When I was in the 3rd grade, it was my teacher's first year of teaching. One day she had a panic attack and we were all too young to realize what was happening. She ended up leaving the room for a few minutes while we were doing our bellwork and we all decided to make a get well soon card for her. Well, we tried to make one collectively but she actually ended up with about 6 or 7. When she came back in the room and we gave her all of our cards she immediately looked so much better. I don't think about that a lot but hearing your story reminded me of it.
Who is giving this video a thumbs down??? As a veteran teacher (22 yrs), I can say your advice and insight are ON POINT! If you're a new teacher, I hope you watch & take notes. Great work Michelle.
Hey Michelle can you please do a video on the first day of school? Like what to do how to introduce yourself to students and build a good relationship. I'm in school to be an elementary teacher and I won't graduate for a few years but the first day is already making me nervous lol
Same here! I’ve got a few more years of school left and I know this is what I’m meant to do with my life but I still have crazy anxiety about my first year
I let my kids pick their own desk and write their name on the name tag... i do it so when "meet the teacher" night is over i know exactly who can't sit together and I rearrange them. I have them write their name to see how their penmanship is. This tag ends up being the name tag that is used for their mailbox (i don't give numbers) or their place in the closet.
Ahh! I'm 20 now, and just about to enter my junior year. I cannot imagine having my own classroom at this age!! Thank you so much for making this video and sharing your experiences. Your videos are so inspiring and you make me very excited to have a classroom of my own in two years :)
I'm starting my first year of teaching next month. I'm so excited but also beginning to get really nervous!! I'll be teaching 5th grade at a title 1 school in Virginia. Thanks for the video!💕
Bianca Thank you!! I started an Instagram to document everything and for a support system (thanks pocketful of primary!) it's @5thgradefeels if you're interested! :)
"I didn't even know what to ask for help with" YES! I just finished my first year teaching (3rd grade title one) and I cannot BELIEVE how much I can relate to this video. My bawling breakdown occurred during a staff meeting mid-year. I am nodding at EVERYTHING you have said. This summer has been a lifesaver...I feel refreshed and ready to give it all another try (I am in the same school but moved to second grade). I appreciate your honesty and humor.
To help prevent getting sick take Airborne gummies! I took them every single day my first year and did not get sick! I had a sore throat at the beginning of the year but the rest of the year was smooth sailing!
You may never read this but f you do then I hope you like my little message to you😃 I'm in year 9 in High School in the U.K. and I aspire to be a primary school teacher here in England. I started watching your TH-cam channel a few months ago and in those few months, I have grown to really love your channel♥️ Your attitude and attention to detail in your classroom is outstanding in my opinion. I would love to have the same attitude that you do in all aspects of my life. Yes, you have bad days and sometimes your kids knock you down which you show in your videos but your positive attitude you show to your audience is truly admirable!✨ You are my role model for the future and I hope you can carry on your videos to set a fantastic example to people like me! Not only are you inspiring your kids in the classroom but your inspiring people like me too😊 Thank you for making your videos and putting so much effort into your videos, classroom, TpT and everything else that we get too see. Don't ever feel like your not doing enough or r not meeting expectations, you are even if you don't realise👍 Have a great year in your new school and I hope that you can continue making your videos, once again, Thank You♥️🙏🏼
I'm starting my first year of teaching this August and this video makes me nervous and gives me confidence at the same time. And even though, the education system in my country is different, I still can take these tips and use them as a teacher. I hope I can survive my first year.
Fabulous video! I am beginning my sixth year of teaching and hearing your memories made me think back to my very first day in the classroom! I also appreciated the advice for first year teachers at the end. What an amazing inspiration you are for teachers!
Thank you for this video!!! I just graduated and am looking for my first teaching job, but I have so many worries about my classroom and lessons and this video really helped me recognize what's important and what's not important for my first year. Thank you so much ❤️❤️
Kendall Collins I don't know if things are different in different countries but I do know classroom management aka rapport building and routines/systems make or break the year. My first day was all routine and team building my first week was that plus figuring out their interests and strengths/weaknesses. Everything else falls into place after that.
I'm starting my first year next month. I'll be teaching 3rd grade at a title 1 school. Thank you so much for all of your advice and sharing your experiences!
Thank you so much for this video! It's like you spoke to my soul and answered all of my questions and concerns without me even having to ask! I am hopefully going to be a first year teacher this year. I am waiting to hear back but knowing that you also didn't get hired until the end of July sets me at ease a little! Thank you so much! You are such an awesome and inspiring teacher and mentor!
