Today we are testing the Stihl MS462 with and without the West Coast Saw Bark Box. Watch to see my opinions on it. Please like and subscribe for more Howling Hollow Outdoors!
I have built a lot of two stroke motors. Porting, window's in the piston, gas porting the rings, all have there place. But as an exhaust goes, nothing beats an expansion-chambered exhaust. The back pressure on the exhaust pulse is what makes the power.
@@PekyMF with the bark box and the egan straight shot no, for something a little more wild, yeah you would... these were made for working saws. where you really see the performance gain is in the mid range
Hey HHO ! Catfish here ! Some nice buckin on a beautiful day ! We have a beautiful day in Central New York once a month ! Whether we need it or not ! Nice video !
I have a 038 pro stihl logging saw that I ported and it ran great with my port work and basically a stock muffler with a little mod , but when gordy at west coast saws come out with that bark box I had my saw dyoned it made 7.8 hp with the bark box I was blown away they definitely make great products .👍
New chain cuts those logs like butter and you really know how to let the saw do its job. So impressed with the Bark Box might put one on my electric saw, LOL !!! Stay Safe!
I run the bark box on my 462 and 661. They are totally different saws after installation. You should try the West Coast 3pt felling dogs. They are wicked sharp and keep the saw in the cut.
If you’re gonna have a 462 with a bark box, may as well spring for a full wrap upgrade too. I got the WCS kit for the 362 I just bought, but if I was only able to choose one mod it’d be the full wrap.
I removed my bark box after a few weeks it was far too loud and when felling i had enough of the fumes in my face but the three point felling dogs are fantastic.
I would like to see a dyno run with and without using both mufflers. I raced motorcycles for enough years to realize to get a gain at a certain RPM you usually lose at another RPM unless an engine is just choked off with the exhaust pipe. Not usually the case. Most have the problem with the intake. Porting can be the problem also. Loud may seem faster but it not always faster. Every different saw may react differently to the same modifications.
WCS products are very good quality I’m just not a fan of the bark box. Too loud and I don’t like the way they look on the saw. I prefer to modify the factory muffler, their universal exhaust ports work great. Good flow without being overly loud.
@alanmeyers3957 expansion chambers do not cool the exhaust. It does capture exhaust gas and stuff it back into the exhaust port at a specific time. Right before the piston closes on the compression stroke. Expansion chamber design takes into account the speed of the exhaust pulse and the speed depends on the exhaust gas temperature. The amout of performance gains depends on the shape and placement of expansion chamber in ratio to header and tailpipe/ stinger. You can fabricate an expansion chamber to hit at low speed rpm or hit at higher rpm. You can design it in other ways. You may want an increase in power over a broad rpm range for a fixed gear. or a specific rpm range if you have a sequential gearbox like a motorcycle or car. That way you can pick an appropriate gear to keep the engine rpm in the correct chamber rpm specifications.
I guess you just didn't show turning up your fuel? I thought that was one of the things Gordy was saying you would have to turn up if you added a port to the exhaust. Sounded great though! I could hear the difference in sputter when you rev it up for sure. I was on his site looking at the exhaust port options the other day, but I didn't see the bark box. I need to look and see if they have an option for the 261C on there. I'm wanting to do some upgrades to my Stihl 261C. Mine came with an 18" bar, and I upgraded to the 20" 0.063 gauge with the 3/8" slope. Made a big difference. Thinking about going for the 500i or bigger. I see Gordy running a 36" bar on it, but I didn't see that big of an option on the Official Stihl website. The biggest bar they showed for the 500i was a 25" bar, but seeing Gordy running the 36" bar with a full skip 0.063/3/8" bar and chain, I'm thinking the 500i is a great option for me. Great demo!
stihl say 25 inch because they know that many people wont know what wood they're cutting etc, probably 25 inch max on hardwoods but if you only cut softer woods you could probably go bigger
@@allthingsmotorized1885 I see Gordy on Westcoast Saw use a 32" and 36" on his 500i Stihl, and I've seen him cutting Redwood trees with his. I haven't ever seen him qualify him using bigger than a 25" on his saw. I don't see them offering a bar and chain bigger than 25 until you start seeing 1,500-2,000 dollar chainsaws, but I see a lot of people using 32 and 36 inch bars on the 500i. I guess it's a warranty thing
@@comingtofull-ageinchrist6736 Most saws specs are pretty conservative when it comes to bar size. And at least where I live most chainsaws come with undersized bars. The 400 is 18" or 20", the 462 is 20" or 22", the 500 is 20"-28", and the 661 only goes up to 30" which I think is the most ridiculous one. So yeah, don't worry about what the site or the shop says, look at what the people actually using the saws are doing.
Must wear double hearing protection (form fitted ear plugs and grade 5 muffs) ... they are verrrry noisy ....A great Mod ...have them on my 460, 660,880 running square ground .... For some reason the 460 runs the best ...scary fast.
I love that saw and sound of that bark box. How do you like the 462 overall? I'm thinking of grabbing one but like to hear from owners of them and their opinions. Great video 👍
@@alotl1kevegas860 Not sure what your situation is, but unless you’re consistently cutting BIG wood, a 661 is overkill for an average guy imho. 462/461 is much lighter and more practical. But maybe you’re an arborist or timber faller LOL.
Why spend the money when you can just drill out the existing exhaust hole and make it bigger with the same results . Free of charge. You don’t need twice the hole diameter just a little bigger.
@@Randpage well my saw runs fantastic doing that. Sure if you make the hole to big it wont run very well. 2 strokes are a simple exhaust. Yes there is more but not much. I have worked on 2 strokes for many years. I do agree with you though.
One Big problem out west is we are required to run spark arrester screens in any muffler or pipe on any engine.,so any faller out here can’t use them and be legal. Any employer of a faller, trimmer or bucket gets his permit pulled. So we can’t use them unless you put screen between box and exhaust outlet. Has to be seen to verify. Better off to just mod stock muffler. Not much loss
Hmm interesting to hear Tom, do you know why that is? If you look at 6:40 on video wcs does have a screen over exhaust outlet on bark box I’m not sure if that’s what you are required
Gordy hit the big time with the bark box. Great exhaust, awesome little company.
For sure!
Egan Performance is another one to check out... the straight shot is a lot more rowdy sounding

