Tip #1: Don't use you own money to buy anything for the class. Tip #2: Ignore the curriculum. Make your own. Tip #3: Your classroom will never be perfect.
I going to be honest, before watching this video my stomach was turning with nerves but you have a way to calm us newbies down. Thank you for making a such an intimidating experience not a nerve wreck. Thanks!
I just wanted you to know that this video is being used in my alternate teaching certification course as a suggested viewing for first year advice. You're the only teacher on TH-cam they use in this way. I just thought it was cool to see a familiar face.
Absolutely get a feel for the curriculum and how to read a Teachers Manual. They don’t teach that in college. Pacing guides as well. Read up on abilities of the average age your teaching. That way you don’t stress them out or yourself by asking them to do something most arent capable of doing. Like for crafts or independent work. And plan out your morning routine for beginning your day.
Absolutely. I just got hired for my first year of teaching, classes start in 2 weeks and while my social studies curriculum is pretty straightforward I am totally lost when going over the English curriculum. I'm going to spend some time over the weekend with a more experienced teacher to try and figure it out
I’m starting my first year 22-23 as a first grade teacher. I did not go to school for teaching but I am on a provisional license. I’m terrified and excited at the same time. I am going to reach out to my mentor as soon as school is out to get the curriculum so I can make lesson plans. I am getting bins and books, and believe communication is so important. I am happy I found your videos
I didn’t major in education either. This year will be my first year teaching. I haven’t been assigned the grade I’ll be teaching yet, but I know it’ll be between k-2. I’m hoping to teach kindergarten.I’m so nervous and excited at the same time.
Also , repeat after me . Consistent Classroom Behavior Management Plan . Take it from me as a former autistic sped school student if you the teacher do not have a plan to consistently manage behavior in the classroom that you can stick with and constantly enforce and act on then you risk winding up doing nothing but screaming at the kids and getting talked back to and shut down or even shut out to where teaching students anything becomes impossible . Also , if you are cornered into doing something with the students or having the students do something that is outside of their thought processes and you get a negative response from the student as long as they are not getting violent or destructive then do not take it personally because they lack that endurance and grit in them and they need help and patience to build that up because they are struggling and when you stick with your student and work with your student(s) through their struggles regardless of how many times they try to push you away they will end up loving you for it in the end when whatever the challenging task or moment is completed . I hope that this helps .
Thank you so much for the advice! I have been teaching thirteen years and still am learning. Here's my advice for newcomers. Always assume you don't know everything and take time to constructively reflect on your progress. Give yourself grace so that you can give your own students grace as well. Relationships with students and parents is the key.
I’m new to your channel and I am a 1st grade teacher ! This is actually my first year as a teacher ever. I have no prior experience what so ever .. I’m super excited, and nervous all at the same time !
I am about to start the 2nd semester of my first year of teaching, and I am teaching first grade. I am feeling less overwhelmed than I was at the start of the school year, but I am still definitely feeling very overwhelmed. Thank you for the tips and for your encouraging words. I can do this!
I’m going into my first year of teaching next year and I’ll be teaching first grade so I’ve been loving watching your videos!! I’ve gotten so many ideas from all your videos and this video was really helpful! Thank you!! ☺️
Comment about curriculum missing some aspects: Find out the curriculum ASAP but then learn how married to it the school is in terms of fidelity: ELA example would be if it is a Readers Workshop model based on Socratic Seminar - how will you get in the Daily 5 type phonics, handwriting and spelling practice activities as curriculum? etc
I'm starting my junior year as an education major and all this was super helpful! All the people in my program seem like they know what grade they want to teach, how they want classrooms to look etc and I feel like I'm just treading water so thank you!

Thank you, I am going to be opening my first classroom at end of July. I'm not new to education as I have been working as support staff for the last 7 years, 5 as a substitute teacher and the last 2 as a special education paraprofessional. My biggest piece of stress, nerves and anxiety is I am going to a completely new school and going from a traditional district based school to a charter school. Also because I won't have that institutional knowledge, from knowing the building I had been in and knowing the staff and being able to quickly reach out to them if needed. I am going to be teaching the same grade I student taught in 4th. I know what I have been doing is going to make things a lot easier and I have experiences to draw on, but yet there is that small amount of fear that - its all on me now I am not that tag team partner to jump in help. One positive is that the math curriculum is the same, but it's a completely different reading curriculum so I am little nervous about using it.
