their point of view, where the scientists are the protagonists, and the rest of the everyday public is the minority, for a change. I do agree some jokes are a bit cheesy, but what I personally enjoy and find funny is the struggles they encounter while trying to lead a "normal" life. Just my two cents :)
theCreator Well, I'm really sorry, but I'm an actual physicist and these people in the show do not reflect what that means. Nor do I expect them to realistically do, it's understandable, but the show *defines itself* on being a "physics" show, which it fails hard to be. And it's *very* noticeable to anyone who's half-versed in these subjects.
zolikoff No, the show does not define itself being a "physics" show. Its centralised around the concept of the scientists now being the majority and their failures to understand social aspects of day to day life. It has nothing to do with the actual physics of it, that's merely a back-story, you've misinterpreted what the show actually is. It's definitely not an educational show. Although I am not a physicist, I am a chemist so I do get most of the jokes and the punchlines but I don't think the point of the show is to analyse the actual scientific content and note its failure to make you laugh.
theCreator It's not the scientific content that's failing to make me laugh. It's the "jokes" that fail to make me laugh. The scientific content just strikes me as being there only for the sake of it being there, and yes, the show does define itself as being a "science" show (specifically physics), and the "hints" characters make are extremely forced and obvious... ...which is blatantly obvious to me, and which doesn't help the fact that the humor isn't to my liking, and just makes it that much worse. Bad humor show? That's alright, not everything touches my funny strings. Bad humor show that's also pretentious? Oh come on, that's bad.
I really can't understand why this show is such a huge hit. WHY are so many people watching this?? I can understand that "nerds" find this show hilarious. I am sure they love a lot of references and physics' and math laws and humor etc., coz they recognise them. But WHY?? do other people / the mainstream like this show?? It is often VERY!! annoying. Like i said "nerd" humor. I just sometimes wanna "punch" these guys (or throw my TV out of the window) simply coz its (very often) not funny, just annoying. Especially Sheldon. He's not a hero, he just irritates me so much, i don't care if he is acting. Is it because there are not many other good sitcoms on tv right now?? So people just watch anything?? I can't believe these guys are making millions with such a shitty / annoying show. And plz don't say coz they are so nerdy it is funny. It is really not. Yes, maybe for a certain (niche) audience. And maybe for like a / one movie or something it could be a bit interesting (like Revenge of the Nerds). But this is going on for 10 whole !! seasons (= ten years!), and might go on even longer. Also, no i am not a low educated person. I should "fit in" their target group (i guess). Maybe people think that if they watch this show, other people think they are somewhat intelligent?? Could this be another reason?? All i can say for myself is, this show irritates me like no other sitcom has, and i can't believe it gets the ratings it gets.
I'm a physicist and I absolutely love The Big Bang Theory, particularly with how correct the physics is and how well the characters play their roles as physicists. It's brilliant.

You can see how thrilled the cast is to talk about this guy.
I was just thinking how little physics the big bang theory actually has.
Thanks for your work on (the big bang theory). I love the show and a big part of it is your work, of course the rest is because of Penny.

Pounce Baratheon all the characters are based on real people the writers knew
Not canned laughter. Show is recorded with a live studio audience.

sadly there are less physics bow in the newer seasons, all silly typical drama
+pitot1988 True. Before you learnt a thing to 2
lol this video is on my physics online course
The show really only mentions physics...
Also it's not about being smart, it's about being resistant to frustration. That's the #1 quality of a physicist.
It's all in the details.......His help makes the show in my opinion.
I believe it's a small snippet of the instrumental version of the beginning theme song, which though it is part of the end of the episode with the credits, the network never plays it.
If you get them on DVD it will be there.
"He may be completely conning us and this is all nonsense, we wouldn't know." LOL
You guys r doing great job.lov ya!!!
I would love to see Howard get his PhD before this series ends.
I actually liked this video, even though I don't really like the show.
this video fully highlights the cut and paste writing style of this show
i love this serie i have seen all seasons like 3 times :D
The chemistry sometimes written out on the whiteboard among the physics equations is, at times, inaccurate; which surprised me for how scientific the show makes itself seem. But, now I see that a physicist is checking this and it makes sense.
Ooh that's interesting, do you remember any examples of where the chemistry was inaccurate? :)
Sorry, none specifically. Next time i see one I'll put it in the comments here though.
kapper13459 That's convenient.

too much big words a great show that people probably don't understand but love it
The day Kaley Cuoco got married, I died a little :(
Kaley is so beautiful and gorgeous. And I love her!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And that was totally the point of this video.
I love J G's eyebrows.

9:40 I have that gif on my tumblr. GOD! I love the TBBT! :D
neither is the doctor who stuff, which is what I'm talking about.
The Friendship Algorithm - Season 2 episode 13
Does anyone know what music is playing at the end of the video?
I think she meant 'standard' when she said that
Thanks
which episode is on 08:14-08:26 ?
But they're stuck in the nucleus.
Gorgeous
awesooome love bigbangtheory :D
what episode is at 4:10?
They can rap also, it's been proven.
1:45 he explains the EPR paradox
neutrons can flow, it's been proven

I don't like Kaylee's assumption that the norm is not to be able to do science.

It still annoys me that they call The Doctor, Doctor Who instead of The Doctor.
agreed
what?
How was this garbage autoplayed from Feynman videos
TH-cam recommendations aren't just based on what you're currently watching (they know who you really are).
they don't either
I used to watch this show, but now too many normies watch it.
so edgy
Whats her IG
