I have been watching your video's for several weeks since i purchased my HMMWV. You have no idea how helpful they have been to me and I'm sure for others. Keep up the great work!!!
Great video! Just a word of caution - those rims are not flanged. So the runflat was what enabled the bead lock to the rim (it's a double-bead-lock.) Without it (or a beadlock insert which is the best alternative) there is nothing but air pressure keeping that tire bead set. If your air pressure drops (a hole in the tire, or you aired it down for traction in snow/mud/sand) and it goes below 20 PSI that tire is going to come right off the rim while you are driving. If you're only using it on the street and are constantly keeping the PSI at road travel range you are mostly fine. But any hole that you don't notice could result in losing the tire off the rim.
When I was in the Marines (1993-2001) I remember breaking down a bunch of those wheels however they had 2 piece aluminum run flats inside. One thing to remember is that the beadlock is now gone. Not sure if that bothers you. I like your methods. We had to use nothing but hand tools to break them down. It was a workout. I like the nature sounds in your videos. Keep them coming....
Those are the newer one piece run flats. The older style was a 2 piece aluminum ring that bolted together. The mechanics in the military also taped on some grease packets to the run flats so when the tire did go flat the grease packets popped. It keeps the tire from getting ruined by the run flat ring.
Easy way to remove the tyres !! I’ll explain my wife I need a second humvee to do this 🤣🤣🤣 or even a third one to remove the run flat !! And removing the valve stem allows to have a better air flow getting inside the tyre.
I had a blowout on my Humvee at highway speed. Was not fun getting it safely stopped. And I was lucky it did not cause an accident. Looked up the tire codes. All of the tires were close to 17 years old. I bought 6 new Wrangler MT military tires and had them all mounted and balanced by an AM General trained tech (two spares). The tech. also explained that the run flats also serve to prevent a roll over should you have a blow out at higher speeds. He highly recommended against removing the run flats for safety reasons. Despite the design these things are still top heavy. Just be careful if you are cruisin around at highway speeds! When mounting the tires the Tech. also changed out the split rim O-rings and installed the AM General run flat lube in each install. The run flat lube keeps things from over heating should you have to drive on the flat. And the split rim seals should be changed with every tire change. They will also help to prevent flats. Just my two cents! I lucked out and found a brand new AM General run flat tool on Ebay. Got it for $80. AMG sells them for $1800! Another little Hummer tire trick, if you mount the little tread arrows forward on one side, and backwards on the other side, anyone tracking you will not be able to tell which direction you were going. :)
"Another little Hummer tire trick, if you mount the little tread arrows forward on one side, and backwards on the other side, anyone tracking you will not be able to tell which direction you were going." aren't those arrows meant to indicate the direction of rotation, so if you put them on backwards wouldn't that mean increased wear and tear and possibly less traction on the road?
He was right though they flip with the run flat doing highway speed. Can’t imagine how bad they would roll without . Hundreds of pics online with military hummers flipped during transport on highways. . The tires were mostly the issue they blow sidewalls when cracked from sitting not being rotated. Mine are all cracked i need to upgrade.
Next time break both beads first then disassemble the wheel. This will prevent you from needing the block of wood and also risking damaging the threads in any way.
I remember another video ages back showing how to remove the runflats, I think they did it with a jeep, a tree and cargo straps/bungee cord/something tied around the run flat. Tyre was tied to the tree and jeep would drive off and take the runflat with it
5859 Wheels are always dirty inside. I build these for a living and the 2138/8620 wheels are for some reason much cleaner on the inside then 5959's. Also, you think those rubber run flats feel unbalanced you should try dealing with 3 piece run flats, Much worse.
You can also use an engine hoist. I just did a Humvee tire swap vid on my channel. It is an alternative if you don’t have two trucks or away to do the pull and yank method.
Always wondered you changed a tire on a hummer. Great vid man! What size of tires do hum v's typically run? Im doing an Overlander project and was thinking about run flats, but i didnt know they made the ride so rough.
Mike Allsopp one of the main things is check all four geared hubs for oil. If they sit too long the seals degrade and they’ll leak. If you run them without oil you’ll have big problems. I grenaded a geared hub once. Also If you can find one with a 4 speed trans you’re doing great. The 3 speed is fine it’s just annoying if you want to drive faster than 55.
Mike Allsopp oh and buy a grounding harness as the hmmwv is aluminum. The harness will ground electrical components so you don’t have strange gremlins.
I’ll be making a video soon on what to look for and good places to find them for sale. My favorite place to look right now is on some of the Facebook Humvee groups.
I’m thinking about using Humvee tires for a off road vehicle I have. How much do the tires and wheels weigh together once the run flats are taken out? Right now I am at 130lb with 34s but I have a lot more gear left to use
I purchased my slant back a few years ago for my dad to drive. He’s in his 70s now and cant get around like he used to. I’m planning on selling it. Do you know of a place that specializes in selling military vehicles? It’s in great shape, supplemental armor, and was one of the first ones released (on road title) so it should sell easy. Your run flat removal is the same as mine only I tie mine to a tree and the runflat to the hmmwv and get the same result. On filling the tire I’ve seen guys use ratchet straps to crank the tire down. When they add air it seats the bead and they remove the strap
Hey buddy! I’d go join some of the Humvee groups on Facebook and list it on there. Just type in Humvee in the Facebook search and a few HUMVEE groups will pop up.
edbo10 thought about that but I’m so unskilled at such things that I wouldn’t put the correct title in or keyword and no one would see it or I’d get the math wrong and eBay would take most of the money or something. I guess I’m too old school. What ever happened to the “cars for sale” section of the newspaper...and further, what ever happened to newspapers?

