Welcome to The Thin Blue Line official youtube channel. In this classic police sitcom, Rowan Atkinson plays Inspector Fowler, head of the Uniformed Branch of the fictional Gasforth police station. When a robber points a gun at you just say "no". He is legally not allowed to shoot you.
I mean, do you really want to turn a simple bank robbery charge into a first or second degree murder charge? I probably wouldn’t be brave enough to try that, but a part of me would be curious to see what would happen if you called a gun toting robbers bluff. “Go ahead shoot me. I live in Oklahoma, the state will kill ya back in a heartbeat. Pull the trigger, I dare ya.”
Actually he is if you escalate and put him in mortal danger too. If you don't comply and fight then get shot and die... And if the robber can prove this has happened, he will not be facing murder charges, only manslaughter and armed robbery

That, plus the fact that Britain is EXTREMELY harsh towards those who attack and or kill Police Officers. Even as stupid as those robbers were, they eventually realized that they were in over their heads once the two of them identified themselves as Police Officers.

if you hit police officer may be a misdemeanor (punishable by up to one year in jail) or a felony (punishable by one year or more in prison).

Maigret is a commissioner tho, and there wasn't any rank of chief inspector in the french police. The closest thing was probably the rank of "inspecteur principal" which became "capitaine" with the 1994 reform, considering chief inspector has the same insigna as the british army captain, just like the french police captain has the same insigna as the french army captain.
Commissioner are senior management and are above inspector, which were just the rank given for police officer iacting has detective, their uniformed counterpart simply having the title of peace officer. Officer, however, in France, aren't your bread an butter police constable like in the USA, they're middle management.

It just goes to show how times have changed. The line "I don't want to have anything to do with murdering coppers" used to actually mean something up until the early 90's in Britain. If you ended up in prison for murdering a copper in the line of duty, you would be in for a rather rough time. Obviously there will be some inmates who hate the police and would probably worship you, but they would be in a minority as the majority of people in prison aren't necesarily bad people, they have just done someting bad and may take a dim view of someone who killed someone else just for doing their job.
Your biggest problem would be coming from the guards though, if you ended up in a fight, they wouldn't be in much hurry to sort things out and then you may be on the recieving end of a few beatings behind closed doors.
