    Always a good idea to buy only watches with off-the-shelf movements. Parts for some exotic movements are hard to come by; in the worst case, they have to be made bespoke, which can get VERY expensive!

    I was lucky enough to find my rare vintage during a move and it was my grandfathers 1970 Bulova chronograph. It’s what got me into watches and what really got me into vintage watches. I have to agree that the 60’s and early 70’s were the golden age of the Chronograph.

    Im a vintage collector myself. I actually just got the Oris 7461. The most beautiful watch ever. Looked for 2 years. Vintage is honestly not that bad, and people become too careful with it. Your vintage watch likely has replacement parts. As long as its not the dial or the entire movement, I think you’re ok. As long as you do your homework, vintage is way more interesting than modern.

    Love vintage watches. I recently bought my first mechanical watch. A 1962 Omega Constellation with a pie pan dial. Your video on it was much appreciated. I paid a little over the going Chrono24 price from a London based Vintage dealer. I still did my research and cross checking but I have a fully serviced and all original, unpolished Omega from 60 years ago with little to no worries, for half of what you would pay for a contemporary piece.

  • @thetimemachine3828
    @thetimemachine3828 ปีที่แล้ว

    There's a heap of "how to buy vintage" guides on YT; this is one of the goodun's.
    I'm ~ 9 months into my own vintage journey - so still very much a beginner.
    My latest (vintage) buy is a 1970 BWC-Swiss Racing dial Chrono. A rare and beautiful piece - not unlike yours in appearance and running a freshly serviced Val. 7733.
    I'm in Australia. My local watchmaker is good, so they're a busy shop. I'm a new-ish customer and he's aloof. It's not a character flaw, it's a sign that he's busy and everybody wants to make friends with him - so his work does the talking. I'm nobody and my watches aren't as special to them as they are to me!!, nevertheless you get their best work (perhaps as a "friend" you get their best prices too?). That's good enough for me.
    I have made friends with a retired watchmaker in Holland. Like me, he's a vintage Certina nerd. The best vintage Certina seems to hail from Northern Europe, so having my latest buy sent to him for perusal on its way to me is easy; cheap too! Embarrassingly cheap - I feel like I'm taking advantage, not that I've ever asked anything of him. He's retired and took a shine to me when I bought a watch from him and I think he enjoys our chats. Point being, sometimes the right watchmaker turns up in an unexpected manner - and destination - so if it's right?...roll with it.
    As a novice, could I add a few remarks?:
    - Avoid "project" watches until you graduate from novice status.
    - If it's a vintage chronograph (...and you're still a novice) if it hasn't been serviced, don't buy it. You may be OK most of the time...but that one time you're not? It really hurts.
    This last one is more of a comment than a piece of advice.
    I recently bought a 1964 Certina DS from my Dutch mate. It's not a franken-watch, but neither is it 100% original. The case, the "Turtle-Back" caseback, the crystal and the mov't are all near mint and all left the factory together - as a unit. The dial and hour/minute hands are very clean and also left the factory together, just in a different watch. The orange seconds hand is from a DS-2 (and matches orange highlights on the hour/minute hands) and it uses an after-market crown. However: every seal and gasket has been replaced (that really means something in a DS), the mov't was fully serviced (294 deg Amp / +3 sdp) and it's water (100m) and shock resistance is as good as it was the day it left the factory in '64. It's very pretty, was only $250 and - most importantly - is a vintage watch that I can wear as a "daily" without a care.
    This point being - as long as you know what you're buying - originality isn't always everything. Aesthetics , playfulness and practicality all have a place; we don't need to be so serious all of the time.
    Cheers Max, apologies for the essay - this upload just happens to coincide with where my heads at atm. ; - }

    Always be careful on sites like Chrono24 - I nearly bought a red dial Constellation last year, but the seconds hand had a little arrow on it - not original and the seller only confirmed this when I contacted him and queried it. So, fellow watch fans, be very diligent and check everything! Too many sellers with their frankenwatches are out there!

      Agree, I usually only select real shops that have high reviews. This doesn't mean there are plenty private sellers out there that are trustworthy but beware. The advantage of chrono24 is that you can return the watch if you are not happy with it with your money back. But this is only supported when you return to a dealer.