You are correct. The runflat serves as a beadlock. Without it, if his tires drop below 20PSI they will come right off that rim while he is driving. He also cannot air down them when off-road for the same reason. A beadlock is now needed as these rims are not flanged.
You removed the valve "core" from the stem. not the stem itself. And as Patrick B wrote: It is to maximize the flow of air into the tire at the moment of expansion/explosion.
Highly recommend not running a humvee 2 piece wheel without some sort of beadlock... Tire can unseat from having to low of psi or if you have a blowout at speed you can have a real problem on your hands. Also the annoying fact if you lose air in a tire overnight and it goes flat, it will just unseat itself. I just rebuilt a set of (5) 24 bolt wheels and put pvc inserts from trailworthy fab. Best upgrade you can do
You can get all replacement parts and more from trailworthy fab. Including the insert to keep the rims a double beedlock without runflat. Check them out.
I’m still active duty, we use a strap to squeeze the run flat until it looks like a number “8”. Then you put grease all around the inside of the tire and the run flat. Put the run flat inside the tire and remove the strap.
Can someone please explain how the run-flat connects to the rim, because it doesn't seem like it is bolted onto the rim, it seems like it just kind of is around it.
The two piece rim clamps it in place and seves as an internal bead lock on the tire. Otherwise the run flat would just spin inside the tire if it went flat
Fun fact, those wheels require a inner lock ring to hold the tire to the wheel properly. Yes they may stay on without it but if you ever have and issue out of it and it causes an accident your insurance won't cover it because you chose to no use the required equipment.
To lock the rubber shell to the rim, if you run in off road conditions you run low pressure to gain more tread spacing, tire gets wider and drives better on sand and dirt. With no pressure if you hit the gas too fast the rims spin inside the rubber tire and rip it off eventually.. Split rims for off road performance, keep rubber squished on rims any time
The wheels are 2 piece wheels. There’s also 3pc racing wheels. The humvee scone with those run flats in case the truck tire gets shot in a confrontation. Soldiers can still make it out.
Richard J. Hoar I know many people who run these without run flats, I have been for a few years now. I’m not planning on running these at low pressure.
@@DakotaWoodHD I agree they're overkill if you're not planning to run and gun. I did think it was a clever way to sell Hummers by using more of them for maintenance tasks. Why own just one when you can have a whole fleet! Love the channel and your rigs - hope to have something similar one day!
I’ve heard these things were a nightmare for troops in Iraq. One Humvee would get a flat, and the entire convoy would have to stop and set up a perimeter while they split the rim apart, pulled the run flat out of the old tire, pushed it into the new tire, and reinstalled that wheel, while getting shot at and possibly losing a few vehicles to RPG fire.

So the thing with the Valve is that you should remove it to prevent damage but most importantly to get more air in quicker!

Gasket is necessary? My humvee rims and my unknow wheels like humbee wheel are not having a gasket.
How much does that solid rubber insert weigh?
Isn't that the internal part of the bead locks though? So now your bead locks are just overly complicated steel rim...
You are correct. The runflat serves as a beadlock. Without it, if his tires drop below 20PSI they will come right off that rim while he is driving. He also cannot air down them when off-road for the same reason. A beadlock is now needed as these rims are not flanged.

No bead lock? What stops the tire from slipping on the rim? What kind of tires are you using?
It's like every other tire, the air pressure presses the bead to the rim. Thats why you can't drive with super low air pressure on Original HMMWV rims
You could install a PVC ring so the double bead lock still works.
Angry Iron thinking about that..
It's an internal bead lock, the run flat presses against the bead when you put the 2 piece rim together