Hello Mrs. Katie, how are you doing? Hello Mrs. Katie, how are you doing? I'm Adauto from Brazil and I'm learning to be an E.L.A teacher, working now for a bilingual school. Tks for sharing all these invaluable tips. And I’d love to ask you a question: is there an online version of the E.L.A. curriculum?
Thank you so much for these tips! I just subscribed! I will be a 3rd year teacher in the Fall and I really relate to what you shared! Thank you for easing my nerves and giving me more confidence as I approach my 3rd year 😊
I'm teaching 1st grade this year, I start Monday. (In 2 days) First time in front of a crowd since I was doing independent study last year (home schooling grading) and the year before we were online. I'm not gonna lie I'm kind of nervous, I've printed a bunch of worksheets for the first day but I'm still nervous lol.
hello Mrs.Katie First of all, I am very sorry if I disturbed you. I work as a primary school teacher in one of the Middle Eastern countries. The company I work for asked me to make a presentation about classroom design. I found your videos while researching on the internet, I watched them and I liked them very much. You can send me a power point or a document about the topics you have explained. Thank you very much for your help and cooperation. Thank you very much.
Calling all K-12 public school teachers in the US! I'm seeking your valuable insights for a teacher interview paper in my EDUC306 course Assessment of Young Children. I have a few questions that could use your expertise: 1. What assessment methods do you utilize to track student progress? 2. Based on your descriptions of assessments, could you identify examples of authentic assessments and more formal/standardized assessments? 3. How do you utilize assessment information gathered from various methods? 4. In what ways are students engaged in the assessment process? 5. How are families involved in assessments? Do you gather information from them, and how is assessment data communicated to families? Your input would greatly enrich my understanding and enhance my research. Thank you in advance for your help!
Thank you for the tips. I just subscribed to your channel. I will be starting my first year at a new school. I am excited and nervous but your video was very helpful. 😊
My question is a as a single, childless woman .. am I able to travel at least 2x in the year with this salary ?? I’m in Utah and want to go in this career but I love traveling and snorkeling so I’m hoping I have enough money to at least travel 2x in a year 🥺 mostly in the summer or holidays I’m thinking?
Does anyone know where we can see some examples of current school curriculum and pacing guides? I keep hearing how important these 2 items are in shaping my teaching career yet can find any to look over and familiarize myself with. It seems like you can only get access to them if your already a hired teacher.
Thank you for this video. I found your channel a number of years ago, and I teach in England. I'm fascinated by all the information that you give, as there are some huge differences between British and American schools, however I have adapted and used some of your approaches with my own students. I just wondered if you wouldn't mind clarifying something for me, as a primary teacher in England we teach every subject on the curriculum to our class, such as English, Maths, Science, Phonics, History, Geography, Music, Religious Education, PHSE, Art and Tech. However I have noticed that in this video you mention about people that already have their job will know which subjects they will be teaching. Do you guys focus on particular subjects, or do you teach every subject on the curriculum? Thank you
Primary teachers teach every subject! Typically around 4th grade elementary schools “departmentalize” their classes meaning one teacher would teach ELA, another Math, about Science/SS and the classes would rotate! It varies by school but in the intermediate grades departmentalizing is more common!
Hey Katie! I've just started watching your videos! I'm teaching first grade next year for the first time and we are using wonders! I was wondering, when or how do you introduce your reading centers? Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated!
I honestly don’t use a lot of the wonders materials for my small groups… I teach the phonics skill of the week in an explicit manner during small group using white boards, sound boxes, decodable texts, etc. that I supplement in with the wonders materials! I introduce my rotation flow the second week of school with super simple independent activities the students can do and I only open two centers at that time, not all four. Then about two weeks later I add the next two centers! I have a whole Vlogmas video from December about how I organize my rotation flow!
Tip #1: Don't use you own money to buy anything for the class.
Tip #2: Ignore the curriculum. Make your own.
Tip #3: Your classroom will never be perfect.