So this just happened... I just took 3 days and binged watched your entire channel 😳. You are amazing and I can't wait to get into the classroom. I will be student teaching the fall of 2018 and I can not wait!! It has been such a long time coming since I had to take a break with school when I had my 3 boys and after I went back to school my oldest was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. So to say it has been a roller coaster would be an understatement! Still I can't wait to take everything I have learned in school and my personal life and watch my students grow!
Training Lily: An Autism Service Dog good for you for returning to school! I am studying special education too and have learned so much about how to help children with different needs. Good luck!
I love this video, thank you for doing it! Especially you saying to NOT look on social media and compare yourself to veteran teachers because honestly, that's what I am thinking about. I'm thinking about how my classroom will look compared to those I've seen. So thank you for this great video!!
Thank you so much for this video. I start my first teaching job as a high school bio teacher in a week and I am so nervous/excited. You addressed many of my concerns and it's so great to hear it from someone who made it through. You are inspiring.
Not only do we have to change bulletin boards every month, but those are in the hallway. So, they absolutely MUST be changed and beautiful and they tell us what the theme is and we have to make sure we are using the Thinking Map and Book of the Month ideas as well. Ug....but, when teachers are pushed.....they end up overshooting the mark and doing amazing work!
Estela Tupper I'm a preschool teacher and we have 5 curriculum boards in the classroom and have to change them at least biweekly, preferably weekly. We also have to write an evidence of learning sheet.
Was I supposed. to cry watching this..I cried 3 times..im such a cry baby. I will be student teaching this fall, and I enjoyed your quick but detailed summary.
I'm starting my first year teaching in New York this year. And I'm so excited but nervous! I'm sooo glad I found your channel! Can't wait to see your other videos :)
Your videos are so inspiring. I'm binging your channel in the summer before I start my teacher education program at my college and I'm more and more excited to get into my classroom observations and eventually have my own. Your channel is my new favorite and I couldn't be happier I found it. This video was so helpful and I'll keep all this advise in mind during my first year.
Thank you so much for making this video. You are my literal inspiration, and to hear you admit that you had a rough first year makes me feel so much better about mine. I felt like a failure and cried so much, and to hear that you had the same struggles gives me hope that I can someday be the teacher you are.
I'm in grade 7 this year and we have 2 new teachers teaching us and this is their first years of teaching but it's easier for them because they have been teaching us for about 5 years so it's really easy for them!
Beautiful video. I'm only in high school, but I am in a teacher cadet program and we are currently in our internship phase with one of the elementary schools of our choice. I've only been in the classroom for a week and I can already say I'm going to love teaching! I'm in a second-grade class and sometimes the kids will make you smile while other times they will tell you sad stories but overall you feel joy knowing that you had a hand in shaping those kids for their future even if they don't know what they will be yet. Love your channel and have a lovely day!
I'm about two months into my first year of teaching and this video is so reassuring! I know what I am going through is normal, but it's still help to hear that all these things are part of the process. Teaching definitely has to be one of the best jobs!
I know one thing my second grade teacher did was put "notes to self" on the board either when she was proud or upset. At the end of the day if you had a positive note you moved your clip up and if you had a bad note you moved your clip down. I know all of my friends and I loved it. Also at Christmas we in the morning made gingerbread cookies and we went in a hunt. I'm going into high school and I still remember these things.
Words cannot express how happy I am that I found this video! I am a first year teacher and it has definitely been a challenging year so far. Thanks so much for all your advice and perspective!
I'm starting my first year in 1st grade on August 28th. I student taught 5th grade, so I am very nervous! Thank you for your suggestions and encouragement. You are one of my biggest role models right now. I have been binge watching your channel since I found you a few weeks ago. Keep doing what you're doing, girly!
Michelle, I wish there was a love button on here. You are absolutely my favorite teacher youtuber! You are so real and honest about your experiences. I really appreciate that! I'm two semesters away from student teaching and your videos always give me a real look into what teaching is really like. Plus a lot of great advice. I loved this video! Makes me feel that if a great teacher like you went through these things, then I will be okay! Thanks!
So first year teaching was during covid and I didn’t get sick once. Super surprising since I stayed sick when I was in school. All the precautions against the virus made all sorts of illnesses less likely.