Correct and do you know why? It has to do with temperature, I’m working on an exhaust cooler, just not enough room in a working saw,
Do u need change other things if u put barkbox, or it could stay normally?
@@PekyMF with the bark box and the egan straight shot no, for something a little more wild, yeah you would... these were made for working saws. where you really see the performance gain is in the mid range
you may have built some engines, but you sure as frick didn't pay attention in grade school
Video of dyno on tube somewhere, figure .6-.7% gain😉
It really helped my 362 wake up. Haven't had any issues with the sound or fumes.

Never heard of the bark box, but i need to look into it. Thanks for sharing.
You won’t regret it. Throttle response is off the chain. Tune your carb to it or you will boil your gas ✌🏻
. 6-10% power gain! Ear plugs a must!

Holly sh*t, really? Out of an 038, they were a popular and good firewood saw but that much power, hard to believe, good for you 👍
How did you get a bark box for the 038? I have an 038 magnum 2 but haven’t seen anything on their site about an exhaust for that old of a saw.

One sensible man here for sure ,who sucked himself of the hype!
I do not think the gain is very much, yes sounds horrible.
Never had any issues with exhaust in the face. Loudness is easy to overcome with proper ear pro too.
Rock the saw more !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Only the sound is worth the hype. I run the bark box on my 461

I have a bark box on my 460 and an exhaust port on my 261 and it's a good modification to make.
Bark box is nice because cheap power bump. The fumes do suck when you have it left side down. Good for cutting in the woods but not for residential.

Sharpen your damn chain put bar oil in it adjust your chain length
