  • Peter Lynch is one of the best investors ever. I give examples for each of the mentioned characteristics a stock to buy should have. Lynch is a contrarian, focused on earnings from companies Wall Street doesn't like or can't sell to the public. Enjoy the discussion and examples.
    1) It sounds dull - or even better, ridiculous
    2) It does something dull
    3) It does something disagreeable
    4) It is a spinoff
    5) The institutions don’t own it, and the analysts don’t follow it
    6) The rumors abound - It’s involved with toxic waste and/or the mafia
    7) There’s something depressing about it
    8) It is a no-growth industry
    9) It’s got a niche
    10) People have to keep buying it
    11) It’s a user of technology
    12) The insiders are buyers
    13) The company is buying back shares

I would add that insiders are net sellers also for basic risk diversification reasons. If one works in the company it is already exposed to that risk ... would be better to allocate capital to other businesses instead of increasing exposure to the business where his / her primary income is generated.

For the past 10 years, Peter Lynch style investing has been a disaster for the investors and hugely underperformed other major quantitative/momentum strategies due to the significant financial market regime shift (which Ray Dalio has been preaching about). on the bright side, hopefully this covid 19 black swan will reshuffle some of the monetary policies and bring back the old school Peter Lynch investment philosophy.

@@Value-Investing I am big fan of Peter Lynch too, see him as one of my role models and would never bet one single dollar against him . Hah. :) It has just been a frustrating 10 years for the fundamental guys like Peter Lynch's disciples.
You know what people say on the Street nowadays -- The 2020 version of "You can't fight the Fed" is that the Stock prices no longer reflect value, profits or other underlying economic fundamentals, but rather are simply a function of the Fed balance sheet (aka, how much helicopter money they can print). I find it painfully true...

    • @scottscriticalmass
      @scottscriticalmass 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Would like to hear Sven's thoughts as well... Personally, I like OTIS because the majority of the revenue is service related, which is recurring. I haven't purchased yet, but will am considering. Carrier looks to be a good business, but revenue isn't as predictable due to less service related business. That makes it less appealing for me. Just my opinion.

No doubt Peter Lynch had a great record as a money manager, but for an ordinary investor, I see a few problems with this approach. How will the investor get many of the information outlined in this strategy? No institutional ownership means no analyst following it. Thus, very little information for the public except the company's quarterly and annual reports. "The rumors abound" -- people in Wall St may have their sources, but where will an ordinary investor hear these rumors? Additionally, it is pretty common for companies that are not followed by analysts to do sketchy stuff as it is much easier to hide than bigger, well-known companies. More importantly, it is very hard to do a proper valuation of the company (using DCF, etc.) without much information or any other comparables.
If you have answers to the above questions, I would certainly like to hear them.
As a matter of fact, I myself have been trying to find a list of companies not followed by analysts (or followed by maybe 1 or 2), but I don't know how or where to look for them. Do you know how I can find such information?
Nice video btw :) Thank you.

in perspective my mortgage rate was 13.5 % in 1983 , risk capital is always higher than fixed rate bonds so you would expect 20% pa in inflationary years, just in dividends, its not rocket science as interest rates go up stock prices go down yeilds go up, as interest rates go down stock prices go up yeilds go down, the compound effect of stock returns ,mainly the retained earnings exponentially effect stocks

my point was interest rates in the uk maxed at 15% in the 1980 s and are now negative in some countries 0 in the uk so as interest rates went from 15% to 5% during lynchs career he had huge yeilds at the start and huge capital growth at the end pretty difficult to fail under those conditions taking the decade 1977 to 87 the crash of 87 may have killed his returns , i m sure he outperformed most of his peers though

I like to see you do a video on what you think of all the bailouts and crazy money printing going on with and what you think that will do to inflation long-term and market returns, I believe you said and I heard it from a few other sources that expected long term market returns with be between 6-7% (if I'm not mistaken) what about inflation?

Hi Sven, in the section where you talk about insider trading, you share a site (www.secform4.com) for information on insider trading which provides really good information a) however, it seems the site is not able to separate CEO transactions from total insider transactions (per your slide, believe you have indicated CEO trading is not be considered; invariably, these are high-volume and skew the data). How do we get that information (instead of doing manually)? b) also, what time period should we be considering? In your video you have looked at past 5 years. However, as you will agree, for different time periods, insider trading might be net positive or net negative; in that case, how do we conclude the impact of insider trading?