    I love vintage watches (and modern ones as well) Great video. That soccer watch is fantastic. My personal practice with vintage is to buy things that may not be pristine and i don't necessarily stress if it has the wrong second hand (like on my Seiko 6139). If i can pick up something cool for a few hundred bucks that works, I'm happy.

    Great Video! Yes there are great vintage watches out there and sometimes at a great value. I too love the colors from watches from the 1970's and 80's. I also love many of the movements that were (are) so great. BUT: Don't rush to get that one watch you just found out about. Dig deep!. Like Max says, if it's almost too good to be true, it probably is. So be patient. That watch you pass on today will eventually turn up in the future. I finally got my Tag Heuer Aquagraph after many years. And the prices have actually come down a bit in the last 5 years for this one.

    I commented on this thread on watchcrunch. I'll repeat what I said there. I love vintage but am only interested in modern interpretations of old watches. There's simply too much risk and chance for failure. Plus servicing costs. For example, today I got a Rolex 1928 oyster perpetual homage. It's pretty accurate including the 36 mm case width. And I realized that I really needed a 39 mm. But that's not historically accurate. So I'll keep the watch but look for another interpretation. I think a thoughtfully done re-issue is more my speed. However, I really do love your two vintage watches!!

    eBay is ridiculously addictive - I'm monitoring vintage Zeniths, GPs and GUBs at the moment but there's not much research on them unfortunately.
    I feel that ultimately it's a bit like gambling - even with your due diligence done, you just have to take a chance and as long as you can live with the price (including having to treat as a total loss) or have the discipline to walk away, that's the best anyone can do.

  • @Theo-ul8qm

    Love the video!
    I think it’s important to distinguish buying a vintage watch you actually want to wear from buying a watch for it historical significance. If you just want to wear it and enjoy it, I think some polishing on the case, maybe even a (properly) refinished dial, are perfectly acceptable as long as they are advertised by the seller openly. In this scenario, I wouldn’t worry too much about replacement parts etc. as long as the watch runs well. Also, common movements by valjoux, venus or ETA are a good way to go in terms of serviceability.
    However, if you buy a watch for its historical significance, or it’s a rare watch by a big brand, than you really need to do your homework. One great tip I got on this subject is to make sure you hold at least 2 watches of the model you are looking for in your hand before you buy one. That way you can gauge different case conditions by touch. Very helpful.
    Having said this, I love vintage videos and watches. I’m much more attracted to their designs than to the modern stuff, especially the chronos. Peace!

  • @morganthedruid1
    @morganthedruid1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That Soccer is immense, I love it. If you avoid the big names and probably avoid Lemania movements and go for Valjoux or Landeron you can get some fantastic vintage chronos for a few hundred Dollars, just remember a chrono service may cost more than your watch.

    For my 1967 Speedy, I created a check-list months in advance of what to do, what to check, from DON to hesalyte mark, logo on crown, extract, pictures of the movement, last service, papers, condition, hands, marks, telltale fake signs, price analyses, dealer check on Google, etc. Do I have a Franken ? Yes, and I paid a Frankenprice, knowing which part was an issue, so I didn't pay full price at all. The 1963 watch had suffered a major water damage decades ago, and the movement was therefore replaced with a second-hand spare original 552 movement. The watch looks fabulous, but always know what you buy, especially if the price is low. And for old expensive sports Omegas like the Speedy, only pieces with extract !

    It’s good to buy a watch that has been serviced - preferably by the manufacturer and not a random watchmaker. You otherwise don’t know if they have used original parts and what else they’ve done. Especially with regards to Omega I have noticed that watch makers are charging nearly as much as the manufacturer. Unless you know your watchmaker well, it’s absolutely worth sending it to Omega.
    Otherwise when buying on eBay: good to ask “is it running and keeping the time”. I noticed that this information is often missing. Also: has it been polished, when was it last serviced, how many owners. Then you have all these things in writing. From the seller’s reaction you can also see if something is up.

    Forget trusted sellers...often they don't even know what they're offering. Unless you have deep pockets, take the prospective purchase to a watch maker with intimate knowledge of the make/model. Alternately, pick-up a beaten-up example with a good dial at a discount and spend the $$$$ needed to restore it. Yes, parts can be hard to find and expensive, but in the end, you'll have the confidence in knowing you have a pristine example.
