    Loved to see the girls engaged. I won't be able to get goats in my urban backyard, but if I ever move it will be on my list of demands for my new property and use your fencestretcher, not the truck.

    I am looking at that fence stretcher and thinking WHY did I not think of that?!?!? BRILLIANT!!! Sure beats all the fighting I did making my girls their enclosure! I am planning on fencing in the garden area this year - wanna guess what I am gonna do?!? Thanks so much for the share!

    I really enjoyed this as my wife and I did pretty much the same thing over the weekend. I also own a Farm Boss that I purchased 15 years ago when we acquired the first old house, good saw but get some chaps, you cannot overdo safety. I really liked the way you used the ratchet straps to stretch the fence, sounds like you eventually hooked up to your truck but a good idea just the same. I know you know this but buy a good come along and some chains and a few heavy duty nylon tow straps, I also have a farm jack which can be used in the same manner to pull a chain etc. For what its worth, we always try to buy commercial grade when we have the money so you may want to upgrade from the Ryobi to Milwaukee, not judging but I killed my Ryobi a long time ago and the Milwaukee 18 and 12 volt stuff is still going strong. Thank you for sharing your great story, btw, I know absolutely nothing about goats but wife says they are in our future.........!!!!

    • @Guildbrookfarm
      @Guildbrookfarm  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Joe Nadeau - The Farm Boss is top notch. Chaps are on the list. Using the truck to stretch was just an experiment. It worked a little too well. I almost bought a come along but decided to try the heavy duty ratchet strap i already had and it ended up working well. I have heavy tow straps and chains and all different brands of tools. Many are inherited like the Ryobi stuff. I planned to use them until they die and then replace them with commercial grade, but they just haven't died yet lol. The Milwaukee, Makita, Delta and even most of the DeWalt stuff I have are the best around, I agree.

    • @joenadeau4419
      @joenadeau4419 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like the way you think bro, I would do the same thing, we have also used a number of different posts both wooden and metal and those T posts are really great. We are constantly moving fences around and those can withstand being yanked out and pounded on a number of times. I really enjoy connecting with people that do the same stuff as us, thanks again for sharing your story. J

    "This calls for a B.A.W." I'm thinking "Big A** Wrench" for a cheater bar on the gate hangers. Ha! Good job on the fence! The homemade come a long is brilliant! Go with what you have! I'll tell you another great investment, that you WILL need at some point, is a T Post puller. I move fences around in my garden area as I rotate plots (rabbit exclusion devices!) and those pullers make that job SO much easier. Trucks will win that fence stretching battle every time! Always enjoy watching!

    • @Guildbrookfarm
      @Guildbrookfarm  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha! 😉 You got it! And yeah I know I'll be needing a post puller soon. Putting it off until I do lol.

    • @tommathews3964
      @tommathews3964 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Understand! I have found a couple of other "leverage" uses for it, so it's not completely one dimensional. But, dang does it make pulling those T's easy! I pulled 36 posts on my cattle panel trellises in about 45 minutes. Game changer!

    Awesome video, great job guys! I had a thought about the perimeter of the fence in the woods; you guys have decent sunlight there, far enough away from the fence they might be good spots for fruit tree seedlings, as the trees mature they'll drop fruit into your goat pen to passively feed goats and you can harvest the other sides!

    • @Guildbrookfarm
      @Guildbrookfarm  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is a pretty good idea Josh. Permaculture is something we are trying to incorporate in our plans. However, we don't plan on being on this property long (could be a year, could be 8 years) so I don't want to invest too much in something we may not profit from. But definitely something to consider for the next place

    • @xibipiio991

    can you provide more information on how built your post stretcher

    • @Guildbrookfarm
      @Guildbrookfarm  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Josephine Gallegos - cut an 8' 2x4 in half, clamp it together, drill 4 holes through both pieces with a spade bit big enough for the bolts to slide in freely. Stagger the holes so they aren't on the same grain line of the boards. Use four 4" long 3/8" bolts with 3/4" heads, a fender washer on each side and tighten the nuts with a 3/4" socket, sandwiching the fence between the boards. I used ratchet straps to stretch but most people use a come-along.

    With those pole-drivers, I bet you had your share of blisters. That's no easy task. When I visited my cousin's farm in NE Rhode Island, he had a cool method. He put all of the green metal poles in the bucket of his front loader and then we'd go to each pole location and I'd pull a pole out of the bucket, put it in place and he'd raise the bucket above it and then lower it, using the weight of the bucket to drive it in. Since then, here in Phoenix, without a front loader, I used the same method you did. It's effective but I ended-up with lots of blisters - and that was just from doing a half a dozen. So, kudos to you for driving in so many. Quite a workout! Well done.

    Here am I, in my little kitchen prepping apples from our trees in our garden (UK), and enjoying listening to your video when I thought I heard you mention Spandex for goats! Thinking it must surely have been my imagination I had to wash my hands and rewind the video to actually watch that bit rather than just listen. A very amusing, and slightly bemusing, distraction. Would love to see goats in Spandex! Back to the apple prep for the dehydrator. All best to you and yours in your endeavours. Thoroughly enjoying your videos. Lol great video thought for sure the girls were coming home with chicks ;). I may have miss heard but don't attach a fence to trees it will stretch the fence. We don't have the rock in the ground here so concrete 2" to ground level then soil for run off. Nice improvised stretcher.

    when you are done building the feeder and water stands, you will be building a milking stand, a jungle gym to keep them busy, and a separation stall for birthing. goats come with lots of stuff, but the milk and meat is so worth the work if you are able to keep up. good for you!

