Problem with India, Politicians get an Idea, without doing proper research and discussion implement ideas. Then keep doing amendments, and make that idea a nightmare for common people.
Indian politicians are mostly uneducated, you cannot expect them to be from the likes of the first world nations like the United States, Europe or even China
We need a simple 3 rate GST. 0% - i.e. subsdizied/encouraged like solar panels, EVs, 12.5% - on most things. 30% - On things that are actively discouraged - i.e. a "sin tax".
When government changes 18% gst on insurance policy you know how bad the policies are . Forget good roads and good and affordable hospitals when we take insurance and health policies and government has no to take 18 % gst. failed gst policy.
India's real problem is not GST, it is the abnormally low income tax base. GST alone cannot fund all 'dream list' that Indians wish for. We talk about "Tax like Europe, and facilities like Somalia" - but has anyone checked how much income tax those Europeans pay - in addition to indirect taxes? It's funny when people fall for these politicians who will only show half the story. For a country of 140 billion, and who is now 5th largest economy, less than 4% population paying income tax shows how rampant tax evasion is happening in this country. People in this country are dishonest to the core. They want all goodies without paying income tax.
India should seriously hire some real economist from abroad (like from Canada where GST is successfully implemented) and get them simplify its GST. Government babus are NOT capable of framing Tax policies. They will only make everything complicated.
You need to honest and defend gov't by attacking bureaucrats. All these policies are made in PMO and handed to the bureaucrats to implement. People are not silly, you can't obfuscate the fingerprints of PMO and modi ji in these policies.