When I worked at an early childhood center we had weekly themes, so bulletin boards were changed weekly 😳 6 years of practice I can honestly say I am a pro now! 😊
Hi Michelle! I wanted to write to you to say thank you for making this video. I am currently student teaching and looking for a job for next year which is such a crazy process. Hearing your experience as a first year teacher is so helpful and has allowed me to take a deep breath and know that I can do it too! Also I am such a huge fan of all your organization tips and tricks and can not wait for more videos.
Thank you for all of your videos! I'm going to college to become an elementary teacher after working from home in healthcare for the last 18 years. I know teaching is my life purpose, but I'm nervous. I appreciate your channel. 🙂
Hi Michelle! Thank you for creating such positive videos that any grade-level teacher can use and thank you for making them meaningful and interesting. I think that you are an incedible human being and I wish your videos were around when I began to teach! Thank you for doing it with a smile!
This is SO helpful! I’m completing a Transition to Teaching program and student teaching now. I don’t have the challenge of being so young like you described when you first started, but I definitely have the frustration and insecurities over stepping out of a former career life I’d gotten pretty good at and into this new career life that I feel awkward, out of control and overwhelmed by. Always felt teaching is what I SHOULD’VE originally pursued in undergrad and extremely grateful that I’m in a position to finally pursue it (decades later - yikes!). So much harder than teachers make it look, though!! Your channel is a huge help- I’m learning a lot - thank you!
It's crazy watching these kinds of videos because it makes me realize just how close I am! I graduate in May, with a degree in Special Education. Can't wait! Thanks for the video!
I LOVED THIS. Thank you. It's EXACTLY what I needed to hear!! I start with 27 four year olds next week and your advice has really helped settle my anxiety and stop trying to aim for perfection! Ty 😁
I can't wait for the "1st year teacher recommendations" video!!! I'll be a first year teacher next school year and I'm already buying items but I have no clue what all I need. I'm on a paraprofessional salary, so buying things when I can, works best for me.
Hi Kayla! The video with recommendations of what to buy your first year of teaching will be live on my channel in the morning at 7:00 am EST! I hope you enjoy it and I hope it helps you prepare!
Lol! Yes.....it's hard not to laugh when a student farts. One time I was teaching a lesson and one of my students let it rip....the class laughed and I told them to settle down. Next, the student who farted says innocently "My bum burped". I lost it. Couldn't contain my laughter. Great video Michelle. I'll share my first year story very soon down at my channel too.
Funny thing is I actually thought I had it together my first year teaching..... 12 years later I see that wasn't the case at all!! 😂 It's amazing how much you progress as a teacher with each year of experience. My first class of students definitely holds a special place in my heart!
Hahahaaaa 😂, I'm LOVING your funny stories! I learned the hard way to not give certain directions because kids are so literal... I told a student to go grab another student for me. I look up and that student is literally grabbing the other student with her hands. When I asked why she was doing that, she replied; "Because you told me to." Lol!!!
Thank you so much for this video. I am currently studying to get my post degree teachers cert. after working as an Engineer for 11 years and I often have moments where I wonder if I'm making the right move. Your video was so sincere and expressed feelings I so deeply crave for myself in my profession. I believe teaching is truly a calling and I hope to answer this call with as much sincerity and care as you have expressed in this video. God Bless you as you continue to follow your passion :)
Watching this video after my first year of teaching..and oh man the number of times I've laughed out loud at your stories because they are so relatable! What a crazy first year we all have had. Experiencing my first year with COVID and all, it's hard because I feel like I missed out on some things, but I'm curious to see how next year will be after all of this.
I just found your videos and am already hooked! I will be starting my first year as an elementary (1-5) special education teacher in 3 weeks and couldn't be more excited/nervous! When I saw that you had made a video about your first year, I knew I had to automatically click and watch. :)
This is amazing !!! Thanks for the video, so helpful!. I start my second year of student teaching in September and then have 1 more year before I can start fully teaching in a school. So excited!
You are a lifesaveeer thank you so much for posting your videos. I just started my very first semester as a teacher. I'm having like anxiety attacks everyday lol
A good tip is not to rush the beginning of the year set up of routines and rules and procedures. It pays off in a big way if you take about 4 weeks maybe 6 to set up rules, rituals, routines, and procedures. That takes you to about October, but by then your classroom will be running like clockwork. Take it slow and systematic and build relationships with your students!
I have 5 curriculum displays I have to change weekly, biweekly at the least. Plus I have to write evidence of learning sheets that indicates the standard, materials and outcomes. It's so stressful.