    Hi ya Jeremy, Jaime!! Though u weren’t getting the spandex for the goats, it was worth seeing Jeremy’s expression when u asked for them! Once u pointed to the inchworm on ur bandanna, I had to watch it inch along Lol! I can’t believe the snake stayed put with all that vibration going on, who would’ve thought, cutting a snake n half by cutting a log n half. I like ur fence stretcher better, I made one by hammering nails into a 2x4 and bending them, hooking nails to fence, ur way is secure, the nails kept turning on mine, I’m glad I didn’t experience it as a slingshot which just now occurred to me. Ur friend the lizard looked to u n thanks for helping him out of the tub 👍🏼 Thanks for the how to video on the fence and shed installment/preparations!!!

    For post holes (by the hundreds) we had to get a used 53Hp diesel tractor with a strong 3 point hitch and a 12”w x 5’d PTO drill that busts through any type of soil and we use used 10’ railroad ties, timber cut on our mill then used 4” x. 4” sq holed rigid ‘pig wire’ panels that are 24’l x 5’t x 3/16” rigid welded wir panels stapled to posts every 10th and cabled together adding a 20’w hardened steel fence overplayed with a cut down sheet of pig wire. Took $700+/- by watching sales. The tractor is a needed addition to the farm. Good luck, you might consider moveable soft ‘press in by foot’ posts and solar electric fence box with electric ribbon to graze the goats in sections up and down the paddock so they don’t ‘wear out’ their common areas and over manure certain areas. Where that water was so near the surface dig a shallow well with a hand pump for daily watering. We dug a huge one on our back 40 and hit a spring that feeds hundreds gallons of irrigation, animal and surplus run-off to the neighbors=water daily!

      +Tim McKinney - @19:36 I talk about that briefly. It's 12.5 gauge 4"x4" woven wire sheep and goat fence. It's the perfect size for goats.

  • @StRain-zx2vo
    @StRain-zx2vo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's called deadman. You need to fix post otherwise it will fail. You could also do simple H brace or even a cross angle brace but it wont stand any tension without support.

    • @Guildbrookfarm
      @Guildbrookfarm  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is an old video and we’ve since moved and took the fence with us but it worked perfectly when it was there. Only thing I would say is don’t try to stretch a fence with a truck or tractor, it will pull out the post lol. Use a ratchet strap or come-along or even a 4 wheeler and it should stretch plenty tight enough for a goat.

    • @leannegarrioch3010
      @leannegarrioch3010 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good Idea, was it just how the fence pulled or the lay of the land that caused that? We will be putting are fence up in a couple weeks and its gonna be a pain I think, a lot of brush we have to go through. And I must say this video helped.

    • @Guildbrookfarm
      @Guildbrookfarm  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Leanne Garrioch - It was both. There was a big drop from the tree to the gate in a very short span so it just had to be filled in. You can stretch single wires or a strand of barbed wire on the inside of the perimeter or just cheat like I did. 😏

    • @Guildbrookfarm
      @Guildbrookfarm  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I think they're independent franchise locations only in the South. Tractor Supply is really the only other one I know of that is more of a national chain.

    • @candidethirtythree4324
      @candidethirtythree4324 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love Tractor Supply and they have one near each of our places in Louisiana, Arkansas and Colorado. Southern States LOL
      They do have an on-line store though, so I am drooling over a few items now hahaha.
      Which state do you live in?

    • @Guildbrookfarm
      @Guildbrookfarm  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Candide Thirtythree - We're in North Carolina and have 2 Southern States dealers close to us but each location is basically independent and carries whatever they want to besides some of the Southern States branded items like feed. The main website is pretty bad about integrating with what the actual dealer locations carry or have in stock. I almost always end up calling ahead of time to check.

    It's nice to see someone from NC on here. How have the fence corners been holding up? Have they stayed straight with the key boards? Also, how many clips did you put on each t post?

    • @Guildbrookfarm
      @Guildbrookfarm  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Drizzolbud - So far the corner posts haven't budged. So it does seem to work for at least a smaller fence line like this. I think the 2' holes are the key there. If I were stretching much more than 100' lengths I would probably do the H bracing just to be safe. I put 3 clips on each T post.

      Goats don't like rain. It keeps them dry. We may buy a "goat coat" in the fall to keep them warm. This has been proven to increase milk production in colder weather and also to increase butterfat. (no we didn't buy the goat tube though lol)

    If you mix your concrete first and then pour it in the post hole, let it set for at least 36 hours, it should be fine. If you pour it in the hole dry and then ad water, you’re only getting 3 or 4 inches on the top.

    • @frederick6570
      @frederick6570 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes unless you have muscles and small shovel etc to mix it in hole. Way easier to do it in wheelbarrow or something but can be fully mixed in hole just a pain