I LOVE you!! You are so encouraging and positive while still being real about what you face as a teacher. I will be a first year teacher this upcoming August and this video is so helpful! I will definitely be watching more for your great ideas!!!
OMG I DIED at "Ma'am please stay calm." xD I'm a music teacher. I'm technically in my second year of teaching, but I just got done co-teaching for a year in South Korea at an international school. This year, I'm moving to China more permanently and FINALLY going to be teaching my own classes 7-12th grade music/choir so this year feels much more like my first year. I loved this video, because I remember being brand new last year and being so nervous, and I had another person. I feel like I'll be even more nervous this year, but I'm still excited. Even though we are completely opposite spectrums of the teaching world (I'm middle and high school music in CHINA with all ELA students) but this video was so helpful!
Michelle you're such an inspiration! I've recently stumbled upon your channel and been hooked catching up on all your videos. Must I say, although I may not be in the educational career your videos have helped me appreciate all that teachers do! Your videos inspire me to stay positive in all situations. Thank you! 💕
This was my first year and I can totally related. However, I am such a control freak I looked into so many of those things before the first day of class. Add to it this whole shut down and my first year has been overwhelming.
Since I found your channel, I have not stopped watching! We're both Maryland teachers, I do high school, but I love all of your organization and dunkin obsession. cant wait to keep watching, hopefully we can meet sometime in the future!
Wow thank you thank you! This was the perfect video to watch. I just graduated with my masters in teaching and I will be teaching 1st grade this fall in NY. Sooo excited/terrified!!!
My first year of teaching i ended up quiting after two weeks. Watching your videos makes me want to try again but i cant get over how I felt the first time.
I've been wanting to try online teaching for awhile now just no open positions. I agree i also think I just have to find the right fit, that and I also think maybe i'm just too young to really want to put in all the time that is needed to be an amazing teacher. Maybe when I'm a little older with children Ill go back into the classroom. Thank you for your reply and making me feel not so alone!
BLANSTAR21 I was too overwhelmed with no help. The day I quit the new teacher came in at the end of the day and was given a ton of help. After seeing that I was glad I left that school since they didn't seem to care to help me.
This video is super helpful! I am starting my first year teaching next month! We actually go back August 1st, but the kids don't come until August 28th. Yay!! Thank you!!
I'm looking forward to a video showing what to spend money on your first year of teaching. I have about $550 saved for my first classroom (so far) and I know most of that needs to go toward books and supplies.
I'm about to finish credential program and you replied to my question about the most important things to keep in mind during my first year cuz I am really nervous. This new video is so perfect for me to hear. Your videos actually help👍. So far in my student teaching I have struggled with discipline. Was that an issue for you? Any advise for my soon to be first year. Elliot
Okay, had to comment one more time. This had to be the best first year teacher advice video I've seen so far. I start school on Aug. 22 but I will definitely be referring back to this the Sunday before :)
hi! i'm a college student, about to enter my sophomore year and declare my education major! your videos have helped me a lot in deciding that I do want to teach, and what to expect, so thank you so much!
I'm experiencing my first year of teaching since february (here in Brazil, that's when we start). But it's so funny! Although I have already been through five months of teaching, after staying one month away (vacations...) I'm super nervous all over again!! I don't know how it works there in the U.S, but here in Brazil, in private schools there's always the teacher and at least one assistant. I was a T.A for four years before graduating and getting my own classroom, but still, even though I was already used to work with kids, classroom management, the curriculum and all of that, it feels so different when you are actually THE teacher (head teacher). So many responsabilities I didn't have before, and this huge desire of being the greatest teacher I could possibly be! We are SO full of ourserlves aren't we? x) I know I have a LOT to learn, and I'm trying my best... Your videos are helping me A LOT! I can't thank you enough!
Thanks so much for sharing your experience! I loved hearing about your first year. I totally agree about content being more important than having a cute classroom. It's nice to have both but that comes with time. :-)
When I was in the 3rd grade, it was my teacher's first year of teaching. One day she had a panic attack and we were all too young to realize what was happening. I’m a first year teacher (second grade) and this was so comforting! Seriously it’s so overwhelming 😰
Can you make a video of what a teacher needs to do to get ready for the school year? A checklist kind of thing?
Ahh! I'm 20 now, and just about to enter my junior year. I cannot imagine having my own classroom at this age!! Thank you so much for making this video and sharing your experiences. Your videos are so inspiring and you make me very excited to have a classroom of my own in two years :)

Stacey Taylor, I agree totally!!

Thanks!
I wish you were on youtube when I started teaching. You are definitely a true resource to teachers:)
Studying for my alternative teacher cert. in Texas. Your vids are inspiring and keep me motivated. Thanks!
I got so excited when I saw this video! Loved it!
Ty 😁
Thank you for being transparent with your first year! I am a first year teacher in a Title 1 school in Des Moines. This video provides some relief!
Pocketful of Primary AWESOME!!! Thank you sooo much! 😊
It's amazing how much you progress as a teacher with each year of experience. My first class of students definitely holds a special place in my heart!
I am starting school in August for Elementary Education, and your videos make me feel so much better about what i'm getting into.
Thank you for this video!!! I just took a Kindergarten job and am so excited! More first year tips videos would be great!
Im so amazed at your spirit. You are in the right career path. I hope to be just like you soon
I can totally relate to so much from this video! This will be my 8th year teaching and I love it!
This is by far one of the most helpful and encouraging videos I've seen in you channel. Thank you for the tips and words of wisdom.
I have 5 curriculum displays I have to change weekly, biweekly at the least. Plus I have to write evidence of learning sheets that indicates the standard, materials and outcomes. It's so stressful.
Ahhh I'm starting my first year of teaching next month. I'm so excited but also nervous! Thanks for the video
I LOVE you!! You are so encouraging and positive while still being real about what you face as a teacher. I will be a first year teacher this upcoming August and this video is so helpful! I will definitely be watching more for your great ideas!!!
OMG I DIED at "Ma'am please stay calm." xD
I'm a music teacher.
You don't know how helpful this video is to me! Thanks Michelle!!
I looove your videos so much!! Could you do a video on basics that a first year teacher needs?
Michelle you're such an inspiration! I've recently stumbled upon your channel and been hooked catching up on all your videos. Must I say, although I may not be in the educational career your videos have helped me appreciate all that teachers do! Your videos inspire me to stay positive in all situations. Thank you! 💕
I'm a new teacher, and can't thank you enough for all these videos. I've been watching all afternoon, haha. Such an inspiration!
Going into my third year of teaching and this is almost EXACTLY how I felt my first year!! Love the advice at the end.
SUCH a great video! I can relate to so much you said! Thanks for sharing Michelle!
Each passing year, I learn so much more. It is then that I realize that, even in year 4, you do not know everything... and that is okay!
Thank you for your reply and making me feel not so alone!
couuurtneeey Really? Why..? I absolutely love teaching.
BLANSTAR21 I was too overwhelmed with no help. The day I quit the new teacher came in at the end of the day and was given a ton of help. After seeing that I was glad I left that school since they didn't seem to care to help me.
I really want to teach 1st 2nd 3rd or 4th grade students#favorite teacher ever
Elliot
Just about to start my first year in 7 days, secondary teaching though. This made me feel more at ease, thank you.
LOL you are cracking me up! Thank you for being yourself. This was refreshing.
Michelle, I am so grateful for this video! Thank you!
Awww--the student bringing a tail for Luna is super cute!
I'm a second year teacher and I wish I had this video last year. I agreed with pretty much everything you said!
Thank you SO much for sharing this! I start my first year next month and this video was so beneficial!!
Okay, had to comment one more time. This had to be the best first year teacher advice video I've seen so far. I start school on Aug. 22 but I will definitely be referring back to this the Sunday before :)
This video is absolutely everything i felt this year! Thank you for creating this!
Thank you! I am starting my first year of teaching. I'm so nervous. I appreciate this video!
hi! i'm a college student, about to enter my sophomore year and declare my education major! your videos have helped me a lot in deciding that I do want to teach, and what to expect, so thank you so much!
Yes please make a video on best things to buy for your first year!!
Great video! Thanks for putting out such great content!
We are SO full of ourserlves aren't we? x)
I know I have a LOT to learn, and I'm trying my best... Your videos are helping me A LOT! I can't thank you enough!
Thanks so much for sharing your experience! I loved hearing about your first year. I totally agree about content being more important than having a cute classroom. It's nice to have both but that comes with time. :-)
Your videos make me even more excited to be a teacher in two years!! :D
Thank you! I'll be a first year teacher this upcoming school year!
Michelle, Thanks for sharing your honest story. You are truly inspiring! #pocketfulofpositivity ❤️
